Assumptions
This service manual assumes that you have attended the Trimble service-training
course for the Recon X. It also assumes that you have appropriate knowledge
and understanding of:
• The operating system and software for the computer system that you
use
The photographs and drawings in this service manual show the relationship
between all assemblies that are considered to be serviceable. Serviceable
assemblies are defined as assemblies that can be repaired at the Trimble
Service Center level. The following factors determine whether an assembly
can be serviced:
Note – An absence of specific alerts does not mean that there are no safety
risks involved.
ESD is generated in many ways. For example, it can be the result of simple
contact, the separation of materials or the normal motion of people working
with the device. Depending on the magnitude of the charge, device
substrates can be punctured or destroyed by contact with, or by mere
proximity to, a static charge. The result can be immediate destruction, early
failure of the device, or degradation of device performance.
2. Snap the end of the mat grounding cable onto the common point
ground connection on the mat.
3. Connect the other end of the cable to an electrical earth ground, such
as a third wire utility ground.
4. Use the common point ground connection to plug the wrist strap cable
into the mat grounding cable.
Note – Put on the wrist strap. The wrist strap must fit snugly. To adjust it, unclasp
the buckle latch, adjust the size, and re-clasp the latch.
It is now safe to handle components and printed circuit assemblies on the mat.
Note – Always repackage all ESD sensitive components before you disconnect
the wrist strap.
The battery is supplied partially charged. Charge the battery for 12 hours before
using it for the first time. If the battery has been stored for longer than six months,
charge it before use.
Discharge the battery before disposing of it. When disposing of the battery, be
sure to do so in an environmentally sensitive manner. Adhere to any local and
national regulations concerning battery disposal or recycling.

Introduction
The Recon X is a rugged handheld computer that was designed for use in
surveying systems or as a stand-alone computing device. The Recon X was
redesigned with a new PCA, Display and Display seal. The new version of Recon
X now has a new part number prefix designation (RE5-XXXXXX) and also has a
different serial number prefix (DSXXXXXXXX). For more information on identifying
what model you have refer to _________
The Recon X also comes with a removable top cap assembly that allows access
to Compact Flash (Type I/II)
Unlike many Windows CE devices, the Recon X has no RAM-based file system.
All files are stored either in the Flash Memory or on an external CF/SD memory
card. This means that all stored data is maintained even if power is lost. The
Recon X (RE3) comes with WM5 installed but on the Recon X (RE5) WM6 is the
current operating system. An upgrade to WM6 is available for the Recon X
(RE3).
To turn on the ReconX press the power key on the lower left side of the
keypad. If the handheld is on and the power key is pressed, the handheld
will go into suspend mode. Suspend mode is a low power mode that maintains
the contents of RAM while keeping the device in an inactive state.
To recover from suspend mode press power key again to turn on the
handheld.
Theory of Operation
Keypad
Touch screen
The Recon X has a TFT touch screen. Providing proper care and handling of the
display while servicing the unit prolongs the life of the touch screen.
Backlighting
By default the display backlight is on and set to 50% power. To change the
settings of the backlight tap Start / Settings / System / Backlight and select the
desired option.
Selectable backlight
options.
Theory of Operation
Top Cap
Under the top cap there are two CF (Type I and II) slots.
To insert a CF card, gently insert the cards with the front of the card facing the
display side of the unit. Always push the card in straight, never force it or insert it
at an angle.
Caution – Do not use the unit without reattaching the cap. The unit is
NOT sealed when the cap is off and water damage can occur and
will void the warranty.
The Recon X battery contains the communication interface for the unit. Each
battery contains one RS-232 serial port, one USB type B and a power port.
NiMH Battery
The Recon X uses a NiMH battery pack that powers up the unit and is charged
using linear charging technology. The battery pack can be charged inside or
outside of the unit.
Battery Charging
The battery can be charged in the unit or out of the unit with an external battery
charger (accessory item). Connect the appropriate charger into the unit. The
unit will be fully charged in about 12 hours. A full charge is indicated by the
battery icon in the operating systems on the screen’s upper right side.
Warning – Be sure to only use the AC adapter for this unit. Use of other
adapters will void the product warranty.
Theory of Operation
The battery is designed to be changed quickly. The unit saves enough power
that if you swap the battery within approximately one minute, it will not trigger a
reset. If the power runs out before a new battery is installed, the unit will reset.
If the power runs out before the new battery is installed, all data that was not
previously saved to Flash Memory will be lost.
1. Save important data in case the battery exchange takes too long.
2. Remove the hand strap from the unit.
3. Ensure the unit is turned off using Safe off. Safe off ensures that alarms
will not wake up the unit while changing the battery.
4. Use the supplied stylus to unlock the cam locks on the battery.
5. Remove the battery from the unit.
6. Quickly insert the replacement battery onto the unit.
7. Lock the battery into place.
8. Replace the hand strap.
9. Turn the unit ON to resume operation.

Wireless LAN
If your unit comes with embedded WLAN capability, also known as 802.11 or Wi-
Fi, you can wirelessly transmit data to and from your unit by connecting to
available access points or hot spots. Once connected, you can access the
Internet and other network information, send and receive email and use virtual
private networks (VPNs) for secure remote access.
To find out if you have built-in WLAN available in your unit, tap Start / Settings /
System / System Information / Wireless.
The WLAN is off by default and reverts to OFF after every reset. To turn the WLAN
on or off;
1. Tap WLAN from the Today screen or tap Start / Settings / Connections /
Wireless Manager
2. Tap Wireless LAN.
3. The unit will automatically detect wireless networks or hot spots. (There
can be a slight delay before it updates.)
4. Turn Wireless LAN off when not in use to save battery power and possibly
speed up other processes.
Note – The Internet connection is one in which Virtual Private Network (VPN)
services are not involved and proxy servers may or may not be utilized. This can
include a typical Internet connection through a corporate wireless network. A
Work connection allows you to view file shares on a corporate network.

seconds.
Software
To program Recon X units after repairs or to update software, Trimble uses a
proprietary application called Web Borker. This application will automatically
download and install software onto the Recon X as well as re-license the
software on the Recon X. For example: Windows Mobile 5/6 and all applicable
Survey Pro modules will be automatically licensed for use.
Note – Only authorized service providers who have attended Recon X (or
its brand of products) service training will be able to register for this
software.
When approval is granted you may log in with the password provided and at
the Main Menu select Download Borker.
