CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter includes the review of related literature and studies which the researchers
have thoroughly examined about the topic under study.

2.1 Foreign literature

Shiela Allan (2012) pointed out in her article the “Positive Impact of Internet of
Communicating Skills”. This discussed that the internet is a powerful tool that is
revolutionizing children learning in communication and playing. If properly used, the
internet allows children to socialize with other children through the use of email, chat rooms,
and instant messaging increasing the development of communication and social skills. As
children use the internet to connect with places around the world exchange mail electronic
with pen pals, they are able to share different cultures and tradition.
This literature is closely related to the current study for it directly mentions the role of
internet specially websites to enhance individuals’ communication and social skills. The
present study like the article reviewed aims to establish a connection to the various websites
used by the students and their impact on their communication skills.

2.2 Local Literature

According to Rejie D. Astodello article, TABUK CITY, Kalinga – People all over the
world have been enjoying the benefits of using technology nowadays. In the past,
communicating and free sharing of thought between people are restricted by long distance,
race, and even religion. But now these barriers can no longer stop the flow of information
and knowledge because now the new world of social networking allows free sharing of
thoughts through online social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and
the like.

Since students are highly motivated to using social media sites the majority of them use
these to satisfy their social needs more than their academic needs. They have the freedom to
do whatever they want – they can upload or download data, they can make new friends and
comment on other people’s lives, and they can even create other online identities the real
world does not allow. It has been observed too that the majority of the students nowadays,
particularly those in the secondary level, spend most of their time chatting with their
acquaintances, playing online games, and watching videos instead of reading their lessons,
making their assignments, and other academic requirements. The main reason is when they

work or search their materials online they get attracted to social networking sites to kill
boredom during study time, diverting their attention from their work. The darker side of this
that has gained the attention of many parents is that some students are getting lazier and are
no longer interested in going to school. This is probably due to being extensively indulged to
get global access and therefore leading them to perform less academically.

Rejie D. Astodello have observed from his Grades 7 and 8 students at the Tabuk City
National High School the same positive and negative impact of using social media inside and
outside the classroom. Astodello found these social sites helpful when one time he needed to
communicate with his students, reminding them of their assignments and urgent
requirements. In addition, Astodello also used these social sites to refer his students to
helpful resources that could fetch them higher grades in academics. Astodello tried to
encourage the students, particularly the teens with gadgets having internet facilities, to use it
to supplement their researches in the library rather than the usual chatting with friends all the
time.

According to a survey conducted by Pew Research Center, as of 2015 the largest social
networking company, Facebook for example, has 1.49 billion active users and the number
ofusers is increasing every year. As part of the said survey, 72 percent of high school

students and 78 percent college students spend time on these social networking sites –
Facebook,

Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Viber, E-mail, etc. These numbers evidently indicate how
much the student community is involved in this virtual world of networking. Students prefer
social media sites as reliable sources of information because everything is a package. A
research conducted by Gagne sometime in 2003 defined media in general as some kind of
components in a students’ environment that can stimulate them to study better. Researchers
also found that the use of some types of social media has beneficial effects to students, not

only on their academic needs but also to help them establish a sense of identity and build and
enhance networking skills.

2.3 Foreign studies

Thithongkam (2011) conducted a study about the development of English writing

skills using communicative skills exercises on the internet. The researcher results indicated
that communicative exercises in the internet supported improving students’ writing skills,
and assisted 99 percent of the samples to pass the course based on the university criteria.
Based on the information from student behavior observation, it indicated that students had
better motivation in studying English, and always perform writing skills. The learning
effectiveness is significant at the level of .05. Satisfaction with studying English after using
communicative exercise was positive. The student satisfaction with learning English after
using communicative exercises on the internet was at the level of strong satisfaction
(mean=4.319) or 86.38 percent.
This is similar to the present study because it both discussed the benefits that the
students get from usingthe Internet in their studies. It showed the improvement on the
communication skills of the students mafter performing difeerent exercises on the Internet.

Most of the communication on social media is very informal. Spelling and grammar is not
important most of the time. People write in short forms as log as the message is received.

This make it difficult for those who use it for communication to write properly where official
language is required such as when applying for a job.

At the same time, people only type on their keyboard or use pictures. This may make it
difficult for one to give a formal speech in front of an audience since one may develop a
challenge of inability to pronounce certain words or articulate themselves properly.

2.4 Local studies

According to Edu Lopez, instant messaging (IM) has emerged as the most popular
messaging tool in Southeast Asia (SEA), with IM usage increasing and SMS decreasing
across the board except in the Philippines. A mobile consumer survey of consulting firm
Deloitte revealed that 73 percent of Filipinos still prefer to use SMS but 33 percent of those
who use IM turn to Facebook messenger instead of pure over-the-top (OTT) IM services to
communicate. The survey showed that 94 percent of Filipino IM users use Facebook
messenger, an app that has been downloaded three times more than Skype and 10 times more
than WhatsApp in the country.
The popularity of IM will continue to hold in the region, with Filipinos finding it a
convenient option for chatting with friends and family overseas.

CHAPTER 3: METHOD AND PROCEDURES

This chapter presents the methods to be used in the study. It also describes the subjects of the
study, the instruments used, and the procedure of data gathering.

3.1 Description of Research Instrument

The following instruments will be used on the conduct of the research:

1. Questionnaires - The questionnaire will be used to assess the students in answering

the statements that were given.

2. Respondents – The respondents will be used to check the statement of problems
honestly.

3.2 Data Gathering Procedure

The study would be secured by the researcher from Cabuyao, City of Laguna. After
which the researcher will go to selected section of the school and personally distribute the
questionnaire to the students. The questionnaires will be scored, tallied, and tabulated.

3.3 Statistical Treatment Applied

To interpret the gathered data, the students will use the following:
1.) Percentage, arithmetic mean, and standard deviations to describe the profile of the
respondents
2.) Test of difference between paired observations/groups
