TASK 4: PERSONAL AND SOCIAL WELLBEING
PERSONAL DIGNITY IN VARIOUS SOUTH AFRICAN RELIGIONS

TIME: 1 WEEK TOTAL: 30

INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION

1. For this task you will be required to do extensive research on Buddhism.


2. Write an essay on A4 folio paper of about 250 words about Buddhism.
Alternatively, learners may write an essay about any other religion practised in
South Africa, but then the parent/facilitator must suggest alternative aspects for
the learner to focus on in his/her essay (with reference to the bullet points at
number 3 in the instructions below).
3. You need to include the following information in your essay:
• Historical background – where and when did Buddhism originate?
• The four noble truths of Buddhism
• The eightfold path to Nirvana
• Common Buddhist beliefs/perspectives
• Symbols of Buddhism
• Who is the Dalai Lama?
• The practice of Buddhism in South Africa
4. Remember that you need to rewrite all applicable research information in your own
words in your essay. It is wrong to copy someone else’s work directly from
sources, it is called ‘plagiarism.’
5. Your cover page must be creative and include the following information:
Your name and surname, grade, student number, task number and task title.
6. Write with a blue ballpoint pen only.
7. Remember that there are no sub-headings in an essay.
8. Write neatly and legibly.
9. The attached rubric will be used to assess your essay.
