A factory has machines that produce toys, which are then packed by the factory’s
workers.
One day each machine produced 14 toys and each worker packed 2 toys, so that a
total of 40 toys remained unpacked. Additionally, the number of workers that day was
8 less than 7 times the number of machines. The system of equations below
represents this situation. Let m = number of machines and w = number of workers
{w = 7m − 8
14m − 2w = 40
a. Explain how each equation makes sense in the context of the problem.
Equation one shows the number of toys left over unpacked each day as for every
machine (m), there are 14 toys made (14m). And for every worker (w), 2 toys are
packed (2w). Therefore, each day, the leftover unpacked toys is equal to the number
of toys minus the number of packed toys (14m-2w).
In the second equation, it shows that simply, number of workers “w”, is 8 less that 7
times of the number of machines
b. How many machines and workers were there? Solve the system of equations to
find the number of workers and machines.
14m - 2(7m-8) = 40
14m - 14m + 16 = 40
16 = 40
