Lesson aims:

1. Topics: by the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to answer multiple-choice questions and write notices.
2. Reading skills: reading short messages and answering multiple-choice questions, identifying parallel
expressions;

Materials:
“Insight into PET with answers”; CD.

Preparation: before the class starts, the teacher opens the windows, makes light in the classroom, arranges
all the pupils’ chairs/ desks in semi-circle, makes sure the CD player works and all the tracks are in order,
writes all the pupils’ names on the board and places all the necessary materials on the desk.

Target language:

 Key language: different words, same meaning.


 Revised language: parallel expressions, transformation dialogue.

ACTIVITY 1 (SB 6, Reading, Activity 1): Identifying hidden meanings

Aim: Reading for gist.


Procedure:
1. The T asks students to open their books by saying: “Open your book at page 6, please”.
2. The teacher explains to Ss that they are to quickly read through the text, setting a limit of 2 minutes for
doing it, and check for unknown words and expressions.
3. The teacher explains to the pupils that they are to connect labels and notices a-g with the given headings,
emphasising the fact that they are to carefully look for parallel expressions and hidden meanings, as there is
unlikely for them to find the exact same words in the text.
4. The Ss are to check their answer with the class, and come up with further details and arguments.
Interaction: The teacher encourages students to argument their opinion, and even starts a debate meant to
involve the entire group of students.
Timing: 5 minutes

ACTIVITY 2 (SB 6, Reading, Activity 2) Read and answer

Aim: Identifying text purposes and parallel expressions.


Procedure:
1. The teacher asks Ss to open their books by saying: “Open your Student’s Book at page 6, please” .
2. The teacher explains to Ss that they are to quickly read through the text, setting a limit of 2 minutes for
doing it, and check for unknown words and expressions.
3. The teacher explains to the pupils that they are to complete the second sentence so that it has the exact
same meaning as the first one, emphasising the fact that they are two use only one or two words.
4. The Ss are to check their answer with the class, and come up with further details and arguments.
5. The teacher checks understanding of the text with the class; they translate some of the sentences for them
to become acquainted with this method.
Interaction: The teacher checks understanding of the text with the class.
Timing: 7 minutes

ACTIVITY 3 (SB 7, Reading, Activity 3) Read and identify

Aim: Reading for gist; identifying text purpose.

Procedure:
1. The teacher asks Ss to open their books by saying: “Open your Student’s Book at page 7, please”.
2. The teacher explains to Ss that they are to quickly read through the given texts, setting a limit of 3
minutes for doing it, and check for unknown words and expressions.
3. The teacher explains to the pupils that they are to identify the type of text and its purpose, and then
choose the correct answer for each question.
4. Ss take turns in providing the answers, checking them with the class, and correcting them if necessary.
Interaction: The teacher checks understanding of the text with the class.
Timing: 8 minutes

ACTIVITY 4 (SB 7, Reading, Activity 4) Read and answer

Aim: Reading for gist and writing notices


Procedure:
1. The teacher asks Ss to open their books by saying: “Open your Student’s Book at page 7, please”.
2. The teacher explains to Ss that they are to quickly read through the given texts, setting a limit of 3
minutes for doing it, and check for unknown words and expressions.
3. The teacher explains to the pupils that they are to work in pairs in order to write the messages and notices
which correspond to the given texts.
4. Ss take turns in providing the answers, checking them with the class, and correcting them if necessary.
Interaction: The teacher encourages students to argument their opinion, and even starts a debate meant to
involve the entire group of students.
Timing: 10 minutes

ACTIVITY 5 (SB 92, Reading, Activity 1) Read and answer

Aim: Reading for gist and writing notices


Procedure:
1. The teacher asks Ss to open their books by saying: “Open your Student’s Book at page 92, please”.
2. The teacher explains to Ss that they are to quickly asses the given signs and then decide upon their
meaning and where they might see them, emphasising the fact that they should argument their opinion, as
there are no wrong answers.
3. Ss take turns in providing the answers, checking them with the class, and further discussing them.
Interaction: The teacher encourages students to argument their opinion, and even starts a debate meant to
involve the entire group of students.
Timing: 6 minutes

ACTIVITY 6 (SB 92, Reading, Activity 2) Read and answer

Aim: Reading for gist and writing notices


Procedure:
1. The teacher asks Ss to open their books by saying: “Open your Student’s Book at page 92, please”.
2. The teacher explains to Ss that they are to quickly read through the given texts, setting a limit of 2
minutes for doing it, and check for unknown words and expressions.
3. The teacher explains to the pupils that they are to put the words in the correct order in order to make a
notice or label.
4. Ss take turns in providing the answers, checking them with the class, and correcting them if necessary.
Interaction: Asking pupils at random for the answer in order to keep them focused and be ready to actively
participate in this activity.
Timing: 4 minutes

ACTIVITY 7 – Ending the lesson

Aim: Further practicing words and vocabulary


Procedure:
1. The teacher asks Ss to open their vocabulary lists and further practice the second half of the ‘L words’
section, insisting upon their meaning and spelling.
2. The T asks Ss to write and translate the ‘E words’ section on their notebooks, five times in a row.
(Homework)
3. The T informs Ss that next time they will be enhancing their listening skills concerning short messages
and parallel meanings, as they will have an authentic past PET paper from Cambridge ESOL – Listening.
Interaction: Asking pupils at random for the answer in order to keep them focused and be ready to actively
participate in this activity.
Timing: 10 minutes
