GROUP PROJECT (20%)

(WEEK 7 – WEEK 13)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

One of the main objective of building design is to ensure the provision of continuous comfort for
occupants in spite of adversity and variable external conditions. Parallel technological
development has resulted in the use of mechanical and electrical (M&E) system, which is complex
and advancing, to maintain a good balance between human comfort and the environment.

To ensure that students have a better understanding on the specific M&E system in building,
students are required to conduct a case study on the system based on online resources. The detail
instruction are as follows:

1. Form a group of five students

2. Case study of M&E systems: Each group must include at least THREE (3) systems based on
the following topic:
a. Mechanical ventilation system
b. Active fire protection system
c. Building transportation system
d. Electrical supply system
3. For each selected system, students are required to:
a. identify the main components of the system (based on drawing or layout plan available
online)
b. analyze and explain in detail on how the system works
c. produce a brief schematic drawings of the system by using any drawing aid such as
AutoCAD, Google Sketchup, etc.

REPORT FORMAT:

1. Case study review report in A4 size (min. 15 pages and max. 30 pages)
2. Must be written in English using MS Word format.
3. Use Times New Roman, Font Size 12 and 1.5 line spacing. The left and right margin should
be 2.5 cm, while the top and bottom margin must be 3cm.

 CONTENTS:
1.0 Cover page : Group name, members name, and section
2.0 Member’s name and photo.
3.0 The selection of M&E system in the building
• Background of the system
• Main component of the system
• Working principle of the system (how the system work)
• Specification of the system, if any.
4.0 Layout drawings (plan/section/3D) and schematic drawings of the systems in the
building.
5.0 Relevant standard and requirements for the selected M&E system in building, if
any.
6.0 Report references.

PRESENTATION
By video presentation (10-15 minutes; each group member must involve in video presentation.)

PROJECT ASSESSMENT:

1. Project Coordination and Report Writing :5 marks

2. Layout and Schematic Drawings :7.5 marks
3. Presentation Technique and Communication :7.5 marks

PROJECT SUBMISSION:

Please submit the report and video presentation (softcopy) through Edmodo no later than
18th June 2020 (Lecture Week 13) before 5 p.m.
