1860: Charles Krug marries Carolina Bale of Napa Valley. Her dowry includes 540 acres of Napa Valley land
1861: Charles Krug establishes his eponymous winery in the Napa Valley. He plants his first vineyard and
again uses a cider press to crush grapes
1872: Charles Krug builds the Redwood Cellar – 1874 expands on the cellar after a fire

1943: The 137-acre Krug Ranch and the Charles Krug brand is now under the stewardship of the Mondavi
family; the old winery is renovated and the first cold-fermentation room in California is added and
replanting of the vineyard begins
1947: Brothers Robert and Peter Mondavi are among the founding members of the Napa Valley Technical
Group, formed to share knowledge and information with vintner members
1949: At Charles Krug Winery, the Mondavi Family produces California's first consumer newsletter,

facilitate the ripening of grapes

1976: Upon Rosa’s death, Peter Mondavi Sr. becomes president of Charles Krug Winery
1981: Peter Mondavi Jr., with Hewlett-Packard, develops proprietary computer applications to enhance
the cold fermentation process developed by Peter Mondavi Sr.
1985: In a retrospective tasting of older Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Wine Spectator awards 95 points
to the winery’s 1944 Cabernet Sauvignon – the first vintage produced after Cesare and Rosa
Mondavi acquired the winery in 1943
1988: Peter Mondavi Sr. participates in the Wine Spectator’s California Wine Men Oral History Series in
cooperation with the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley
1991: Marc Mondavi creates his first blend of the Family Reserve Generations
1995: Peter Mondavi Sr. honored by the Napa Valley Vintners Association as one of the 12 Living

1999: The Peter Mondavi Sr. family undertakes a massive replanting project to focus on red Bordeaux
varietals; Peter Mondavi Jr. oversees extensive Bordeaux research project
2003: Cold Springs purchased – 50 acres of vineyard land in the Napa Valley
2005: Over 72% of the family’s vineyard acreage is now planted to red Bordeaux varietals; the winery
utilizes 100% estate sourced fruit for its red Bordeaux varietals
2007: Charles Krug is posthumously inducted into the Culinary Institute of America’s Vintners Hall of
Fame for his contributions to the early development of the wine industry
2008: A $25.6 million vineyard improvement program completed, resulting in 74% of family-owned
vineyards planted with red Bordeaux varietals
2009: Peter Mondavi Sr. receives the Lifetime Achievement Award from the California State Fair
2009: The Peter Mondavi Sr. family awarded the California Preservation Foundation’s Preservation
Design Award for the restoration of the Charles Krug Winery Redwood Cellar and Carriage

watershed contribution to the wine industry with his work on cold fermentation and sterile
filtration
2012: Winery goes live with solar; two inverters energized and winery generates its own electricity with
over 4,000 panels producing over 664 Kilowatts per hour
2013: Begun in 2012, famed architect Howard Backen completes the historic renovation of the
Redwood Cellar (the winery building constructed by Charles Krug in 1874). The new tasting room
and visitor center open in November
2014: To honor family matriarch Rosa Mondavi, Cucina di Rosa Trattoria is opened offering visitors
Italian-inspired cuisine
2017: Salumeria opens in Charles Krug Tasting Room at the Cucina di Rosa
