TITLE: What’s wrong with our food system SPEAKER/S: Birke Baehr
PUBLICATION DATE: August 2010 FOUND ON: TED
TOPIC/PROBLEM (IN ONE SENTENCE): what we eat now have problems with nature.
PURPOSE: to inform what problems does food system have and how can we change
Scientific concepts or principles discussed/included: How and to what extent do the scientific principles
address the issue:
1. “There’s genetically engineered seeds and This is the problem that those foods that are genetically
organisms.” engineered have problems that cause cancer.
2. “More harmful chemicals are sprayed on Those chemicals are used to kill weeds and bugs, but it
fruits and vegetables, like pesticide and also kills us and nature. The more they use those
herbicides to kill weeds and bugs.” chemicals, the more nature and people suffer because of
chemicals.
3. Make different choices which is buying food He is conveying that people can change the wrong system
from local farmers or people who we know. simply by buying food from local farmers. This will cause
more power to local farmers and less power to companies
that make genetically engineered foods.
4. Local food isn't as expensive as genetically Local food seems expensive because the money people
modified food. spend directly on food is more than genetically modified
food. However, in the future, people would spend more
money on hospitals because they have problems with
food. This comparison breaks the bias of genetically
modified food is cheaper.
5. Conventional farmers use chemical fertilizer This is a problem that the plants we eat are grown in the
made from fossil fuels. fossil fuel fields. This chemical fertilizer can cause
mutation of food and those chemicals can be ingested by
people.
What implications do the scientific principles have on different factors such as social, economic, cultural, ethical,
religious, etc?
Those principles affect economically and ethically. First, people would change their buying choices. They would try
to find and eat the plants that are grown without any chemicals. Then local farmers would have more profit, then
the market would be focused on them. Second, people would think about genetically modified food more
seriously. In the labs, people combine many DNAs and make new food that must not exist in nature. This is
ethically wrong for nature.
CONCLUSION/S:
People need to know how the food they eat are produced and try to eat healthy food for themselves and nature.
HOW IS THIS PRESENTATION RELEVANT TO YOUR WORK?
This presentation is relevant with the avocado we learned because both of them talk about the food system and
how plants are grown and consumed by people. They both have systemic problem while they are grown.
WHAT ELEMENTS ON THIS TED PRESENTATION ARE DIFFERENT FROM A NORMAL PRESENTATION?
Presenter made many jokes that criticize real life like he wants to NFL play because he can affect the world more
than organic farmers.
