Building My Life on a Solid Foundation

1 Peter 2:1-12

Let’s take our Bibles together … turn to 1 Peter 2:1-12 …

If you are visiting here this morning … Welcome you

… you just started attending Klamath Christian Center

One of the things I hope you catch from the life of this church …

… “We love Jesus” …

He is the focal point of our faith … He is the reason for our joy …

… He is the source of our hope …

If there is anything I could hope for in 2016 …

… If there is anything look back on this year and say …

… My prayer … “That we would love Jesus more” … Amen?

I know the world around us is talking about setting goals

… as we head into 2016 …

… “Getting more exercise … eating healthier

… getting organized … getting our finances in order

… Those are great things … “Do all that!” … that is good …

“If we don’t love Jesus more” … none of that will matter

1
I love the verse … we read a couple months ago … 1 Peter 1:8

Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not
see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and
glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation
of your souls. 1 Peter 1:8-9

When I read that verse again this last week … I couldn’t help but wonder

… what Peter was thinking … when He wrote that verse

Peter … … had seen the Lord … as one of Jesus disciples …

… He got to spend time with Jesus … hear him teach … miracles

… I think … what meant more to Peter … His Smile … touch …

I wondered … if He ever missed Jesus … Physically …

… He had the Holy Spirit … like we do …

… I feel like I can almost hear that in his voice … writing that verse

Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not
see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and
glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation
of your souls.1 Peter 1:8-9

Peter loved Jesus … you can feel it in that verse …

… He missed Jesus … He was looking forward to being with Jesus …

… He was proud of the faith of the people who He was writing to …

My prayer is that we would love Jesus more at the end of 2016 … “Amen?”

Review: Let’s do a little review of 1 Peter … before we get started Ch 2

Peter is writing to people in Asia Minor … Modern day turkey …

… He mentions several regions … in chapter 1 …

… v.1-3 … Pontus … Galatia … Capadocia … Asia Bythinia

Map: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Galaatia&FORM=HDRSC2

… they were saved through Paul’s ministry

Paul started a church in Ephesus … Acts 19 … school … 2 years

… All of Asia minor … was evangelized …

The People … are going through a terrible time of persecution …

Nero … Emperor … extinguish Christianity from the face of the earth …

… They had persecution from Rome … martyrs …

… These were Jewish people … many … had Jewish Faith

… when they came to Jesus … no longer Jewish

3
… They had persecution from the Greek culture …

… in Greek literature … slanderously … referred to as cannibals

“this world is not my home I am just passing through” …

… They were very dis-enfranchised … “Unwanted” … rejected

Peter encouraged them in this letter … to “Stand firm” in their faith

… God had chosen them … before the foundation of the earth

… the Holy Spirit had drawn them … not an accident …

… they had been born again to a living Hope …

… that their faith … more precious than Gold … which perishes

… thought tested by fire …

… would result in Praise glory and honor … when Jesus appeared

Therefore, gird your minds for action, be sober in spirit, fix your hope full on
the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.
1 Peter 1:13

How many believe … Jesus is coming back …

… Ron Mehl … Mother … “Is today the day when Jesus will return”

… As believers … in the day we live …

… there is a certain amount of … persecution … rejection …

if you are a follower of Jesus … people might roll their eyes … put off

4
There is a certain amount of prejudice …

… narrowed minded … Bigoted … slander …

… as Christians are losing their rights … public arena … political arena

There are others ways we become dis-enfranchised in this life

I was talking to a brother … who lost his wife this last year …

… “Life has lost it’s innocence” …

… You can lose your health … money … job … problems with family

… marriage …

Here in America … we get so much of our value …

… on what the world says is important … “Having the right look”

… being young and tanned … beautiful

“This world is not my Home … I am just passing through”

Peter’s words to us … Stand firm”

Therefore, gird your minds for action, be sober in spirit, fix your hope full on
the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.
1 Peter 1:13

Let’s get started with Chapter 2 …

“Building My Life on a Solid Foundation”

5
Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and
slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so
that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted
that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God
and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a
spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,

a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”
7
Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not
believe,
“The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,”
8
and,
“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”
They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they
were destined for.
9
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s
special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you
out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but
now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now
you have received mercy.
11
Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful
desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the
pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your
good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. 1 Peter 2:4-12

About a month ago … I was getting some exercise at the work out center

… I was sitting on the bench press machine …

A friend … who I don’t know real well … He knows I am a pastor …

… “Can I ask you a question?” … “Sure” … He’s a Christian

6
“Are we making too Big of a deal about Jesus?” …

… He attends a church … Bible Study …

… “Are we making God the Father Jealous?”

… I wasn’t totally surprised by what He said … I have heard it before

My answer … “How can we make TOO BIG of a deal about Jesus?”

“There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven
given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

Jesus Himself is the one who said … to Thomas … John 14 …

… “If you have seen me you have seen the father …”

… “I and the Father are one.”

