A STUDY ON THE LACK OF INITIATIVE IN PARTICIPATING IN A GROUP


ACTIVITIES AND DISCUSSIONS ORGANISED IN CLASS. AMONG CLASS
9C STUDENTS OF CMS H.S.S CHUNGAM.

ABSTRACT The title of the lack of initiative in participating in group


activities and discussions organized in class. in group activities and discussions
in their class. Amog class IX C students of CMS H S S CHUNGAM. This article
shows the student participation order to find out the lack of interest of the
students for participation of group activities . I selected an action research
method. Firstly I gave some activities for students then I observed each students
then I understand few students are not participating in the group activities
.because of some students are suffering learning difficulties so I change my
learning style and adopt various interesting method of classroom activities
.after the study I got a good result from my students they are become very
interested to participate this type of activities

INTRODUCTION

This articles is related to an Action Research about a study on the lack of


initiative in participating in group activities and discussions organized in class
among class IX C Students of CMS H S S Chungam.

Action research refers to a wide variety of evaluate. Investigate and analytical


research methods designed to diagnose problems or weakness whether
oraganisational and help educants develop practical solutions in address them
quickly and effeciantly.

Action research is a valuable tool in the hands of the teacher to solve day to
day problems of class teaching and educational problems .it provides an
occasion to the teachers to use the imaginations of the children creativity to
change classroom practices. There are five steps included in action research
procedure there are:Identification of the proble problem, formulating action
hypothesis, analysis and interpretation of the data and conclusion in order to
find out the problems the students I choose different methods in classroom.
Finally I found out that some students are not willing to take initiatives in
participating in group activities and discussions organized in class they tried to
distract others in the class. In order to define the problem I chosen the group
discussion . it was one of the most important learning strategy used in
classroom environment. This study is conducted in CMS H S S Chungam in class
9c among 34 students.

Behind the problem there are lot of reason. The problem causes concerning
the problem can be listed as:

*The students do not know how to behave in group environment .

*The students are afraid an happening of mistakes {incorrect responses}

Data collection

In order to find out these problems I observe keenly. The observation method
and questioning method are the most important stage in action research
teacher can easily collect data for analyzing the frequent observation and
monitoring of group activities and behavior of each numbers. In the group
before and after the implementation of remedial measures.

To find out the participation of students in group activity I conducted an


activities for that I selected the chapter “Ancient Tamilakam” in social science
on the basis of this chapter I conducted some activity .the first activity was a
short not preparartion I asked to students to conduct a group ,discussions and
write about features of” megalithic monuments”

Then I observed each group and found that some students are not activity.

After I teach about the importance and benefit of group discussion .group
activity will improve the knowledge of students and it will improve the quality
of cooperation helping mentality etc. I explained the about all these factors.

From the experience of the first class I conducted other activity related to
same topic I prepared a video presentation and gave that to student.

After the two activities I realized the second method is very suitable for
students because the visuals are more interested to students their highly
attentions are there so the students are actively participated in this activity but
some other students are not working properly because of their family
problems and low IQ level large care is needed in the case of such students I
will give more importance in the case of such students.

Finally I prepare a checklist for students who are participated and not
participated in the group activities.

From the table it is clear that number of girls is much better then boys in the
participation of group activities because the maimum girls in the class is low I
found the students who are not taken initiative to respond in group activities
from the table it is very clear most of the student are inactive in the classroom
so the teaching methods area failed in the classroom most of the students
were interested to complete the test individually they were not sharing the
thought within their friends.

and by the
result
obtained from the observation methods, average of students were
participated per day among this average . we can clearly say that
there is better participation is from the past.

Hypothesis

From the above analysis and interpretation of data we can


understand that by applying the above action strategies are students
in actively and lack of initiatives in group activity can we changed but
these exist a need of more research and action undertaken to have a
very important change in students participation however the teacher
should adopt new method of teaching and increase motivation and
encouragement in the classroom.

Conclusion

The action research aided me to do the best as a teacher to improve


the quality of teaching and learning it made me as a teacher to know
pupil and their needs in a better way and to act upon their issues and
need.
