1825: Charles Krug is born in Trendelburg, Germany

1860: Charles Krug marries Carolina Bale of Napa Valley. Her dowry includes 540 acres of Napa Valley land

1861: Charles Krug establishes his eponymous winery in the Napa Valley. He plants his first vineyard and
again uses a cider press to crush grapes

1870s: Charles Krug produces some of California’s first varietal-labeled wines

1875: Charles Krug founds the St. Helena Viticultural Association

1872: Charles Krug builds the Redwood Cellar – 1874 expands on the cellar after a fire

1880: Charles Krug expands the winery, now the grandest in Napa Valley, to a capacity of 700,000 gallons

1881: The two-story stone Carriage House and stable are built

1882: Charles Krug builds the first public tasting and sales room in California

1892: Charles Krug dies on November 1 at the age of 67

1894: James Moffitt family assumes ownership of the property

1906: Cesare Mondavi, future owner of Charles Krug Winery, emigrates from Italy to the United States

1908: Cesare Mondavi returns to Italy to marry Rosa Grassi in Sassoferrato, Italy and returns to the United
States in December the same year

1918: With Prohibition on the horizon, Cesare leaves the saloon business, becomes a grocer and begins
his annual autumn trek to California, where he purchases wine grapes for his Italian customers

1922: Cesare Mondavi moves his family to Lodi, California and begins a fruit shipping business – C.

1938: Peter Mondavi Sr. graduates from Stanford; while at Stanford, he conducted studies at Berkeley on
cutting-edge experiments with cold fermentation

1942: Peter Mondavi is called to serve his country, serving in Europe until 1946

1943: Cesare and Rosa Mondavi purchase the Charles Krug Winery for their sons, Robert and Peter from
James Moffitt for $75,000

1943: The 137-acre Krug Ranch and the Charles Krug brand is now under the stewardship of the Mondavi
family; the old winery is renovated and the first cold-fermentation room in California is added and
replanting of the vineyard begins

1944: The first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon is produced

1947: Brothers Robert and Peter Mondavi are among the founding members of the Napa Valley Technical
Group, formed to share knowledge and information with vintner members

1949: At Charles Krug Winery, the Mondavi Family produces California's first consumer newsletter,
Bottles & Bins

1951: The Mondavi Family introduces Tastings on the Lawn, an annual end of summer event with wine,
food and music on the Great Lawn adjacent to the Carriage House

1954: Life Magazine names Charles Krug Traminer the “best California white wine”

1956: Peter Mondavi and André Tchelistcheff arrive in Germany and study filtration technology
adding to his pioneering work in cold sterile filtration for off-dry white wines

1957: Charles Krug Winery declared California State Park Historic Landmark #563

1959: Upon the death of her husband, Cesare, Rosa Mondavi becomes president of Charles Krug Winery

1963: The winery promotes the introduction of French oak barrels to Napa Valley

1966: Lincoln Ranch purchased – 92 acres of vineyard land in the Napa Valley

1968: Willow Lake purchased – 169 acres of vineyard land in Carneros-Napa Valley

1968: Slinsen Ranch purchased – 58 acres of vineyard land in the Napa Valley

1969: Homefinder’s Ranch purchased – 30 acres of vineyard land in the Napa Valley

1971: Fracchia Ranch purchased – 130 acres of vineyard land in the Napa Valley

1974: Charles Krug Winery listed on the National Register of Historic Places

1974: Page Ranch purchased – 75 acres of vineyard land in the Napa Valley

1975: Marc Mondavi conducts canopy management experiments found to reduce losses from mildew and
facilitate the ripening of grapes

1976: Upon Rosa’s death, Peter Mondavi Sr. becomes president of Charles Krug Winery

1981: Peter Mondavi Jr., with Hewlett-Packard, develops proprietary computer applications to enhance
the cold fermentation process developed by Peter Mondavi Sr.

1985: In a retrospective tasting of older Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Wine Spectator awards 95 points
to the winery’s 1944 Cabernet Sauvignon – the first vintage produced after Cesare and Rosa
Mondavi acquired the winery in 1943

1988: Peter Mondavi Sr. participates in the Wine Spectator’s California Wine Men Oral History Series in
cooperation with the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley

1991: Marc Mondavi creates his first blend of the Family Reserve Generations

1995: Peter Mondavi Sr. honored by the Napa Valley Vintners Association as one of the 12 Living
Legends of the Napa Valley

1999: The Peter Mondavi Sr. family undertakes a massive replanting project to focus on red Bordeaux
varietals; Peter Mondavi Jr. oversees extensive Bordeaux research project

2003: Cold Springs purchased – 50 acres of vineyard land in the Napa Valley

2005: Over 72% of the family’s vineyard acreage is now planted to red Bordeaux varietals; the winery
utilizes 100% estate sourced fruit for its red Bordeaux varietals

2007: Charles Krug is posthumously inducted into the Culinary Institute of America’s Vintners Hall of
Fame for his contributions to the early development of the wine industry

2008: A $25.6 million vineyard improvement program completed, resulting in 74% of family-owned
vineyards planted with red Bordeaux varietals

2009: Peter Mondavi Sr. receives the Lifetime Achievement Award from the California State Fair

2009: The Peter Mondavi Sr. family awarded the California Preservation Foundation’s Preservation
Design Award for the restoration of the Charles Krug Winery Redwood Cellar and Carriage
House

2009: The Peter Mondavi Sr. family awarded the Napa County Landmark Award of Merit for the

2010: Winery receives the Governor’s Historic Preservation Award for the restoration and seismic

2012: Peter Mondavi Sr. inducted into the Culinary Institute of America’s Vintners Hall of Fame for his
watershed contribution to the wine industry with his work on cold fermentation and sterile
filtration

2012: Winery goes live with solar; two inverters energized and winery generates its own electricity with
over 4,000 panels producing over 664 Kilowatts per hour

2013: Begun in 2012, famed architect Howard Backen completes the historic renovation of the
Redwood Cellar (the winery building constructed by Charles Krug in 1874). The new tasting room
and visitor center open in November

2014: To honor family matriarch Rosa Mondavi, Cucina di Rosa Trattoria is opened offering visitors
Italian-inspired cuisine

2016: On February 20, Peter Mondavi Sr. passed away at 101

2017: Salumeria opens in Charles Krug Tasting Room at the Cucina di Rosa
