Flash card- 1
Introduction-
The terms 'work', 'energy' and 'power' are frequently used in everyday language. A woman carrying water from
a well to her house is said to be working. In a drought affected region she may be required to carry it over large
distances. If she can do so, she is said to have a large stamina or energy. Energy is thus the capacity to do work.
The term power is usually associated with speed. In physics we shall define these terms very precisely.
Work is said to be done when a force applied on the body displaces the body through a certain distance in the
direction of force.

Flash card- 2
Work done by constant force-
Work done W is defined as the dot product of force F and displacement s.

Here θ is the angle between   and   .

Work done by the force is positive if the angle between force and displacement is acute (0 °<θ<90°) as cos θ is
positive. This signifies, when the force and displacement are in same direction, work done is positive. This work
is said to be done upon the body.
When the force acts in a direction at right angle to the direction of displacement (cos90 ° =0), no work is done

(zero work).
Work done by the force is negative if the angle between force and displacement is obtuse (90 °<θ<180°)
ascosθ is negative. This signifies, when the force and displacement are in opposite direction, work done is
negative. This work is said to be done by the body.

Flash card- 3
Work done by variable force-
If applied force F is not a constant force, then work done by this force in moving the body from
position A to B will be,

Here ds is the small displacement.
Unit of work-
SI unit- Joule, 1 Joule = 1 Newton x 1 m
Work done is said to be one Joule, when 1 Newton force displaces the body through 1 metre in its own
direction.
C.G.S. unit- erg, 1erg=1dyne×1cm
Work done is said to be one erg when 1 dyne force displaces the body through 1 cm in its own direction.
Relation between Joule and erg:
1 Joule = 107 erg
Dimension of work: [ML2T-2]

Calculation of work using graphs

Flash card-5
Positive and negative work-
Work done by boy on the block W = Fs (Positive)
Work done by block on the boy W = -Fs (Negative) direction of force applied on the boy and direction of
displacement is opposite.
Whenever work is done there is a pair of force acting on the point of application. One force will act in the
direction of displacement.
 Positive work means supply of energy. (boy is doing positive work- it is supplying energy to the block)
 Negative work means gain of energy. (block is doing negative work- it is gaining energy from the boy)
Flash card- 6
Energy and its types:
Energy- it is the ability to do work.
Work is done whenever force produces some displacement. So, we can say that we require energy to apply
force.
Any object applying force on any other abject must have some energy.
SI unit of energy is Joule.
Types of Energy-
a) Kinetic Energy- due to the motion of the body
K.E = ½(mv2)
b) Potential Energy- Stored from of energy which can be used in doing work.
c) Dissipated Energy- It is the lost energy, once lost this energy can never be retrieved back to the system.
Work means transfer of energy. Whenever energy is transferred energy can be either used in the form of kinetic
energy or it may even be lost to the surroundings in the form of heat or sound.

Flash card- 7
Classification of forces based on energy transfer:
Based on energy transfer during work done force can be classified in two categories:
a) Conservative forces:
 These are the forces which never dissipates energy. (gravitational field, electrostatic force)
 Whenever these forces do work there is change in the potential energy of the system.
 If forces do positive work, there is decrease in the potential energy.
 If forces do positive work, there is increase in the potential energy.
 In conservative field work done always depends on initial and final position of body and is independent
from the path along which work is done.
b) Non-Conservative forces:
 These are forces of which work done is always dissipated and the system energy always decreases.
(frictional force, viscous force)
 In non-conservative field we never talk about potential energy.(Work done by non-conservative force is
always dissipated in the form of heat or sound so it can never be stored potential energy)

Q45) Assertion: A person working on a horizontal road with a load on his head does no work.
Reason: No work is said to be done, if directions of force and displacement of load are
perpendicular to each other.

B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the
assertion.

C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

D) If assertion is false but reason is true.

Answer: D) If assertion is false but reason is true.

When a body slides down on inclined plane, work done by friction is negative because it
opposes the motion (θ = 180° between force and displacement). If θ<90∘ then W = positive
because W=Fscosθ

Q52) Assertion: When a gas is allowed to expand, work done by gas is positive.

Reason: Force due to gaseous pressure and displacement (of piston) are in the same direction.

Flash Card-5

A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the

B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the
assertion.

C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

D) If the assertion and reason both are false.

Answer: A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of
the assertion.

Since the gaseous pressure and the displacement (of piston) are in the same direction.
Therefore θ=0∘, Work done = Fscosθ = Fs = Positive.

Thus during expansion work done by gas is positive.

Q53) Assertion: Comets move around the sun in elliptical orbits. The gravitational force on the
comet due to sun is not normal to the comets velocity but the work done by the gravitational
force over every complete orbit of the comet is zero.

A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the
assertion.
B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the
assertion.

C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

D) If the assertion and reason both are false.

Answer: C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

The gravitational force on the comet due to the sun is a conservative force. Since the work
done by a conservative force over a closed path is always zero (irrespective of the nature of
path), the work done by the gravitational forces over every complete orbit of the comet is
zero.

Q54) Assertion: When the force retards the motion of a body, the work done is zero.

Reason: Work done depends on angle between force and displacement.

Flash Card-1

assertion.

B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the
assertion.

C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

D) If assertion is false but reason is true.

Answer: D) If assertion is false but reason is true.

When the force retards the motion, the work done is negative. Work done depends on the
angle between force and displacement W=Fscosθ

Flash Card-2

A) 1920 J
B) 2000 J
C) 1820 J
D) 3000 J
Answer: A) 1920
Total height he has to climb = 20 x 12cm = 240cm = 2.4m
Work done = W = mgh

W = 80 x 10 x 2.4 = 1920 J

Q56) In which of the following cases the work done increases the potential energy?
Flash Card-7

A) Both conservative and non-conservative forces.

B) Conservative force only

C) Non-conservative force only

D) Neither conservative nor non-conservative force.

Answer: B) Conservative force only

In case of non-conservative forces, the work done is dissipated as heat, sound etc. i.e it does
not increase the potential energy. But in case of conservative forces, work done is responsible

A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the
assertion.

B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the
assertion.

C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

D) If the assertion and reason both are false.

Answer: A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of
the assertion.
Work done in moving a body against a conservative force is independent of the path
followed.

Q61) Assertion: A work done in moving a body over a closed loop is zero for every force in
nature.

Reason: Work done does not depend on nature of force.

Flash Card-1

A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the
assertion.
B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the
assertion.

C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

D) Assertion and reason both are false.

Answer: D) Assertion and reason both are false.

Work done in the motion of a body over a closed loop is zero only when the body is moving
under the action of conservative forces (like gravitational or electrostatic forces). i.e. work
done depends upon the nature of force.
Q62) Flash Card-3

Q63) If W1,W2 and W3 represent the work done in moving a particle from A to B along three
different paths 1, 2 and 3 respectively (as shown) in the gravitational field of a point mass m,
