All aircraft throughout the world, whatever their manufacturer, civil or military, operate at 400 Hz 115-200V.
This frequency was chosen to reduce the space requirements and weight of electrical equipment (mainly
magnetic materials) on board the plane.
Certain aircraft such as small passenger planes (e.g.:ATR42 & 72) and helicopters also require 48V direct
current.
What are the 400 Hz power supply requirements for an aircraft?
q In flight, civil or military aircraft use their own generator to supply all of the utilities with electrical power
(pumps, undercarriage, air conditioning, rollers, etc).
q On the ground:
§ supply of cabin and cockpit equipment,
§ supply of lighting, ventilation, plugs for aircraft cleaning,
§ supply of refrigerators,
§ supply of the hold system, of the conveyor system for luggage in the hold,
§ supply of flap maneuvering systems, servo-brakes, transfer pumps,
§ undercarriage testing (simulation),
§ APU start-up.

400Hz Airport
Definition of ground support power supply requirements
q The choice of architectures also depends on the airport infrastructure and configuration (cable
connection length, marine atmosphere, etc).
It can also depend on the type of aircraft traffic.

Advantages drawbacks
§ Adjusting the converter power to the aircraft plug power. § Costly solution: requires a greater number of converters
90kVA simple plug compared with a centralized solution (1 converter per aircraft
120kVA double plug plug).
§ In the case of a converter failure (risk x4), setting up a
GPU.
§ Simplicity of the installation
§ No 400 Hz network. Distribution up to the bridges uses § Restrictive maintenance program: bridges or ground
50Hz LV cables. support plugs are shut down one after the other for 400 Hz
converter maintenance.
§ Changing the converter takes half a day (bridge out of use).
§ This solution can be mixed (decentralized for the terminal, § Implementation of a large network of LV 50Hz high
semi-centralized for the ground support plugs). section cables.
§ Shared maintenance equipment for repair of bridges § High maintenance costs: a lot of converters and a lot
more maintenance points.
§ Regulating the 400 Hz as near as possible to the aircraft § Maintenance work in high risk areas: on the apron.
plug (only 1 times 90kVA)
§ In the case of a converter failure, the 400 Hz station is
no longer available (compared with a centralized solution).
§ Exposure of converters: the equipment is installed
outdoors, subject to climatic variations (freezing, high heat
from the runway, rain, etc), to atmospheric pollution (dust,
aircraft exhaust gases, lorries, etc)

For the semi-centralized and decentralized architectures, power supply of the 400 Hz converter can
be provided by a 50-60 Hz LV network
All of the functions above are supplied by Schneider Electric and described in the
appended document.
Certain specific devices are purchased from suppliers identified the following
