1 Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, lies
Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary holding on
steadfast to its primal wilderness. Acting as
a buffer to the Nagarhole National Park,
Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and Bandipur
Tiger Reserve, particularly during the dry
spells when a number of wild Elephants
camp out here, the sanctuary is considered
as one of the bio-geographically richest
parts of Southern India.Though only the
outer corridor of the sanctuary is open to
visitors for exploration totalling about 25
kilometres, yet the Wayanad Sanctuary is
possibly one of the few places in India
where an astonishing variety of wild animals
and incredibly diverse flora can be found.
Through thickets of deciduous, semi-
deciduous and semi-evergreens trees, past
streaming Kakkayam river, lies the Protected
Area home to the Tiger, Sloth Bear, Deers
and of course, the majestic Elephants and
deadly King Cobra. There are a total of 44
different species of mammals and over a
hundred different types of birds inhabiting
the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, to say
nothing of the wide variety of reptiles,
fishes, amphibians, butterflies and
dragonflies that reside within the forest. The
sanctuary has quite a chequered history and
was home to a number of tribal families
before their displacement and consequent
rehabilitation within the Sanctuary of some.
The rehabilitated families live within the
Protected Area. Against the perfect
backdrop of hills set aglow by the fiery rising
morning sun, find your heart skip a beat at
the distant roar of a tiger, deers bounding
by and trumpet of a displeased Elephant.
2 Edakkal Caves

If art fascinates you, then you shouldn't miss
out on the
Eddakal caves in Kalpetta. This is a
prehistoric caves filled with numerous rock
wall paintings that continues to attract
historians and Archaeologists from all over
the world to this place. One can find at least
three sets of petroglyphs. Studies have
shown that the etchings are more than 5000
years old and the caves seem to have been
inhabited at various stages in history.
The caves are formed due to a fissure in the
rock. Legend says that the cave was formed
when an arrow released from the bow of
Lord Rama, struck this rock surface, creating
the fissure.
3 Thirunelli Temple
Mananthavady, Kalpetta, Wayanad,

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the history of the
temple dates back to 3000 years. Archives

and research have shown that Thirunelli
Temple was an important spiritual centre
during the reign of Bhaskara Ravi Varma, a
Chola king ( 962–1019 CE). It remained
largely inaccessible due to impassable
mountains and thick forest cover. Today, the
temple is also known as 'Sahyamala
Kshetram' or 'Kashi of the South'.
The temple has beautiful granite columns
which add an aesthetic appeal to the whole
architecture. A stream runs beside the
temple, which provides water for the temple
usage. The temple also has a pond, at the
centre of which is a stone slab with the
impression of Lord Vishnu's feet.
4 Lakkidi View Point
Lakkidi View Point, Kalpetta, Wayand,

Also termed as the gateway of Wayanad,
Lakkidi is located close to Vythiri. One of the
greenest and wettest places in India,
Lakkidi View Point boasts of incomparable
scenic beauty, high mountain slopes, dense
forests and cascading streams.

Lakkidi View Point
is on quite a high altitude which can be
dizzying for some. One can see a number of
hairpin curves on the snake-like roads
below. Choose a sunny day to travel up
here, as the mist might spoil the view.
Tourists come here especially to enjoy the
spectacular sunrise and sunsets. The drive
up to Lakkidi is half the fun!
5 Soochipara Falls

A gorgeous water body (one of the best in
the whole state of Kerala), the Sentinel rock
Soochipara Waterfall is a treat to the eyes.
The pool beneath the waterfall has facilities
for rafting, bathing and other recreational
water activities. You will find a number of
tree huts in the area, which provide amazing
views of the western ghats. There are a
number of springs and shallow pools of
water in the area.
The waterfall comprises of 3 stretches all of
which end up in the Chaliyar river. To reach
the falls u will have to go through a very
pretty trekking trail that runs through tea
gardens, rocky outcrops and dense forests.
