Identification of Significant
Hazards
Definitions
 Hazard: Source or situation with a potential
for harm in terms of injury or ill health,
damage to property, damage to the work
place environment, or a combination of these.
 Risk: Combination of likelihood and
consequence(s) of a specified hazardous
event occurring.

Evaluation of Risk

Criteria for Evaluation of Risk:

 Severity (S)
 Frequency (F)
 Probability (P)
Evaluation of Risk
Severity of Risk: S (1 To 5)
Bruise /Uneasiness /Irritation First aid Not required. 1
Injury needing first aid hospitalization and Some
disruption in work ( one day). 2
Injury needing Hospitalization and longer disruption in
work (>one day < seven days). 3
Deep cut / Injury / Fracture / serious illness / Complete
bed rest advised > seven days. 4
Permanent disability / loss of life 5
Evaluation of Risk
Frequency of Hazard: F (1 To 5)
Hazard taking place monthly to yearly. 1
Hazard taking place weekly to monthly. 2
Hazard taking place daily to weekly 3
Hazard taking place daily but not continuous 4
Hazard taking place continuously 5
Evaluation of Risk
Probability of Occurrence: P (1 To 5)

Low 2
Medium 3
High 4
Very High 5
Significance of Risk
Significant Risk:
 All Risk having score more than limit (36)
When determining controls, or considering changes to existing controls,
consideration shall be given to reducing the risks according to the
following hierarchy :
1) elimination
2) substitution
3) engineering controls
4) Sinage / warnings and / or administrative controls
5) personal protective equipment
 All risks related to Legal and other requirements
 All risks of Interested Parties Concern
 All hazards leads to emergency situation
 If feedback of 50% employees indicates the health
hazards

Identification of Significant
Environmental Aspects
Definitions
 Environmental Aspect: Element of an
organization’s activities or products or
services that can interact with the
environment

 Environmental Impact: Any change to the

environment, whether adverse or beneficial,
wholly or partially resulting from an
organization’s activities, products or services
ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS (4.3.1)

• Procedure
 To identify the environmental aspects of its
activities, products and services with in the
defined scope of the EMS that it can control and
those that it can influence taking into account
planned or new development, or new or modified
activities, products and services.
 To determine the significant environmental
aspects
• Keep the information up-to-date
• Consider them in setting Objectives and Targets
Identification of Environmental Aspects
Identify the aspects with in the defined scope for all:
 Processes
 Products
 Services

Consider the normal and abnormal operating

conditions and emergency conditions.

Collect quantitative and qualitative data on

characteristics of its Processes, products and
Services by input and output analysis of material or
energy.
