RATIONALE: The Haitian Revolution occurred during the period 1791 – 1804 and it recounts
how the enslaved were able to rise up against their oppressors and forcefully take their freedom.
This revolution was not only successful but it paved the way for Haiti to become the first county
to gain its independence in Latin America. It illustrates how the slaves were able to unite, show
resilience and strategize to fight against slavery and gain their freedom. It is for this reason
students should be taught about the Haitian revolution as it may serve as an inspirational event in
their lives.