“I am the way … the truth and the life …” … John 14:6

“I am the resurrection and the life …” … John 11:25

… 1John 5 … “He who has the Son has the life …”

… 1John 4 … He who has the Son has the Father as well …

We can’t make too big of a deal about Jesus …

… because the Bible makes a Big deal about Jesus …

Here in 1 Peter 2 … Peter makes a powerful statement about Jesus

He is the cornerstone of everything God is building …

7
… Throughout History … and for all eternity …

… Old Testament as well as the New Testament

He is the Key to Building My Life on a solid Foundation …

… If you want to build your life on a Solid Foundation

1. Build your life on Faith in Jesus Christ …

The Cornerstone … is … key to the foundation … essential piece …

… when we think of the “Foundation” of a building

… We think of concrete … forms …

Foundations aren’t Glamorous …

But Foundations are certainly important …

8
… A solid foundation is the key to a building that lasts …

… A foundation … determines the size … shape of the building …

… the character of the building … the quality of the building

In Bible Days … they didn’t use concrete … they used … stones

… that were especially cut in a quarry …

… they had to be cut very accurately …

… Carefully placed … everything lined up

I read about a cornerstone … a stone cut in a quarry … pit …

… that was very old … ancient …

… It was a cornerstone … because of the quality … shape …

… 69 feet long … 12 feet wide … 13 feet tall …

How they moved a stone like that into place

I have been to Israel … Stones are as Big as a “Fire Truck”

1) Jesus is the cornerstone … to everything that God is building

Where do you get your strength to stand when life is falling apart?

Where do you get the courage to make the right decisions …

What motivates you … when it hurts … to love?

9
Where do you find your peace in the midst of the storm?

One of the things you learn as you go through life …

Life is always changing …

… your friends Change … your families change … kids grow up …

… careers change … job changes … your health … finances

There is one thing that never changes …

“I the Lord do not change. Malachi 3:6

“Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever!” Hebrews 13:8

“No one can lay any other foundation than the one we have already laid –
Jesus Christ!” 1 Corinthians 3:11

One of the reasons …

… relationships fail … marriages fail … businesses … lives fall apart …

… They aren’t built on the right foundation …to begin with …

… they had no solid basis to stand

If you want to build a great life …

… you are going to need a great foundation in your life

What’s interesting …

… Jesus is the stone … the builders rejected

10
God has laid Him in the pathway of every person

… and you can just step over him … go on your way …

Either you will build your life on Him … or you will trip over Him

… you can’t be neutral …

He will either be the foundation of your life …

… or the stumbling block in your life

For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,

a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”
7
Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not
believe,
“The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,”
8
and,
“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”
1 Peter 2:6-8

If you want to build your life on a solid foundation …

#1 Build your life on Faith in Jesus Christ!

#2 … If you want to build your life on a solid foundation

2. Make love the motive of everything you do.

11
Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and
slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so
that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted
that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:1-3

There are lots of conflicts in relationships …

… lots of confusion in the work place …

… lots of frustration in families …

If you want to build your life on a solid foundation …

… Make love the motivation behind everything you do!

I love this picture in verse 2 …

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow
up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
1 Peter 2:2-3

… what is spiritual milk? … Grace …

… when you understand God’s love for you …

… when you understand God’s forgiveness …

It helps you deal with a lot of the resentments in this life

… a lot of the hurts … difficulties …

And now these three abide: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is
love. 1 Corinthians 13:13

12
You can have … all kinds of accomplishments in this life …

You can receive all kinds of awards …

You can own all kinds of stuff …

… But if you don’t know how to love … you miss the whole purpose of life

“The only thing that matters is faith expressing itself through love”
Galatians 5:6

If you want to build your life on a solid foundation …

… Make Love the motive behind everything you do

… You must …

3. Gather the right kind of people around you …

… in your life … the right kind of companions to walk with …

Did you know … the people you associate with … will determine the level

… of success in your life …

… If you hang around people who are negative …

… you will become negative …

… If you hang around people who are resentful … bitter

… you will become resentful

… If you hang around people who are depressed …

… you are 160 times more likely to become depressed

13
How many have seen the plaque …

“It is hard to soar with eagles … when you work with Turkey!”

Peter uses are great picture of what God is doing in our life

… Jesus is the corner stone … of everything God is building

… in History … and for all eternity

And we … are living stones …

you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy
priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus
Christ. 1 Peter 2:5

The picture Peter is using … of the Temple …

… the Temple … was the place of God’s presence

… The temple … was the place where people came to meet with God

God is doing something special in our lives …

… the presence of God is here …

… The presence of God is there in our relationships

When we come to Jesus … we receive life from Him

When we come to Jesus … we shaped by Him …

… fit together … “Like living stones into a spiritual house”

… when you get saved … you are just saved for yourself …

14
… You are saved to a community …

When Jesus said … “I will build my church …

… “Eccelsia … we are saved from something … to something

One of the reason we talk about classes … groups …

… We are called together … we are a place of His presence “Together”

One of the signs of Revival …

… When people understand that have a ministry

… They are a royal priesthood …

… offering sacrifices to God

… offering God to others …

We are living stones … together … we make the spiritual house

… dwelling of God

… We are shaped together … we support one another

If you want to build a life on a solid foundation …

#1 Build your life on Faith in Jesus Christ

#2 Make Love the motivation in everything you do

#3 Gather the right companions … to walk with you … grow … serve

15
4. Commit your life to a Great Purpose!

That’s what Peter is trying to help the believers of Asia Minor see

… God has called them to a great purpose …

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special
possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of
darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now
you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you
have received mercy. 1 Peter 2:9-10

Did you know … the people we see in history … who were great …

… Martin Luther King Jr

… Abraham Lincoln … Dwight D Eisenhower

They were great people … because … they committed themselves to a

great cause …

… they lived at a time … where something significant was happening

… the significance of the moment … drew something out of them

They responded to the challenge …

Great people are simply ordinary people … who make a great commitment

… to a great cause … and it draws something out of them

… It draws character out of them … It draws courage out of them

… It draws conviction out of them …

… It draws passion out of them

16
You need something bigger than yourself …

… to draw you out of yourself

17
