PROBLEM STATEMENT
A 3-ϕ overhead line has resistance and reactance per phase of 20and 60 Ω, respectively.
The supply voltage is 220 kV while the load- end voltage is maintained at 190 kV for all
loads by an automatically controlled synchronous phase modifier. If the kVAr rating of the
modifier has the same value for zero loads as for a load of 80MW, find the rating of
the synchronous phase modifier.

Solution:

Vs = AVr + BIr
Vs = Vr + IrZ
Vs=220 KV/√3=127.09
Vr=190 kv/√3=109.76
Z=20+j60
Assuming short line model
Vs = Vr + IrZ
127.07=109.76+Ir[20+j60]
Ir=17.31/[20+j60]
Ir=17.31/63[cos71+jsin 71]=0.2746/[cos71+jsin 71]
Pr=VrIrcosØr=80 MW
Vs = Vr + IrZ

NOW
A=1
a=0
Β=71
B=0.2746

[127.07]2 =[1097.6]2 +02746[(80/109.76)2 +(Qr)2 /109.76)2

+2*0.2748*80cos(0-71)-[2*0.2746*Qr*sin(0-71)
16146=12047+0.14599+1193(Qr)2 +14314-0.5176Qr
So

1193(Qr)2 +05176Qr+40845=0
Solving for Qr
Qr=-35 MVAR
