AC 2.1 Describe THREE stereotypes outlining positive and negative factors of each.

Stereotype 1:

All Asian people, particularly western Asian people, are good at maths for no apparent
reason

Positive factors:

This stereotype is positive as it makes a good name for Asian people in industries that might
involve maths to work in, and could help someone get a job they want

Negative factors:

This stereotype puts a lot of pressure on some Asian people and their families, a person
could get bullied if they don’t do well in a test. This stereotype also puts an unfair strain on
Asian people as they are expected to live up to this stereotype when in fact Asian people are
no exception to all other races, and that they have different strengths and weaknesses
varying by person and not ethnic group
Stereotype 2:

All African-Americans are good at athletics

Positive factors:

This stereotype can be positive as it can give a ‘placebo’ effect on an individual believing
that since they are of this race they have the inner ability to be good at it, giving them great
amounts of motivation and helping push themselves to the limit. This could also benefit
them in being picked for sports teams and they could have an advantage due to a coach
being influenced by this stereotype.

Negative factors:
The Negative factors of this stereotype is that it can put pressure on an African-American
person if they are unable to live up to this belief and could cause problems with them
understanding their identity, as they believe they should be good at athletics and if they
aren’t they could think they aren’t worthy of being part of their culture. This stereotype
focuses on a racial group rather than individuals
Stereotype 3:

All women are patient and more caring than all men

Positive factors:

This stereotype can give a woman confidence in her ability to handle situations that require
patience and allows people particularly children to feel comfortable around a woman in a
position where they might require comforting. It also may help a woman get a job due the
employer thinking they’ll be good with customers or children.

Negative factors:

This stereotype could put pressure on a woman not to show their frustrated side and let it
build up instead causing emotional distress. It may also help a woman with criminal intent to
convince someone to do something by making it seem they have good intent. It can also
make it hard for men to fit into that place too, making them seem like they can’t be as
naturally caring and patient as a women when they can be.
