Introduction
In our country, many people including public workers, students of different institutions, they
use private and public transport to move from their homes to their destination. Some of them
prefer public transport than using private, and this choice is related to the cost of each type of
transport. With the need of good understanding about the advantages and disadvantages of the
two type of transports, it is developed the present work.

This work will be based on the experience that workers, students and common people in their
daily routine. A part of that, it will also be necessary to analyse the way the people use the
means if transport in our country.

1. The transports in Mozambique

The increasing of population and circulation of vehicles in our country as resulted in lack of
transport, then, many people have been in queue for several times, trying to get a transport to
go to their homes. It is known that the system of transport in Mozambique is very bad, and
also the roads are not in good conditions. The lack of transport and the bad conditions that
those transports show, they have been forcing other people to get their particular cars, and
others to see private transport as solution of their needs.

To increase mobility and accessibility in rural urban transport the government is

implementing policies and strategies to reduce the lack of passenger transport and for the
transportation of goods. Therefore, a project for massive use of bikes and motorcycles is
under implementation.

The government is creating conditions for the strengthening of transportation capacity with
the purchase of more buses, ferry boats and fast trains for public transport, standardizing the
models and makes that must adapt themselves into local conditions (in terms of simplified
mechanical operation). The other challenger is the responsibilities of all road, rail and water
public and private transportation companies for them to participate in the integrated system of
urban passenger transport.

2. The safety aspects e increasing fuel price in public transport

Safety is an aspect of the system as a whole – therefore a systemic approach to managing
safety needs to be taken. Daily, thousands of people use public transport to travel to their
daily activities, then an adequate public transport ensures that the population makes good use
of public transport devices, reduces their daily expenses and moves safety.

The lack of security in public transport is a reality that afflicts many cities in our country.
Thieves and robberies are recorded every day in the country, and the victims are mostly
students, public workers.

With the increasing of the fuel price in the country, the public transports have also increased
the prices charged by the drivers and the passengers are the ones that suffer on it. Poor people

are those considered more easily victims of it. However, environmental pollution is also
another very important factor to promote public transport.

3. Public transport
The public transport means are those managed by public companies, or private and therefore
do not belong to users. In Mozambique, the government manage this means of transport or
grant concessions to other companies to take care of the service, so that the citizens can enjoy
it. The use of public transportation in our country, it reduces the use of personal vehicles
which leads to economic factors of the road use.

4. Disadvantages of public transportation

Public transports still face great challenge to solve the need of the many passengers, such as
public workers, students, and business people. Aspects such as punctuality, short waiting
time, and low frequency of the vehicles are also considered other obstacles of the public
transportation services. Thus, the buses are still running despite the fact that they lack
security, safety, and comfort aspects. The bad service of the public transportation is caused
by:

 Passengers stay several times in the queue, waiting for the buses;
 The buses have lack of comfort and safety;
 Force the number of passengers, in which the buses usually overloaded, and in this
period that the world and Mozambique is not any exception, people run serious risk to
infected by the corona virus, as the buses are always over located;
 Low of route consistency. Some of the vehicles do not finish their route, and as the
consequence, force the passengers to get off in the place that they did not wish to stay,
then, they have to spend more than necessary money;
 Lack of orderly behaviours of the drivers; some of them neglects such crucial aspects
as safety, security, and comfort;
 The buses drivers do not obey the rules on the road, they always go fast because they
are busy to get more money to present to the transport owners;
 Many buses drives, they play the music in the buses in loud volume, and that disturbs
the passengers.
6

 Waste of time;
 Time uncertainty;
 Long waiting times.

5. Advantages of public transportations

The collective passenger transport, technical term for what is commonly called “public
transport”, since a bus is also public transport, they have the following advantages:

 They help to reduce road traffic, as they occupy much less space per passenger – km
transported. The ability that certain means of transport have to flow passengers. It is
noticed that public transport can flow passengers much more efficiently than the
private car;
 They occupy less space on the road per passengers – km, its massive use allows to
allocate public space, not for highway and tar, but for more green spaces, public
squares and other leisure spaces, or even built for housing;
 They are more energy efficient, as they help the economy of our country, once it
depends on oil, considering that most automobiles still run on oil products, our
country has trade deficits in oil products, thus reducing dependence energy.

6. Advantages of private transportations

Transport, also known as private transport, comprises the mode of travel in which passengers
may or not be owners of the vehicle to be used for the transport. However, individual
transport is the counterpoint to collective transport, which has the capacity to move a larger
number of people, occupying a similar space in the individual transport road. The individual
transport is intended for the displacement of a single individual, although there may be the
possibility of carrying more than one passenger in certain vehicles.

Having a private vehicle sometimes means to save time waiting for the next bus or train to
come to the bus station. There is no need to wait to for other people to get off at the stops.
Having your only car also means you get do whatever you want with it. For many advantages
that we can find here, they can selected as the following:

 Freedom/independence;
7

 Ability to go where the one want;

 Convenience;
 Rapidity;
 Comfort;
 Flexibility;
 Know what the one can expect;
 Safety;
 Having own private space;
 Listen to music.

7. The disadvantages of private transport

It is known that the individual transport is used mainly in cities, it should be noted that there
are cases where this is very difficult or even impractical.

Among several disadvantages of private transportations, we can mention:

 The need for large investment of public resources in the maintenance of road
infrastructure;
 Need for investments in traffic control system;
 Increase in air pollution;
 Occurrence of a large number of accidents with financial burdens for our society;
 Large consumption of energy, compromising sustainable development;
 City inefficiency.
8

Conclusion
It can be realized that although public transport has some advantages, at the same time it deals
with some disadvantages also. Simultaneously, from point of view of private car, the opinion
is the same. But it should be noted that the number of car usage advantages is higher than
public transport usage advantages. On the other hand, car usage disadvantages are fewer than
for public transport usage. It is a dilemma that world-wide transport policies encourage the
use of public transport to reduce the environmental emission even though the advantages of
public transport are less than for car usage.

In fact, public transports still face great challenge to solve the need of the many passengers,
such as public workers, students, and business people. Aspects such as punctuality, short
waiting time, and low frequency of the vehicles are also considered other obstacles of the
public transportation services.
