1. Loading
The duties of the shipowner
The shipowner ‘s duty is to send the ship to the
agreed or in absence of special agreement , to the
usual place of loading. He must the give notice to
the charterer that the ship is ready to load. If he
fails to do so ,and delay in commencing to load is
thereby caused, the charterer will not be
responsible , as he is not bound to look out for the
ship.

1. He must procure a cargo .
2. He must bring it alongside the vessel .
3. He must load a full and complete cargo.
4. He must load in the time stipulated.
2. Discharge
Naming the port of discharge
In the case of a general ship the port of discharge is
stated in the bill of lading , but where the ship is
chartered , two cases arise which must be carefully
distinguished:
