Problem
When attempting to open an Application in FactoryTalk View Studio, or when attempting to run a FactoryTalk View
SE client the following error appears:

FactoryTalk View cannot authenticate with the SQL Server 2008 Express Instance 'FTVIEWx64TagDb' on
machine using the 'FTVIEWUSER' user account. Please run 'FTVIEWUSER Account Reset' utility machine to
reset the 'FTVIEWUSER' account to its default.

Environment
FactoryTalk View ME/SE
Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008
Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit

Cause
This can be caused by any of the following

1. The FTVIEWUSER account's name has been changed

2. The FTVIEWUSER account's roles have been changed
3. The FTVIEWUSER account is locked out, disabled, or deleted
4. The SA password contains special characters ( !,?,:,<,>, etc...).

Solution 1
Run the FTVIEWUSER Account Reset Utility.

1. Go to Start --> All Programs --> Rockwell Software --> FactoryTalk View --> Tools --> FTVIEWUSER
Account Reset utility
2. Enter correct password for SA account, then click Next
3. Reset the FTVIEWUSER account to its default or assign the password the same as SA account.
4. Reboot the computer

Note: You may receive an error after clicking next on the FTVIEWUSER Account Reset Utility that states:

The password is incorrect

If this is the case, make sure that the SA password does not include any special characters ( !,?,:,<,>, etc...).
These are allowed to be part of the password in Microsoft SQL server, but the FTVIEWUSER Account Reset
Utility will not accept these special characters.

If your SA password does have special characters, you will need to install the SQL Server Management Studio in
order to access the FTVIEWx64TAGDB database and change the SA password.

To install SQL management studio for FactoryTalk View SE version 9, please download the installer directly from
Microsoft (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7593).

The installation media for FactoryTalk View SE version 8 and some earlier versions have an installation for SQL
Server Management Studio in the installation media:

1. Navigate to the SQL install on the FactoryTalk View SE media. The file you want to run is located in the
following directory:
FTView\Redist\SQLServer2008\SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exe
2. When the application launches, select New Installation or add features to an existing installation
3. Select New Installation or add shared features
4. Accept the license terms, and click Next
5. Check Management Tools --> Basic. Everything else can be unchecked, aside from those that are greyed
out.
6. Click Next until it begins installing. Once complete, close the window, and also close the SQL Server
Installation Center
7. Launch SQL Server Management Studio by going to Start --> All Programs --> Microsoft SQL Server 2008
R2 --> SQL Server Management Studio
8. Be sure that you have the server name and database name FTVIEWX64TAGDB correct, and click Connect.
9. Expand Security --> Logins in the object explorer on the left hand side of the screen
10. Double-click on the SA account
11. Create a new password without special characters and uncheck Enforce password policy
12. Click OK
13. Go back and run the FTVIEWUSER Account Reset Utility as above.

Solution 2
Verify the SQL Server (FTVIEWX64TAGDB) service Logon settings.

1. Right click on My Computer

2. Select Manage
3. Go to Services and Application-->Services
4. Scroll down through services and locate the SQL Server (FTVIEWX64TAGDB) service.
5. Right-click on the service and select Properties
6. Click the Log On tab and select Local System account
7. Click Apply, OK and reboot the PC.

Solution 3
Verify that Windows Programs and Features has Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the HMI Server
computer. If it does not exist:

1. Make sure any Microsoft SQL Services are not started, then delete the MSSQL10_50.FTVIEWX64TAGDB folder
in the following locations:

64-bit:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\

32-bit:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\

2. If the instance was deleted, then reboot the computer.

3. Make sure that a password is set for the local administrator account.
a. Open Computer Management
b. Click on Local Users and Groups
c. Right click on Administrator user
d. Click on Properties
e. Uncheck Account is disabled
f. Log into Windows using Administrator account with password. If this account doesn't have a password
assigned, set one for it.
4. Re-install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 from the FactoryTalk View SE installation media.
a. For FactoryTalk View SE 9.0 installation media, navigate to folder \9.00.00-FTView-
DVD\Redist\SQLServerEXPR_2008R2SP2VS2103 and run the application SQLServerinstall.exe .
b. After installation, reboot.
5. If the installation shows an error that FTViewX64Tagdb already exists, the only way to uninstall it is to first
install a temporary instance first.
a. Run this installation instead from the above path: SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe. Upon install create a
temporary instance when prompted.
b. After installation, reboot.
6. Remove the FTViewx64Tagdb instance by following 634053 - Removing the FTVIEWX64TAGDB instance
and SQL Server 2008 R2 (//rockwellautomation.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/634053)
7. Repeat Step 3 above to install a new FTViewx64Tagdb instance, and reboot.
