Practical Horoscope Analysis: Case

Understanding theory in Jyotish is not enough. We have to keep

on applying them in hundreds of chart, understand when certain
things don’t work, the finer points of analysis etc. In this regards, I
have started this new series to analyse horoscopes of real life
people, but limiting myself to only the key points. It is important
that we understand the high level theme of the horoscope, before
diving deep. Else, we may end up in a wrong place and the deeper
analysis could be misleading. If we predict when the owner of a
horoscope will become pregnant, off-course, the answer can be
misleading, if the horoscope turns out to be that of a male. So the
right approach is from broader to deeper analysis. Like in art, only
after the broader strokes are finished, one resorts to the detailed
strokes.

To start with, I have started with the cases presented by revered

Dr. BV Raman in his book Hindu Predictive Astrology.

Key Points

 Humble beginning? Lagna = circumstances at birth. Humble

beginning = some weakness in the Lagna. Lagna has Gulika,
Lagna aspected by Rahu. Navamsa Lagna has neecha Mangal.

 What made him great, irrespective of the humble beginning?

Look at the strength of the Lagnesha, Dharma Bhava and the
Kendra. Lagnesha is Mangal conjoined with Uccha Chandra
and Shani. Shani is in Aarohini condition. Chandra’s
conjunction giving strength to both Mangal and Shani.
Chandra has low Paksha bala, indicating that it was not able to
sustain the rise forever, causing a fall at the end.
 The Adhi yoga from the Lagna is important for the rise. This
involves all the four benefics Chandra, Shukra, Guru and
Budha.

 Why revolutionary? Life’s path is seen from the Lagnesha.

Lagnesha Mangal = aggression, revolution, violence. Conjoined
with Chandra = Strong influence of Mangal on Chandra.
Conjoined with Shani = Iron hand, persistence. Shani in strong
in friendly sign and conjoined with Uccha Chandra. Shani is
also vargottama, indicating strong influence of Shani on this
life. Perhaps, Shani is the life defining planets in the horoscope.
Shani is also in Dikbala. Mangal occupying Navamsa Lagna as
well, indicating strong influence of Mangal on this person’s life.

 Leadership qualities? Ability to influence is 5th house. 5th

lord Guru is in the 8th house = secret activities, conjoined with
Shukra, 7th lord = opposition, and 12th lord = Change of
current scheme of things. Ability to Rule is 10th house. 10th
Lord Surya in 9th house but conjoined 8th lord, Rajayoga is
broken, causing his eventual fall. 10th lord in the 9th house =
yoga for rise in life. Surya occupy Mangal’s Navamsa, friendly
sign, hence good. But Scorpio indicate revolution,
transformation.

 From Chandra, 10th lord is Shani, occupying Chandra Lagna.

It is Vargottama, confirming his rise and attaining a high
leadership position. From Chandra 5th lord is Budha conjoined
with 4th lord, hence a very good yoga for leading through
scholarship and knowledge, charismatic leadership.

 Violent end? Rahu in the 3rd house from the Arusha Lagna
and aspected by Mangal and Shani by Rasi drsti.

 Father died in the 2nd year

Key points:

 Early demise of father? Karaka Surya with enemy Shukra and

a fiery Mangal in the 12th house (loss). Surya is also aspected
by Vakri Shani from the 6th house indicating injuries. Surya is
strong due to Vargottama, but afflicted in the Navamsa due to
conjunction with Rahu (eclipse). The vargottama is happening
in the 12th house of loss.

 9th house is occupied in the Rasi chart and the Navamsa,

Meena is also unoccupied. Hence need to look at the 9th lord.
9th lord Guru is exalted but conjoined with 12th and 3rd lord
Budha. Guru is aspecting the 9th house, so, should have
protected the father. Why it didn’t? The situation gets clearer in
the Navamsa. Guru is conjoined with Neecha Chandra, Vakri
Shani and Budha. From the 9th house (in Meena), Shani is the
12th lord (loss), Budha is the 7th lord (Maraka) and Chandra is
the 5th lord (good) but neecha indicating loss of life.

