LESSON PLAN

THEME: LIVE AND LEARN; (Module 4, Unit 8, UPSTREAM ADVANCED)
TEACHER:
AIMS:
- to revise vocabulary related to education;
- to practise reading for specific information;
- to practise speaking skills – giving arguments to support point of view;

OPERATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the activity all students will:
 find at least 8/ 15 and 6/ 10words related to education; (Handout 1) (1.2)
 identify at least 50% of the information required (Handout 2); (2.1)
 bring at least three arguments to support a point of view on a given topic; (3.3)
FUNCTIONS:

- supporting arguments with examples;

LEAD IN - ORGANIZING THE CLASS:
- the teacher enters the classroom and greets the students;
- the teacher asks the students who is on duty and who is absent;
- the teacher prepares the materials for the class;
- the teacher checks the students’ homework;

PRESENTATION: the students are told what the new lesson is about and what they
are expected to do in class.

PRODUCTION:

ACTIVITY 1: WORD SEARCH (WARM UP) Time: 10’


AIM: to revise vocabulary related to education;
OPERATIONAL OBJECTIVE: Ss will find at least 14 words related to education;
(Handout 1); maximum target: 25.
PROCEDURE: The students are given two exercises to revise the vocabulary already
dealt with during previous classes;

ACTIVITY 2: READING COMPREHENSION Time: 15’


AIM: to practice reading comprehension – reading for specific information;
OBJECTIVE: students will identify at least 50% of the information required
(Handout 2);
PROCEDURE: the Ss are given a text about the British educational system; they are
asked to read the text in groups, trying to find in the text the information required by
exercises 2, 4 and 5 on the handout; the teacher checks the students’ reading
comprehension abilities;
INTERACTION: student – student; student – teacher; teacher – student;

ACTIVITY 3: LET’S WATCH A VIDEO! / SPEAKING Time: 30’


AIM: to practice speaking skills – giving arguments to support point of view;
OBJECTIVE: to bring at least three arguments to support a point of view on a given
topic;
PROCEDURE: the students watch a 5-minute video to identify the topic of the
conversation; they are asked what the video is about and what their opinion is, related
to the topic under debate; the Ss are organized into 4 groups; each group is given one
of the following topics:
- “Ideal School System”;
- “Ideal School Syllabus”;
- “Ideal System of Evaluation”;
- “Ideal Teacher”;
The groups are given 10 minutes to prepare a presentation about their topic in which
they are supposed to express their opinions on the topic and sustain them with
arguments and examples; after 10 minutes, the spokesperson for each group is asked
to take the floor and present their opinion on the topic; the rest of the class listen to
the presentation;
INTERACTION: student – student; student – teacher; teacher – student;
EVALUATION:
PROCEDURE: the students from the other teams ask questions about the topics
under debate and the opinions of their colleagues;
HOMEWORK: My Ideal School (opinion essay) – 250 words

FEED BACK: the teacher evaluates the students’ performance in class, laying
emphasis on the most interesting points of view and the most powerful arguments. -
