Biography:
Alfred Deller has been the subject of two biographies:
For a short survey of Deller's career, see (in english): "The Gramophone" (August 1998, p.
20-21) or (in french) "Diapason" (April 2004, p.48-58)
Part I lists the original recordings (around 136 up to now) and re-edited material containing
tracks not previously released. Each individual titles is (or will be) linked to a descriptive
section containing as much information as possible about the original recording; this
description is cross-linked to LPs and CDs known to have been available on the market at the
date of this update.
Deller's original recording have been re-edited under many "national" labels. For the sake of
completeness, I tried in the linked web pages to list all recordings, both LPs or CDs known to
me which is a rather very difficult task. Many Vanguard LPs appeared as Amadeo in Europe,
some Harmonia mundi (France) were released (with few vice-versa) in Germany as Harmonia
mundi (german pressing) with it's own numbering system (subsequently BASF, EMI, BMG),
in USA as RCA "Victrola", in England as Oryx, and more ....
Great care have been taken to prevent misinformations and a large part of the data originates
from records themselves (although often not as reliable as it should be). If the recording was
not available, the content originates from usual sources (periodicals such as The Gramophone
(and the Catalogue), Diapason (and the Catalogue), Bielefelder Katalog, Notes, and Fanfare,
etc.). For pre-1955 editions, I also used the World Encyclopedia of Recorded Music
[WERM]. An excellent non-descriptive discography could be found in "ALFRED DELLER,
A Singularity of Voice" by Michael & Mollie Hardwick (Proteus, 1980) [SoV] but some
minor original entries are missing and the list is a little bit unorganized. Also useful for the
Harmonia mundi recordings was an HM export catalogue (ca 1972). Alas ! if all this failed,
reference was made to the french book "Diapason - Guide de la musique ancienne et baroque"
(Coll. Bouquins, Robert Laffond, 1993) [GMAB]; although impressive in term of quality and
amount of content, readers should be careful about many recording dates listed. Also data has
been re-checked using the Indiana University Library excellent database [IUCAT] and more
recently the Bibliothèque Nationale de France on-line catalogue [BN-Opale plus].
I tried to list titles according to their label and recording dates. In the linked section, I tried to
follow the track order of the recording; in some cases when the recording was not available,
the order may need correction by a careful reader owning the disc. In Part I, my goal is to
cover all original recordings, but this may well be wishful thinking without comments and
corrections. These could be directed to my E-mail address (pfr@videotron.ca). Credit for any
significant contribution will be given at the end of the discography.
Part II deals mostly with reedition on CDs; I tried to be complete, but the goals is really to
inform readers about available recordings on the market.in different countries
Part IV deals with other loosely associated material, or releases where insufficient
information is known.

a recording containing some never previously released material. This Part excludes CDs)
Vanguard Recordings
1954-1967 Original recordings (total=..)
Notes: Vanguard released Deller's recordings in two different ways; most titles were
released under the label Vanguard "The Bach Guils": BG 5xx-6xx (mono releases) /
BGS 5yyy, later 70 6xx (stereo releases). These were mostly recorded in Europe, but
distributed there under the Amadeo label: AVR 6xxx or 5xxx (mono releases) /AVRS
6xxx or 5xxx (stereo releases). A lesser amount of recordings were made in USA and
released only as Vanguard VRS (= Vanguard Recording Society, 4xx, 1xxx, mono,
2yyy,stereo) and Vanguard SRV (=Everyman Serie, an economical serie from
composite selections of regular issues). Many "Bach Guild" have been re-issued with
different numbers, the most significant serie being the Vanguard « The Bach Guild »
Historical Anthology of Music (HM-1, etc.)
Only original releases are preceeded with a number. Also many re-edition and
composite releases have been issued; they are preceeded with a number only if the
release contains original material. It should also be noted that many original releases
were issued by other companies (such as Philips, Nixa or Pye in UK).
Also for date of recordind / release, most information originates from CD re-edition;
most LPs have no date on the sleeve; this information is highly confusing due to the
carelesness by Vanguard to verify and standardize its own printed information.

Deller Recordings
1965-1970 Original recordings (total=..)
Notes Although there are no specific recordings strictly labeled "Deller Recordings",
it is important to understand the purpose of this specific list.
When Alfred Deller ceased his recordings for Vanguard (ca 1965), he founded his
own company "Deller Records", and licenced his own recordings to other companies,
the most famous being Harmonia mundi (France) with number DR 201 to 219, but
205; these LPs were also released under other labels such as Harmonia mundi
(Germany), mostly serie 700 and in USA under RCA "Victrola" label. Starting with
Harmonia mundi HMD 220 in 1970, it appears that all subsequent issues were
produced by Harmonia mundi.
Deller himself gives in the august 1979 (p. 311) edition of "Gramophone" the story of
his beginning with Harmonia mundi:
... Then in 1967 the Consort was giving a concert in Avignon and Bernard
Coutaz, head of Harmonia Mundi, came up afterwards and said he'd really
like to record us. We arranged things so as to start a small company within a
company, Deller Records. I would be the artistic director, Coutaz would
handle the business...

Notes This is the name of a cultural musical periodical that seems to have been
published starting in the late 50's and ending in early 70's; each issue included articles,
a discography, iconographic documents and a 17cm LP. Around 54 issues were
released and some LPs contained material that appeared later on Harmonia mundi
label.
Notes about Harmonia mundi numbering system (see also Deller Records above):
Nearly all Alfred Deller's original recording were released by Harmonia mundi using a
2xx digit system, starting at 201 and ending at 252/53; numbers after 253 were
compilations.
At the beginning Harmonia mundi was only the distributor of Deller Recordings and
releases used the DR prefix (from DR 201 to DR 219), until around 1970; then the
following recordings were identified as Harmonia mundi "Deller Recordings" HMD
2xx; later they changed the prefix for all Deller Recordings to HMU (U=universal,
both mono/stereo), starting at HMU 234 (around 1974) and again to only HM (around
1980) on the sleeve; many releases with the HM prefix were in the Harmonia mundi
"Musique d'Abord" economic serie, the LP being often identified with the original
prefix (i.e. HM 225 on sleeve, HMD 225 on LP).
Around 1973 (HMD 226), Harmonia mundi decided to stop issuing Deller's recording
on a sequential order and to use a decimal order (230, 240, 250), issuing a non Alfred
Deller recording as HMD 227. They changed their mind and started again issuing
Deller's recording in a sequential order (HMD 228). The following list is not restricted
only to original releases and includes composite re-editions, but only issues with total
or partial original materials are preceded by a number.

Re-editions (CD)
Notes: Most entries are preceeded with a number; this refers to the currently or the last
currently available CD. If no number appears, it means that it is a composite version of
LPs/CDs not specifically dedicated to Deller. Also when exactly the same CD is issued in
many countries with a different numbering system, only the european CD bears a number
(this is more specific to vanguard re-issues).
