Pipe Wall Thickness Calculation as per ASME B31.3 SHJ-BMS-EN-VSS-L-2654 0
GENERAL NOTES
1. This spreadsheet calculates the minimum design wall thickness based on the internal
pressure and the corresponding standard nearest available thickness of pipe for different
pipe sizes and for the given set of process and material parameters.
2. This spreadsheet is not valid for t ³ D/6 or P/SE > 0.385. The user shall refer to ASME B31.3
para 304.1.2 (b).
3. The user shall fill data in the cells highlighted yellow only.
4. The spreadsheet calculates the values of cells highlighted green.
5. Mill undertolerance on thickness may be either a percentage of the thickness (c2) or a fixed
quantity in mm (c3), as specified by the pipe material standard. Only one of the two values
shall be filled in.
6. If the calculations have to be submitted as an independent document or as part of any other
document, then only sheet "4. Calculation" shall be submitted.
7. Sheet "4. Calculation" shall be printed to "Adobe PDF" before submitting. It shall not be
submitted in Excel format.
8. Sheets "6. Stress-1" to "9. E and Y" contain reference data extracted from the ASME and ASTM
standards commonly required for calculations. This data may not be exhaustive and the user
shall refer the relevant standards for any additional data required.
9. Sheets "6. Stress-1" and "7. Stress-2" may be used to interpolate stress values for
intermediate temperatures. The applicable design temperature shall be entered in the
relevant yellow highlighted cell in row 4.
10. Sheet "10. API5L" contains the standard pipe wall thickness table from the standard API 5L.
This table is automatically read by the spreadsheet and hence need not be referred to by the
user.
11. Sheets "11. B36.10" to "12. B36.19" contain the standard pipe wall thickness tables (scheduled
thicknesses only) from the standards ASME B36.10 and B36.19. These tables are
automatically read by the spreadsheet and hence need not be referred to by the user.
12. Sheet "13. B36.10 All" contains the standard pipe wall thickness table (all listed thicknesses)
from standard ASME B36.10. This table may be referred to by the user for deciding the
selected thicknesses.
13. The weld joint strength factor (W) shall be taken as 1.0 at temperatures of 510°C
and below, and 0.5 at 815°C for all materials. The strength reduction factor shall be linearly
interpolated for intermediate temperatures. Refer ASME B31.3 para 302.3.5(e).

It shall be ensured that the mill undertolerance on the thickness of pipes and butt welded
fittings is the same. If fittings with undertolerance of 12.5% as per ASME B16.9 are used, then
the same undertolerance shall be used for the pipe wall thickness calculation. If
undertolerance 0.3mm is used for pipe wall thickness calculation, then fittings with the same
undertolerance shall be procured and used.
