I had never seen Sanaz without her uniform, and stood there almost transfixed as she took off her robe and
scarf. She was wearing an orange t-shirt tucked into tight jeans and brown boots, yet the most radical
transformation was the mass of shimmering dark brown hair that now framed her face. She shook her
magnificent hair from side to side, a gesture that I later noticed was a habit with her; she would toss her head
and run her fingers through her hair every once in a while, as if making sure that her most prized possession
was still there. (Nafisi 2003: 16)

2. Case: “Colorless green ideas sleep furiously”

Question: Why is this sentence strange? Share your opinion.

2. this sentence strange because
3. Semantics is the study of significance. More exactly it is the study of the connection
between linguistic languages and the meanings. Semantics not only focus on how words
express meaning but also on how words, phrases and a unified sentence that make meaning
in language (focus in studies the exact meaning) independent context. Pragmatics is the
study of context. More precisely it is the study of the way context can impact our concept of
linguistic utterances. Focus on the meaning of words according to text and the implicit
meanings as well (language use)  dependent context
4. In the semantic, if the speaker said the sentence likes that, it can be mean has a different
meaning for the listener. The listener will accept that sentence with a cold
(unresponsive/frigid condition) situation when gathering up. However, some listeners will
respond to it that a speaker was cold (freezing) because the window was opened. The cold
has many meanings like cool, chill (unresponsive/frigid conditions/freezing). Therefore, in
that sentence has many meanings or it can be said lexical ambiguity or reflected meaning
(another sense of the same expression that one sense of a word forms part of our response to
another sense.) For pragmatics, the sentence included in “pragmatics is the study of how
more gets communicated than it is said” because the speaker has hidden meaning of the
speaker is freezing (a speaker wants the window close).
5. – Direct speech  there is direct connection between the linguistic structure and the work
they are doing (illocutionary force). The examples of direct speech :
 Assertion (declarative) : he washed the dishes
 Question (interrogative) : who wash the dishes?
 Order/request (imperative) : do the dishes, please?
- Indirect speech  the speech act is performed indirectly through the performance of
another speech act (no direct connection between a sentence and no illocutionary force).
The examples of indirect speech :
 Request (declarative) : I would like for you to wash the dishes.
 Request (interrogative) : Would you mind washing the dishes?
 Shut the door!
