Secretary’s Message

It’s hard to believe that this Leoistic year is almost

over and another great set of leaders are about to take
the baton. So, its high time to look back and reflect
on what we have accomplished as a club over the past
few months.
Together we were able to make a positive impact
on the community by conducting various service
and leadership projects. I’m happy that we not only
changed people’s lives, but we also made a group of
friends that could last a lifetime.
And one of the biggest lessons Leoism taught me was
that in life things never go according to a plan. If you
fall you have to get up and keep going and never give
up. It’s all about training your mind to see the positive
in any situation and to keep going.
I believe Leoism is the perfect platform to identify
your strengths and weaknesses and to make the best
out of them.
Behind the success of this year are a great set of Secretary- Leo Lumini
Leaders who put forward their time and effort for the Mudalige
betterment of the society. It was all possible because
of the excellent guidance of our club president Leo
Lakshitha Sandaruwan and the undeniable support
given by, Leo advisor Lion Noel Palliyaguru, senior
Leos, executive committee members, directors, Leos
and prospects throughout the year.
Finally, I would like to wish all the upcoming office
bearers a great year ahead. I hope you’ll have the
courage and strength to take the Leo Club of Sri Lan-
ka Technological Campus to greater heights.

Treasurer’s Message
As one great Leoistic year is coming to an end,
looking back and reflecting on the amazing
experiences, and memories created throughout this
year brings a smile to my face as I pen this message.

The many projects which were successfully

completed by the Leo Club of Sri Lanka
Technological Campus, helped to strengthen the
bond between each of the club members, while it
helped in the personal development of all us. Many
new members joined the club and helped in the
growth, expansion, and promotion of the club within
the campus community. As a member of the
executive committee of the Leo club, it brings me
immense happiness to witness the development of
the club and to be a part of this journey of success
experienced by the members of the club, while
gifting the society by engaging in communit Treasurer- Leo Kaveen

As a club, we are grateful for the support and

guidance by the Club President Leo Lakshitha
Sandaruwan and to all the past Leo members of the
club to make this Leoistic year successful.
Lastly, I would like to invite my fellow colleagues to
join with the Leo Club of Sri Lanka Technological
Campus, to challenge yourself, and to create lifelong
experiences and memories, while serving the
society. It transformed me as a person, and I am sure
it will do the same for you as well.

The Leo Times Magazine was a huge success for all the Leos of the Leo club of
Sri Lanka Technological Campus. Many individuals helped us get through the past Leoistic
year 2019/2020. We started the Leo Magazine in the sole hope of impacting lives
with the performance of our fellow Leos.
Nine editions were published in the last year and it was a huge success. All the events,
a diverse array of community service projects, and other occasions such as the Leo of
the month were published in our Leo Times Magazine. Many Leos got the opportunity to
showcase their creativeness and their interests by sharing their articles in the Leo Times
magazine. “Travel with Priya” is one such series of articles shared by
Leo Priyantha Kumara from the Leo club of Piliyandala and “Subavithaya” is
another series of articles shared by one of our own Leo members, Leo Udara Attanayaka.
All the editions of Leo Times magazines are now published on Scribd,
an open publishing platform since it is the world’s largest digital library where anyone
can access with ease. Within a short period after release, our latest magazines can

Empowering Women
Leo club of Sri Lanka Technological Campus

E mpowerment has become a widely used

word. ‘Empowerment’ in its emancipatory
meaning, is a serious word- one which
brings up the question of personal agency
rather than reliance on intermediaries, one
that links action to needs, and one that
results in making significant collective
change. It is also a concept that does not merely
concern personal identity but brings out a
broader analysis of human rights and social
justice.
Empowerment includes individual and
collective abilities that offer socio-political
space as well as access to and control of
different means. An analysis of the
empowerment process highlights the
way in which opportunities to seize
power can be used or overlooked as well
as the way in which they can change
the immediate or wider environment.
Women’s participation in decision making,
leadership and peace building is important
as right in itself. Women also bring
particular perspectives, priorities and
strengths resulting from their life
experiences, which are often different from
men’s. This means they are likely to make
different decision, with women responding
more strongly to women’s policy priorities.
Private sector businesses that have female
leaders to deliver stronger financial
performance.This shows the power of
women’ thoughts.

Reflection-20
The women at the negotiating table made a
difference, especially by promoting language
on the important provisions of meaningful
and inclusive participation. It is time for
women to be empowered. To know that
their voices count – and that they count.
We have to condemn all acts of violence,
establish equality in our work and home
lives, and change he everyday experience
of women and girls. There is an inescapable
truth – we cannot transform our world
unless the place of women within it is
transformed.

