Setting

The movie “The Choice” by Nicholas Sparks happened in Beaufort, North Carolina
United States. Established in 1709 and incorporated in 1723, Beaufort is the third-oldest town in
North Carolina. Beaufort was ranked as "America's Coolest Small Town. The movie was set
from May 1996 to June 2007. The setting brought the mood of calmness, long summers and a
slow pace of life. The small town has a river that enables the characters to cruise with their yacht
and have barbecues near the river. This type of setting is usually in the provinces from the
Philippine perspective. Moreover the setting coincides with the attitude of the male protagonist
that is calm and easy going fellow.
In addition, the setting is platonic for anyone aspiring true love, where there are no piles
of preoccupations or distractions that are mostly present in highly urbanized areas. It is in this
small town that everybody knows everyone. And most likely people are kind and polite. From
this setting, the story of two persons grew from neighbors to genuine lovers.
Another place in the setting that may be worthy of being mentioned is the hospital the
workplace of the female protagonist. This is where she fell in love and fell out love for her fomer
boyfriend. And most of all, this was the place where she almost left this world. Tears, sorrowful
words and the experience of losing the person you love most happen in the said place. From this
place, realizations that brought more meaning to love came to light.

Comment
The conflict of the plot is not enough to reach a desirable or momentous climax. The
conflict also allows some readers or viewers to almost predict the next scenario or events. Thus it
may lose the appeal to some. Maybe the conflict did not stir enough momentum to reach a
desirable climax this may be due to misappropriate movie adaptation. Although this comment is
from the observation of the student, it may seem to be valid since there are reviews that
somehow supports this comment.

Reflection

The Choice as movie began by stating that in every moment of our life, we make choices
and this choices lead to another decision making. This statement is undeniably true. It was also
showcased in this movie the series of choices the characters have chosen, one led to another.
Like for example choosing a boyfriend over a stranger, a long term relationship over newly spark
love, and to cheat over to be faithful. Amidst the series of choices of the characters, the emphasis
is that the choice should be from the heart and should make you happy. For the student writing
the review, the series of choices made by the characters surely made them happy that is only on
their part. On the other hand, what about the effect of the choices to the person who was not
chosen. This too, should be taken into consideration. For freedom always comes with
responsibility, for a promise is not meant to be broken. Promises must be kept. For what are
promises that are not kept. A choice can also make or break you or the other person receiving the
consequences of your choice. Freedom is not absolute. Rationality and goodness should be the
boundaries of freedom. If it goes beyond goodness and rationality the choice means hurting the
other. However, the series of choices made by the characters cannot be easily judged. It would
take a lot to judge them. Maybe a higher being whose goodness and rationality are unlimited
should be the rightful judge.
On the note of choice, in the last part of the movie, the male protagonist was given a
choice to let go or to hold on. This is regarding his wife the female protagonist who is in comma
for almost 90 days, the doctor made mention of the statistics of how unlikely the chances of
recovery, the number is less than one percent. The male protagonist was face with a waiver of
words DO NOT RESUCITATE… immediately without hesitation the male protagonist said he
cannot let go of her, with words and tears and all. For several days, the choice never fail to
present itself the answer of the male protagonist was constant. This says heavy is the burden with
freedom. The male character had a tough choice still he came through. The efforts of holding on
became fruitful, his wife woke up and came home. Happiness is always a choice. But sometimes
one must undergo painful and hard choices to reach genuine happiness.