 Father died in the 2nd year? He was born in Shukra Dasa 2

years remaining. The father’s death could have happened in the
fag end of Shukra Dasa. End of the Dasa periods exposes the
weaknesses in a horoscope. Shukra is a Rudra graha for the 9th
house (in Meena), and enemy of Surya. And in the Navamsa,
Shukra is occupying the 3rd (secondary Rudra, 8th from 8th
 and 2nd from 2nd) house from Meena. The Antar could have
been Ketu. Ketu is to give the results of Mangal (since its in
Vrschika). Mangal afflicting Surya (even though a friend of
Surya). Why? Because Mangal is occupying the 8th house
(Rudra Sthana) from Surya. Note that occupation of Surya,
Mangal and Rahu in the 8th or the 3rd house (from a Bhava or
Karaka) can cause great danger to the life. Ketu is occupying
the 6th from Surya (indicating some injuries) and in the
Navamsa, Ketu is occupying a Maraka sthana from Surya (7th
house). From the Dasa lord Ketu is occupying the 6th in Rasi
and 8th in the Navamsa, indicating some misfortune during
this Dasa-Bhukti.

 Rise in life? The Lagnesha, Dharmesha and the Kendra

should be strong in the first place, so that the person has
stamina, good luck and the support in life. Lagnesha is
Chandra occupying a friendly sign Simha, but neecha Navamsa
(indicating severe loss in life and great pain). The debility is
cancelled in the Navamsa because of placement of Shukra in a
Kendra to Chandra in Navamsa and also Mangal occupying the
Navamsa Lagna. 9th lord having caused trouble to the father,
due to its inauspicious conjunctions, is nevertheless strong and
aspecting the 9th house. Hence, after causing pain, it is going
to give rise in life and good luck to the native. If the
auspiciousness has saved the father, then the native’s luck
would have been adversely affected.

 Two strong benefics Budha and Guru occupy the Lagna

Kendra which other Kendras are unoccupied. This indicate
great support coming from these two grahas. In the Navamsa,
the 7th Kendra (from Janma Lagna) is occupied by Uccha
Mangal, giving him tremendous fighting power.

 Two wives? Shukra is afflicted due to conjunction with 2

malefics Surya-Mangal, occupying the house of loss (12th
house). In the Navamsa Shukra is well placed in Vrsha Rasi in a
 Trikona from the Navamsa Lagna, indicating some good luck
after initial trouble, in the matters of marriage. The 7th lord
Shani occupying 6th house in retrogression, indicating great
suffering (6th house) and sorrow (Shani) in the matters of
relationships (7th lord). In the Navamsa, 7th (from Janma
lagna) is occupied by Mangal, indicating sorrow in marriage,
although it is Uccha (Ref: Sri Rama’s case, where Uccha
Mangal in the 7th house gave too much suffering in the
marriage matters).

 Loss of sisters? Sisters are also governed by Shukra. The loss

is signified by the same affliction to Shukra. In addition, the
3rd lord Budha, although strong in the Rasi, is afflicted in the
Navamsa by Neecha Chandra and Vakri Shani.

This is the 3rd Horoscope given by Dr. BV Raman in Hindu
Predictive Astrology. Based on the time he gave, the Lagna is
coming to Mithuna, but he says that it should be Vrshabha. The
Birth time is corrected to bring the Lagna to Vrshabha. The
Navamsa lagna is however questionable. This horoscope belongs
to American President Herbert Hoober.

Key points:

 Akin to a King? Shukra is the Lagna lord, occupying the 5th

house with natural benefic Guru. This gives considerable
strength to the Lagnesha in the Rasi chart. In the Navamsa
chart, the Lagnesha is exalted in the 11th house (Tulya),
conjunct with Guru and also the Navamsa Lagna. Guru is a
functional malefic for Taurus Lagna indicating the struggles
that he has to pass through in life. He was the President during
the great depression. Shukra although debilitated, its cancelled
due to its dispositor conjoined with Chandra (Kendra to
Chandra). In addition, Shukra is uccha in Navamsa. When a
Neecha is cancelled and the graha is involved in some good
yogas, it can give great strength to fight all the odds. This shows
his persistence.

 There is Amavasya yoga in the Rasi chart due to the Surya-

Chandra conjunction, also afflicting Budha and Mangal, in the
 3rd house. The malefic influences on the 3rd house gave him
great enterprise to push ahead. Some issues are expected in the
matters of Budha and Mangal due to conjunction in the
Amavasya yoga. This can be studied later.

 The strength of Surya and Chandra is a must for getting royal

power. Chandra is debilitated in the Navamsa, but it conjoins
with Mangal indicating strong influence of Mangal on his
mind. Mangal = great energy level. Scorpio = secret things.
Chandra’s debility is cancelled by Mangal who is placed with
the Chandra. In addition, Shukra, moon’s exaltation sign lord is
occupying Navamsa Lagna (Navamsa Lagna is questionable).

