The graph presents information on how Australia and France produced electricity using
various fuels in 1980 and 2000.

Overall, Australia and France generated more energy in 2000 than in 1980 and France
surpassed Australia by 10 units in 2000.

Australia mainly used coal to produce electricity in 1980, 50 units were generated using such
(a) method. In France, 50 units of electricity were evenly generated by coal and natural gas,
which halved the amount of coal-generated ( adj) electricity in Australia. In 2000, over 70%
of electricity was produced by coal in Australia and it remained the most common way.
While in France, nuclear power was transformed into 126 units of electricity which were 111
units more than in 1980 and provided energy to (the) majority of electrical appliances in
France.

Nuclear power was not utilised for energy production in Australia in both 1980 and 2000,
unlike in France. While in France hydro power originally contributed the least of electricity
production, 5 units were produced in 1980. It was joined by natural gas in 2000 and both
produced 2 units respectively.

The pie charts compare the amount of electricity produced using five different
sources of fuel in two countries over two separate years.
Total electricity production increased dramatically from 1980 to 2000 in both
Australia and France. While the totals for both countries were similar, there were big
differences in the fuel sources used.
Coal was used to produce 50 of the total 100 units of electricity in Australia in 1980,
rising to 130 out of 170 units in 2000. By contrast, nuclear power became the most
important fuel source in France in 2000, producing almost 75% of the country’s
electricity.
Australia depended on hydro power for just under 25% of its electricity in both years,
but the amount of electricity produced using this type of power fell from 5 to only 2
units in France. Oil, on the other hand, remained a relatively important fuel source in
France, but its use declined in Australia. Both countries relied on natural gas for
electricity production significantly more in 1980 than in 2000.

Some people think that in the modern world we are more dependent on each
other, while others think that people have become more independent. Discuss
both views and give your own opinion.

Under the effect of globalisation and rapid technological development, whether or not
people can achieve everything by themselves or relying on each other more heavily than
ever has become a widely debated topic. Although there are good arguments in favour of
people become more distanced from each other, I believe their bonding are strengthened
across the globe.

There are two reasons why we are more independent. First, it can be due to the improved
technologies. People can use smartphones to order food, groceries and other daily supplies,
we no longer need to talk to the sales at various shops and communicate with other
customers as a result people’s ties are weakened. Secondly, education also promotes
people not to rely on others. Majority of the coursework in secondary school is done
individually. Public exams access one’s academic ability but not the ability of cooperating in
a group. As a result the population tends to accomplish jobs and tasks individually instead of
as a whole.

However, I agree that people are more dependent on each other these days due to
globalization. Despite the fact that we can shop independently using computer networks,
most of the products are shipped from the other side of the world. For instance about 80%
of apples are planted in China and are distributed to various locations. Connections and
product supplies from different parts of the globe are crucial to sustain the prosper lives
that people are enjoying at this moment. Besides no countries or people in the world are
completely isolated, not even in North Korea. Their government often requires economic
aids from the USA and China. This proves that even so-called isolated country, their
government and citizens still depend on the helps from others.

Technological devices deceive us to believe humans can live without others’ help, but they
together with the globalisation bring people even closer and that’s why I firmly believe
global citizens have a stronger tie than in the past.
