Lesson: POLYNOMIAL , EXPONENTIAL∧LOGARITHMIC FUNCTIONS

A. Polynomial Functions  a function f is a polynomial function if ( x )=a n x n +a n−1 x n−1+ an−2 x n−2 +…+ a1 x 1+ a0 , where
a 0 , a1 , a2 , … , an are real constants and n is a whole number. (which means, no variables in the denominator, no
negative exponents, no fractional or decimal exponents, and no variables inside a radical sign)
1
∎ Ex: f ( x )=4 x 5−x 3 + x2 −6
2
B. Most common polynomial functions:

Name Form Example Degree Leading Characteristics

Coefficient
Constant f ( x )=a0 f ( x )=6 0 6 its graph is a horizontal line; has 0 slope
Zero f ( x )=a0; a 0=0 f ( x )=0 0 0 a line that coincides with the x-axis; has 0 slope
Linear f ( x )=a1 x 1 +a0 f ( x )=−2 x +5 1 −¿2 graph is a slant line; slope is a 1 & y-intercept is a 0
Quadratic f ( x )=a2 x 2 +a1 x 1+ a0 f ( x )=x 2−2 x +5 2 1 graph is a parabola that opens upward if a 2 is
positive or opens downward if a 2 is negative

 The Quadratic Function

−b
 x= is the axis of symmetry of the parabola
2a
4 ac−b 2 gives the minimum or maximum value of the function
 y=
4a
b 4 ac−b2 is the vertex of the parabola

(2a
,
4a )
 Domain : x ∈ or (−∞ ,+∞ )

 Range : y ≤
4 ac−b2 if the parabola is downward or
¿
4a
4 ac−b2 if the parabola is upward or
axis of y≥ ¿
symmetr 4a
y

 The Exponential Function

 the domain is  and the function is one-to-one

 for f ( x )=bx , the x−¿ axis is the horizontal asymptote of its graph
 if b x =b y , then x= y ; also if a x =b x , the a=b

f ( x )=2 x
