3. File>New Model>No
4. Select Custom Grid Spacing > Edit Grid > input grid data then Ok
5. Select Custom Story Data > Edit Story Data > input story data then Ok, Ok again
6. If you ever need to revise the grid or story data during modeling, go to Edit > Edit Story Data or Edit Grid Data
7. Options > Preferences > Concrete Frame Design > ACI 318-08
8. Define > Material Properties
9. Make sure CONC is highlighted then > Add new Material
10. Change Material name to compressive strength, ex. FC21, for convenience purposes
11. Adjust the material properties including the reinforcement properties
12. Define > Frame Sections
13. Delete all section properties, one will remain so that you will be able to delete after defining at least one
section
14. Add rectangle, use section name ex. G300x500, material FCXX, input depth and width
15. For beams: reinforcement > Select beam, input cover to center of reinforcement, Ok
16. Set modifiers > input 0.35 for Moment of Inertia about 2 axis and about 3 axis
This is due to the code requirements of utilizing only 35% of the section for
crack analysis.
17. For columns: reinforcement > select column, adjust reinforcement properties, select reinforcement to be
designed
18. Set modifiers > Input 0.70 for Moment of Inertia about 2 axis and about 3 axis
This is due to the code requirements of utilizing only 70% of the section for
crack analysis.
19. At the left window, make sure view is on plan and at correct floor (ex. Columns reflected on second floor are
columns below second floor or seen at first floor)
20. Click create column at regions and add section at desired grid intersection
21. Make sure angle for column is correct, this is critical for non-square/non-circular sections
22. Click draw lines and add beams at desired locations. Ensure that beams are either drawn from left to right,
bottom to top.
23. Define > Wall / Slab / Deck Section > Add New Slab
24. Change material to FCXX. Adjust membrane and bending thickness to the slab thickness. Choose Shell
25. Check the Use Special One-Way Load Distribution option if slab is one-way (Ratio of S/L < 0.5)
26. Go to Plan View, click Draw Rectangular Area, Draw Slab at desired locations
27. If one way slab is drawn, make sure local axis is correct
28. Select the 3-D view, then press Ctrl+A to select all, then Assign > Shell / Area > Diaphragms, choose D1 (This
is default rigid diaphragm)
29. Define > Wall / Slab / Deck Sections > Add New Wall
30. Change Material to FCXX, Adjust membrane and bending thickness to the wall thickness, choose shell)
31. Set Modifier M11, M22, M12 to 0.35
32. Go to plan view, Click Draw Walls, draw shear walls at desired locations
33. Select beams, Assign > Frame/Line > Frame Release/Partial Fixity > Check M! and M2 for start or end
depending where a beam connection is (not connected to a column)
34. Go to the Base plan view and select all nodes, then Assign > Joint / Point > Restraints > Assign fixed or pinned
depending on support designed/assumed
35. Select the 3-D view, then press Ctrl+A to select all, then Assign > Shell / Area > Area Object Mesh Options
36. Select Auto Mesh Object into Structural Elements, then further subdivide auto mesh with maximum element
size of 1m
