1. When was the last time you went clothes shopping? Where did you go? Did you buy something or were you
just browsing? What did you buy?
2. Do you prefer to go shopping in department stores or to stroll around town, going into little boutiques?
3. Do always try clothes on in the fitting room to see if they fit and suit you, before you buy them?
4. Have you ever bought clothes online? What are the disadvantages of buying clothes online?
5. Do you ever buy expensive designer clothes? Do you think you have to spend money in order to look stylish
or do you think that designer clothes are overpriced and no better than high street brands?
6. Have you ever bought clothes from a second-hand store / charity shop?
7. Can you name some types of clothes that are fashionable at the moment?
8. What clothes do you usually buy in the winter? What clothes do you buy in the summer?
9. Do you like shopping in the sales or do you find it stressful? Why? What’s the best bargain you’ve ever got?
10. Have you ever worn something without removing the price tag and then returned it to the store to get
refund?

 Cut up the cards on Page 2.


 Photocopy handouts.

Step 1:
 To revise clothing vocabulary, put students into pairs/groups and tell them to make lists of clothing under the
following headings.
 accessories and jewellery
 clothes you wear on the upper body, neck and head
 clothes you wear on the lower body and feet
Step 2:

 Elicit vocabulary from the group and write on WB, adding any possible new vocabulary including….necklace,
bracelet, ring, scarf, tie, cap, blouse, shorts, tights, slippers, flip flops
Step 3:
 Draw a spider diagram on the board with the topic in the centre
 Elicit vocabulary related to ‘clothes shopping’ from the students.
Step 4:
 Elicit further vocabulary by asking the following question Clothes
Shopping
 Where do you go shopping for clothes?
Possible answers: shopping centre, department stores ,boutiques

 Can you give me any synonyms for fashionable?


Possible answers: trendy, stylish, in vogue

Step 4:
 Students complete the first exercise individually, matching the vocabulary to the definitions.
 Students compare their answers with a partner.
 Teacher goes through the answers, giving further examples for difficult vocabulary.
Step 5:
 Students ask and answer the questions in pairs or small groups. Teacher encourages them to repeat the new
vocabulary in their responses.

Step 6:

 Put students into small groups and give a set of cards to each group.
 Students take turns in picking a card and describing the word they see. Students must not show the other
students their card. They can (a) give a definition / synonym (b) give an antonym or (c) make a sentence omitting
the word.
 Demonstrate the activity before the students begin.
