Reg # 2016245
Experiment # 4
Objective
 To observe the flow of real and reactive power in a three phase transmission line with
known, passive load
 To observe the voltage regulation at the receiving end as a function of the type of load.

Discussion
In this experiment different loads (resistive, inductive and capacitive) will be connected to the
transmission line and the flow of real and reactive power will be determined for each one.

Experiment # 10
Objective
 To study how synchronous capacitor can regulate the receiver voltage
 To study the distributed capacitance and the long, high voltage line

Discussion
Synchronous capacitor
A synchronous condenser is a DC-excited synchronous motor, whose shaft is not connected to
anything. Its field is controlled by a voltage regulator to either generate or absorb reactive
power as needed to adjust the grid's voltage, or to improve power factor.

Conclusion
From the above two tables it is concluded that the voltage cannot be regulated over wide range
when transmission line impedance is low.

Line Compensation using Capacitor

Series line compensation is the method of improving the system voltage by connecting a
capacitor in series with the transmission line. Here capacitors are connected in series to
approximately make sending end voltage equal to receiving end voltage.

The reactive power which a Synchronous condenser must absorb to make sending end voltage
equal to receiving end voltage at various loads is found below.

Objective
 To observe the division of power between two transmission lines
 To learn properties of regulating transformer
 To modify power division between two parallel lines using regulating auto transformer

Discussion
Auto-Transformer
An auto transformer is a type of electrical transformer with only one winding. It auto transformer
is similar to a two winding transformer but varies in the way the primary and secondary winding
are interrelated. In an auto transformer, one single winding is used as primary winding as well as
secondary winding. But in two windings transformer two different windings are used for primary
and secondary purpose.