Women’s participation in decision making,

leadership, and peacebuilding is important
as right in itself. To improve and motivate
the future leading women, the Leos of Sri
Lanka Technological Campus organized a
workshop on the 25th of August from 9.00
am to 12.00 pm at Manapubudhu library,
Piliyandala. The Guest speaker for the
workshop was Mr. Douglas Siriwardana
who is a lawyer and a drama artist. Some
interesting games were organized as well

The number of people with diabetes has seen a
significant rise from 108 million to 422 million.
Anyone can be diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes
transcends age, gender, social status, caste or
race. There are many risk factors that can lead to
diabetes.Abnormal nutrition, physical inactivity
and stress are few of the cases for diabetes.
Awareness is the first step to any kind of change.
A Diabetes awareness campaign was held on the
14th of September in order to raise awareness
on how to control it, how to prevent it and what
must be done if you are a diabetes patient. This
was organized by the Leos of the Leo club of
SLTC, Leo club of Mattegoda and Leo club
of Kalubowila with the help of the Diabetes
Association of Sri Lanka. At Bellanwila
Rajamaha viharaya at 8.00am. The main
objective of this awareness campaign was to
educate the public about the deadly risks
of this non-infectious disease.

Protecting our mother Earth starts with you. When we recycle, used
materials are converted into new products, reducing the need to
consume natural resources. With the help of reusable things, we can
gain a profitable outcome which can be used for our daily life as well.
Therefore, in the journey of protecting our planet, the Leo club of
SLTC organized the RE competition from the 17th of August to 31st
of August in order to save our planet. The prime motive of the project
was to collect reusable materials and build a product and upload its
photos with a description to the Facebook event. The best products
and the products with highest likes and shares were awarded.

World Suicide
Prevention Day
Do you know that over 11 people die by
suicide, every day in Sri Lanka? A suicidal
person may not ask for help, but that doesn’t
mean that help isn’t wanted. People who
take their lives don’t really want to die but
they are in so much pain that they cannot
see any option than dying. If you think that
your friend is acting differently than usual,
acting really down, crying all the time for
no reason, suddenly not doing things they
used to love or doing things that’s not like
them. Well you might think that they are just
going through a hard time but they might be
really depressed, maybe even thinking about
killing themselves. Trust me it happens more
than you think and more than it should. Ask
straight out whether they are thinking about
killing themselves. It won’t hurt them in
fact, it helps. when people are thinking about
killing themselves, they want somebody
to ask, they want someone to listen, they
want someone to care. The best way is to
help by asking them. And if they say yes,
don’t joke around and don’t tell them that
they are being too dramatic. Please take any
suicidal talk or behaviour seriously. It’s
not just a warning sign that the person is
thinking about suicide but it’s a cry for
help. Show that you care, and get a doctor or
a psychologist involved and please act
before it’s too late.“A simple conversation can
be the difference between an end and a
beginning”

Hope
From early childhood, good health habits must
be practiced. The project ‘Hope’ was simply a
health awareness program to encourage the
children to practice healthy habits which are
important for personal hygiene. This project
was conducted on the 7th of November 2019
from 9.30 am to 11.30 am at Pitumpe primary
school, Padukka.

During the program, children were grouped

into 10 groups and they were taught health
ethics and etiquette. Later on, few fun
events were organized and winners were
awarded gifts. The project concluded with
a happy ending after presenting gifts to
all the children as well to the teachers.

Daham Dayada
T he major problem nowadays complained
by most of the parents and teachers is
that the younger generation is lacked in their
communication skills and performing
skills. They assume that it’s because of
modern technology such as the younger
generation is addicted to smartphones,
computer games, TV programs, etc As a
solution for that Leo Manodya Nabadawewa
,Director of Education Literacy organized
a program name Dhaham Dayada for
Sunday school students in the aim
of increasing their commnication and
performing skills with the help of Leo
Omantha Liyanaarachchi, Coordinator of
Education Literacy and Youth Empowerment
and Leo ThiharaMallikaratchy,Director of
Woman empowerment.
The First chapter was held for Sri
Vaidyarathana Sunday School in Pitumpe
Temple,Padukka on the 3rd of November.
The program throughout the day consists of
few fun activities, in the beginning, to
make them familiar to the environment
by dividing them into groups and then
at last an art competition and speaking
competition is held.

Reflection-37
The main goal of holding an art
competition and speaking competition
is to increase their creative skills and
thinking skills. And otherwise, it noticed
that most of the time the participation
of girls is less due to their shyness. But
due to programs conducted during the
workshop at the beginning, we noticed
that there is an increment of participation
of girls in the competition. This project
consists of 03 major parts such as the
workshop, speaking competition, and
the art competition. At the end of the
day, the first three places of these two
competitions are awarded. By that,
we were able to make two stable clubs
namely speaking club and art club
in the Sunday school with talented
students rise on that day who can take
part in future competitions. At last, we
were requested to do this program for
the Sunday schools in the whole region
of Padukka by the head monk of the
temple and the teachers’ board of the
Sunday school. This project is conducted
in series so that we meet in the next
chapter in a new place with a new phase.
