INSTRUCTIONS:
THIS TEST IS MADE UP OF THREE PARTS, PART A MULTIPLE CHOICE, PART B DEFINITIONS AND PART C
SHORT CALCULATIONS. YOU ARE ADVICED TO ATTEMPT ALL QUESTIONS AND SHOW WORKING OUT
TO EARN FULL MARKS. TIME ALLOWED IS 40 MINUTES, IF YOU'RE FOUND CHEATING YOUR PAPERS
WILL BE INVALID.
2. In which point indicated by latters in the following diagram would the total pressure be highest?
3. What is the density of substance X in kg/m^3 if it has a specific gravity of 2.22 lowered in water
D. As we move in a moving fluid, the sum of pressure plus kinetic energy per unit volume does not
remain constant
5. An empty density bottle has a mass of 25g. Its mass is 50g when full of water and 45g when full of
another liquid. What is the specific gravity of the liquid?
Define: (2 marks)
1. Specific Gravity
2. Surface Tension
State: ( 2 marks)
1. Archimedes' Principle
2. Law of flotation
Q1. An empty density bottle has a mass of 25g. Its mass is 50g when full of water and 45g. when full of
another liquid. (3 marks)
Q2. For a hydraulic hoist, the area of the small piston is 0.001m2 while the area of the large piston is
0.1m^2. What weight can be lifted by the large piston when a force of 70N is applied to the small
piston? (3 marks)
Q3. A ball of mass 2kg having a diameter of 50cm falls in the swimming pool. Calculate its buoyant
force and volume of water displaced. (5 marks)
Q4. Water enters a house from a ground pipe with an inside diameter of 2.0cm at an absolute
pressure of 4.0 x 105Pa. A pipe that is 1.0cm in diameter leads to the second floor bathroom 5.0m
above the ground floor. The flow speed at the ground pipe is 1.5ms^-1. Find the:

Q5. A hot air balloon is tethered the ground on a windless day. The envelop of the balloon contains
1400 m^3 of hot air is density 0.8 kg/m^3. The mass of the balloon ( not including the mass of the hot
air) is 400 kg/m^3. The density of the surrounding air is 1.3 kg/m^3.
(5 marks)
(a) calculate the tension in the rope holding the balloon down.
(b) calculate the acceleration with which the balloon begins to rise when released.
Q6. A fully loaded aircraft has a mass of 3.3 x 10^5 kg. It's oral wing area is 500m^2. It is in level flight
with a speed of 960 km/h
a) Calculate the pressure differencce between the wing lower and upper surface of the wing.
b) Using Bernoulli's principle and ignore small difference in height between the top and the bottom
side of the wing. Calculate the percentage increase in speed (v2) of the air on the upper surface wing
relative to the lower lover surface. (Density of air is 1.2 kg/m^3) (5 marks)
