1. Rondalla
– is an ensemble of string instruments with a pick.
- the word “rondalla” came from the Spanish word ronda
meaning “serenade”.
- it is played with percussion instruments like the drums and
marimba.
Different musical instruments in Rondalla:
a. Banduria – a 14-stringed pear-shaped lure with a round
sound hole, played with a plectrum.
b. Laud – is a 14-stringed pear-shaped lute with f-shapes
sound holes. It is bigger than banduria.
c. Octavina – a 14-stringed lute, shaped like a small guitar,
and played with a plectrum.
d. Guitar – a six-stringed instrument played by strumming or
plucking the strings
e. Double Bass or Bajo de Unas – a bass guitar which looks
like a big guitar and is played by a plectrum.
2. Brass band
- is a musical ensemble that consists of brass wind
instruments, most often with a percussion section.
- it is used an army band, honoring great individual.
What are the instruments used in brass band?
a. trumpet
- highest register in the brass family
- played by blowing through closed lips
b. trombone
- large trumpet and aerophone
- largest and lowest pitch brass instrument
- sound is produced by vibrating the lips into a large cupped
mouthpiece.

- made of tube more than 20 ft.
- pitch is controlled by the adjustment of lip tension in the

- is a band that use improvised instruments made of
bamboo.
- the first bamboo band in the Phils. was formed in 1896.
Ex. piccolo, tuba, clarinets, flutes and saxophone made of
bamboo.
- Fr. Diego Cera Dela Virgen started the construction of the
bamboo organ and finished it for 8 years in 1824.
- Prof. Armando V. Salarza became the famed organist of
the bamboo organ.
- The “Las Pinas” bamboo organ is known as the oldest and
the largest existing bamboo organ in the world today.
ANGKLUNG ENSEMBLE
Angklung – is an idiophone musical instrument which
originated in Indonesia.
- it has two or more bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo
frame.
HIMIG PANGKAT KAWAYAN
- is also known as the “Singing Bamboos” of the Philippines.
