400Hz_HB1_EN_V1_juin 03
400Hz Airport
General

Why are aircraft supplied power at 400 Hz?

All aircraft throughout the world, whatever their manufacturer, civil or military, operate at 400 Hz 115-200V.
This frequency was chosen to reduce the space requirements and weight of electrical equipment (mainly
magnetic materials) on board the plane.
Certain aircraft such as small passenger planes (e.g.:ATR42 & 72) and helicopters also require 48V direct
current.
What are the 400 Hz power supply requirements for an aircraft?

q In flight, civil or military aircraft use their own generator to supply all of the utilities with electrical power
(pumps, undercarriage, air conditioning, rollers, etc).

q On the ground:
§ supply of cabin and cockpit equipment,
§ supply of lighting, ventilation, plugs for aircraft cleaning,
§ supply of refrigerators,
§ supply of the hold system, of the conveyor system for luggage in the hold,
§ supply of flap maneuvering systems, servo-brakes, transfer pumps,
§ undercarriage testing (simulation),
§ APU start-up.

400 Hz plug connection procedure

q Landing:
§ aircraft lands on the runway
§ APU starts up (Auxiliary Power Unit)*
§ the aircraft docks at a bridge stand or parks at a remote stand
§ 400 Hz plug connected
§ APU stopped (apart from short stopovers)
q Take-off:
§ APU starts up
§ 400 Hz plug disconnected
§ jets started
§ APU stopped
§ aircraft takes off.
*N.B.: certain smaller aircraft do not have an APU. It is the jet engines that continue to work to supply the power.

What production resources are used for a 400 Hz power supply?

2 solutions:
q The aircraft produces the electrical power witth its APU (major atmospheric and noise pollution)
q An external system provides the necessary power:
- The commonest system is called GPU (Ground Power Unit), which is a combustion engine driving a
400 Hz alternator. This mobile unit solution is also polluting and only slightly less noisy than the APU. It
also is an obstacle and is therefore a potential accident hazard when maneuvering aircraft. The GPU is
generally owned by airline companies.

- A fixed electrical power network operated by the airport authority.

For reasons of safety and protection of the environment (uncluttering stand areas, risk of explosion, noise,
exhaust gases) the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Authority) encourages airports to install fixed
electrical power networks.

General

How is the aircraft's IT equipment supplied power?

In flight and on the ground, the 400 Hz supply is rectified to give a direct current power supply (rectifier unit
+ batteries).

Where are the aircraft 400 Hz plugs located?

§ At bridge stands,
§ At remote stands (passengers bussed to and from the aircraft)
§ In maintenance hangars,
§ In aircraft production plants (for functional testing),

What technologies allow production of 400 Hz power?

q Conventional technology uses rotary sets.
q In the past fifteen years static converter technology has appeared.

Static converter Rotary converter

Definition of ground support power supply requirements
Power supply voltage
The 400 Hz frequency is supplied to the aircraft via a 115/200V+ PEN plug (protection conductor and
neutral connected to the aircraft body).
Devices in the aircraft basically use 115 V single phase voltage with a tolerance of ±3V between phases
and PEN (see standard EN2282).
Compliance with this tolerance is fundamental, since outside of this voltage range the aircraft will
automatically disconnect from the 400 Hz supply.
Neutral earthing system: TNC (earth and neutral combined)

Distribution network architectures

§ Centralized: certain equipment grouped together in an airport facility (MV distribution)

§ Semi-centralized: equipment located at several airport locations (LV distribution).

§ Decentralized: converters mounted under the bridge (LV distribution).

q The choice of architectures also depends on the airport infrastructure and configuration (cable
connection length, marine atmosphere, etc).
It can also depend on the type of aircraft traffic.

Advantages Drawbacks
§ Reduction of installed power due to clustering: § A shared mode problem (e.g.: short-circuit on the MV 400
