General Information and

Safety

Deciding What Can Be Serviced

The photographs and drawings in this service manual show the relationship
between all assemblies that are considered to be serviceable. Serviceable
assemblies are defined as assemblies that can be repaired at the Trimble
Service Center level. The following factors determine whether an assembly
can be serviced:

• the tools required to complete the repair

• the time it takes to complete the work

Possible Loss of Warranty

If a Trimble product is not serviced properly, or if it is repaired by someone

other than an authorized technician, the manufacturer’s warranty on the
product can become void. To prevent the loss of warranty coverage,
always comply exactly with the instructions in this service manual.

Removing and Replacing Parts

The torque specifications, adhesives and procedures specified in this service

manual are essential to the proper operation of the Recon X. For details,
refer to the instructions in Chapter 4, Maintenance and Repair.

Warnings and Cautions

Note – An absence of specific alerts does not mean that there are no safety
risks involved.

Always follow the instructions that accompany a Warning or Caution. The

information they provide is intended to minimize the risk of personal injury
and/or damage to the equipment. In particular, observe safety instructions
that are presented in the following formats:

022498-041 Revision B Page 11 of 46 Recon X Service Manual

Chapter 1

General Information and

Safety

Warning – A warning alerts you to a likely risk of serious injury to your

person and/or damage to the equipment. A warning identifies the
nature of the risk and the extent of possible injury and/or damage. It
also describes how to protect yourself and/or the equipment from this
risk. Warnings that appear in the text are repeated at the front of the
service manual.

Caution – A Caution alerts you to a possible risk of damage to the

equipment and/or loss of data. A Caution describes how to protect
the equipment and/or data from this risk.

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

The Recon X was constructed in an ESD-protected environment. Most of the

semiconductor devices in the instrument are susceptible to ESD damage.

ESD is generated in many ways. For example, it can be the result of simple
contact, the separation of materials or the normal motion of people working
with the device. Depending on the magnitude of the charge, device
substrates can be punctured or destroyed by contact with, or by mere
proximity to, a static charge. The result can be immediate destruction, early
failure of the device, or degradation of device performance.

To prevent static damage or destruction:

• Take adequate precautions when you handle or service equipment

that contains static-sensitive devices.

• Only attempt to service the circuitry in a static-sensitive device if you

are thoroughly familiar with industry-accepted techniques for handling
such devices.

022498-041 Revision B Page 12 of 46 Recon X Service Manual

• Always take adequate measures to prevent the buildup of static
charge on work surfaces and on persons handling the Recon X

Introduction

The Recon X is a rugged handheld computer that was designed for use in
surveying systems or as a stand-alone computing device. The Recon X was
redesigned with a new PCA, Display and Display seal. The new version of Recon
X now has a new part number prefix designation (RE5-XXXXXX) and also has a
different serial number prefix (DSXXXXXXXX). For more information on identifying
what model you have refer to _________
The Recon X also comes with a removable top cap assembly that allows access
to Compact Flash (Type I/II)
Unlike many Windows CE devices, the Recon X has no RAM-based file system.
All files are stored either in the Flash Memory or on an external CF/SD memory
card. This means that all stored data is maintained even if power is lost. The
Recon X (RE3) comes with WM5 installed but on the Recon X (RE5) WM6 is the
current operating system. An upgrade to WM6 is available for the Recon X
(RE3).

Turning the Recon X On/Off

To turn on the ReconX press the power key on the lower left side of the
keypad. If the handheld is on and the power key is pressed, the handheld
will go into suspend mode. Suspend mode is a low power mode that maintains
the contents of RAM while keeping the device in an inactive state.
To recover from suspend mode press power key again to turn on the
handheld.

Theory of Operation

Top Cap

Under the top cap there are two CF (Type I and II) slots.

To insert a CF card, gently insert the cards with the front of the card facing the
display side of the unit. Always push the card in straight, never force it or insert it
at an angle.

To remove a CF card it is recommended that a pull tab be installed on the card

for ease of removal.

Caution – Do not use the unit without reattaching the cap. The unit is
NOT sealed when the cap is off and water damage can occur and
will void the warranty.

Power Boot module

The Recon X battery contains the communication interface for the unit. Each
battery contains one RS-232 serial port, one USB type B and a power port.

NiMH Battery

The Recon X uses a NiMH battery pack that powers up the unit and is charged
using linear charging technology. The battery pack can be charged inside or
outside of the unit.

Battery Charging

The battery can be charged in the unit or out of the unit with an external battery
charger (accessory item). Connect the appropriate charger into the unit. The
unit will be fully charged in about 12 hours. A full charge is indicated by the

Introduction
This chapter explains how to properly disassemble and re-assemble the
Recon X. This product may also have other brand product. Make sure that
the Recon X is Trimble branded. Repair authorization is required to repair
Trimble products. If it is unclear what product you have, call Trimble
technical support and provide them with the serial number and part number
located on the label.

Identifying your Recon X

There are two way to identify Recon X, first by part number, secondly by serial
number. For serial number identification use the system information
contained in the operating system by going to Start / Settings / System /
System Information / Info. If the serial number starts with “DS” then your model
is an RE5 Recon X. Recon X may also be identified using the part number;
simply remove the battery and the part number prefix on the housing will
indicate whether the Recon X is an RE3 or RE5 version.

The new Recon X

(RE5) can be
identified by the
serial number prefix
(DSXXXXXX) and
also by the part
number prefix (RE5).

Interpreting Battery Logging Data

Data received from the Battery Logger can be very useful in determining power
problems. Figure 21 shows the results from a normal battery log using 50%
backlight power. High power devices such as the radios will consume more
power and shorten the operating time of the battery.
.
Note – Battery specifications are for 15 hours continuous run time with no radios
active.