 President of a country? The throne is in the 10th house,

which must be fortified, in addition to the 9th house (luck). 9th
lord Shani is retrograde in own sign. In the Navamsa, Shani
occupy a friendly Navamsa but conjunct with Rahu indicating
some grave danger that he had to overcome. 10th lord is again
Shani occupying the 9th house causing a good yoga. There are
some other Kendra Kona Rajayoga, but they are secondary,
compared to Shani.

 Humane and tactful? Guru conjoined the Lagnesha in a

Shubha Rasi both in Rasi and Navamsa made him highly
benevolent, broad minded, having a great heart. In addition, in
both Rasi and Navamsa, the 5th house is well occupied by
Lagnesha Shukra, Guru and Budha (Tulya). 5th house = what
prevails in your mind.

 Overall the grahas which supported him to be in power are

Shukra, Guru, Shani and Rahu. Among the Luminaries,
Chandra is the one who supported his rise. Surya occupying
Shani’s Rasi in Kumbha has been rendered somewhat weak
compared to Chandra. For timing, the Dasa-Bhukti, and
Gochara on these planets should be checked.
 In the Vaisheshikamsa, Mangal is in Simhasanamsa, Guru
and Shani are in Gopuramsa.

Key points:

 Vrshabha Lagna with Uccha Chandra, good influences on the

Lagna. Chandra is also strong in Paksha Bala as its located far
from Surya.

 Lagna is hemmed between Ketu and Gulika, indicating

troubles through accidents, poison etc.

 LAgnesha is Shukra in the 7th house in Vrschika, the sign of

secrets and hidden things. But it is conjoined with Budha.
Hence, it is under benefic influence. However, it is under
serious trouble as it is hemmed between Mangal, Rahu and
Surya.

 Eclipse combination in the 6th house affecting the Lagna

lord. This indicates some serious health troubles. The eclipse
combination is aspected by Shani, which made is deadly.
Aspects or conjunctions of 3 malefics on any house can be
deadly. 6th house = injuries, pathogenic diseases.

 Shukra however, is occupying a vargottama position, giving it

strength.
 Kendra is quite strong with Chandra, Budha, Shukra and
Guru occupying it. Although Shani occupies the 4th house, it is
not negative, due to influence of Guru, and the Rasi lord Surya.

 Mangal in the 8th house indicating grave trouble. Mangal,

Surya, Rahu or Ketu in the 8th house can pose big threat to
one’s wellbeing. This is heightened due to weakness of the
Lagnesha Shukra due to Papakartari.

 In the Amsa Tulya Rasi, Shani is occupying the 8th house,

which gives chronic diseases. But guru in the 6th house protect.
But the troubles are far higher than the protection.

 She suffered due to smallpox in the 8th year. Counting 1 year

per sign as per sudarshana chakra method, this falls in the 8th
house containing Mangal (and Shani based on Amsa Tulya
Rasi). This coincided with Rahu-Guru period. Guru is giving
the results of Mangal, being its dispositor, and due to its
conjunction with Shani, also giving Shani’s results. This got
triggered with the start of the Rahu’s period, as Rahu is one
who is causing affliction to the Lagna lord, being in the 6th
with Neecha Surya. Rahu is closely placed with Surya, in the
same nakshatra pada. Rahu and Surya occupying Kumbha
Navamsa, indicating no escape from the trouble.

 During this time, Shani was transiting in Vrschika Rasi and

Tula Navamsa. From the Tula Navamsa, it triggered the Aditya-
Chandala yoga in Tula Rasi. And Shani triggered Surkra
occupying Vrschika Navamsa. At that time Rahu was transiting
Vrsha Rasi — Kanya Navamsa. It put stress on the Lagna and
Chandra Lagna. From Kanya Navamsa also, it put huge stress
on the Janma Lagna and Rasi, being in Trine to them. It
afflicted Budha in Navamsa, indicating skin troubles. Multiple
factors went against her health causing a serious diseases such
as Smallpox, which can be fatal.
 The Dropsy (oedema = water retention) is caused by
affliction to the watery element. In this horoscope, it is due to
affliction on the Lagnesha Shukra, occupying a Krura watery
sign, Vrschika and hemmed between papa-grahas.
