PNEUMATIC TECHNOLOGY
TUTORIAL 1

Topics: 1. Introduction to fluid power

2. Fundamental of fluid flow
3. Pump
4. Compressor
5. Valve

1. Please list out 6 (SIX) advantages of fluid power application compared to mechanical and
electrical power in industry.
2. Components in fluid power circuit is typically shown by symbols. Please state name and function
of the hydraulic and pneumatic components shown in Fig. T1.2

3. Kinematic viscosity of a hydraulic oil is 0.00005 m2/s. If it is flowing in a 30-mm diameter pipe at
a velocity of 8 m/s, what is the Reynolds number? Is the flow laminar or turbulent?

4. A simple hydraulic jack with input piston diameter of 25 mm and output piston diameter of 100
mm as shown in Fig T1.4 below is going to be used to lift a load of 1200 N. If the hydraulic jack is
applied to lift load of 1000 N in 30 cm high, determine input force required to lift the load and
input work required to lift the load.

5. Find suitable pump power if pressure available at the inlet of the hydraulic motor (station 2) of
hydraulic system in Fig T1.7 is 2.4 Mpa. The pump supply hydraulic fluid with specific gravity of 0.9
and kinematic viscosity is 90 cS at flow rate of 0.095 m3/min.

6. A steel tube of 25-mm ID has a burst pressure of 50 Mpa. If the tensile strength is 397 MPa, find
the minimum acceptable OD
7. A gear pump with 100-mm outside diameter, 62.5-mm inside diameter, and 25 mm width, is used
to pump 0.00183 m3/s of hydraulic oil at 1800 rpm. If the rated pressure is 70 bars and input prime
mover torque is 98.2 N.m, determine volumetric, mechanical and overall efficiencies of the pump.
8. Air is employed at a rate of 1.0 m3/min from a receiver at 40 °C and 1000 kPa gage. If the
atmospheric pressure is 101 kPa abs and the atmospheric temperature is 20 °C, how many
standard m3/min of free air must provided by the compressor?
9. Fluid power in hydraulic and pneumatic system is primarily controlled through devices called
“VALVES’. Based on the basic function, state and explain types of valves used in hydraulic and
pneumatic system.
10. A pneumatic system works at 2 bar of pressure. Determine poppet area of the pressure relief valve
installed if the spring with constant of 25 N/cm is employed to hold the poppets against its seat.
The adjustment mechanism then set so the spring initially compressed 0.2 cm from its free length
condition.
