Basic knowledge

Used to + the base form of the verb in all persons means that something often happened
in the past, but does not happen any longer at the time of speaking. It is also used to
describe a past habit:

I used to play tennis when I was young.


(but I don't play tennis now).

The negative form is generally: never used to + the base form of the verb.

He never used to drink beer.


(He was not in the habit of drinking beer).

Questions are formed with did + subject + use to + base form of the verb:

Did he use to sing?

Do not mix up sentences with used to and those with be used to + the -ing form of the
verb, in which used is an adjective that means 'accustomed to doing something':

John is used to working hard.

We can't use used to with a precisely defined period of time:

I used to go to school in Canterbury when I was a boy.

in comparison to:

I went to school in Canterbury for six years.

We can use would to describe past habits (written English):

Every Saturday, he would go fishing.
