Installation Instructions for BDA’s with Digital Attenuators

Models: BDA-1819-60
BDA-8087-80 (Nextel SMR 800)
BDA-8087-80C (Cellular A and/or B)
All of CCI’s Bi-directional Amplifiers ship from
the factory set at maximum gain. The units
listed above ship with between 80 - 82 dB of
Gain. For actual gain please refer to the one
page test data sheet that ships with each
unit. The gain on these units can be attenu-
ated by adjusting a set of two dip switches
inside the front cover of the unit.

With the door hinge oriented on the left hand

side of the unit, the text on the door should
appear in an upright position and you should
be able to read the text from left to right. Ver-
ify that the unit is has one of the model num-
bers listed above. If model number does not
match one of those listed above, please refer
to the appropriate instructions for gain adjust-
ments.

Open the front cover by loosening the six

clamps using a screw driver. Once the unit is
open, you will observe a printed circuit board
(PCB) in the center of the unit between the
uplink and downlink amplifiers.

On the bottom of the PCB board you should

observe two 4-place DIP switches. The set of
DIP switches on the left is for adjusting the
UPLINK, this is the path back to the Donor.
The set of DIP switches on the right is adjust-
ing the DOWNLINK. This is the path to your
indoor or service antenna(s). Between the
DIP switches you will see markings directly
on the PCB that correspond with each of the
4-places on each DIP switch. From bottom to
top, these markings are “4” which correspond
with DIP switch position 1, “8” which corre-
spond with DIP switch position 2, “16” which
correspond with DIP switch position 3 and
“NU” which correspond with DIP switch posi-
tion 4.

These markings indicate the amount of at-

tenuation that can be added in the UPLINK
or DOWNLINK. While the UPLINK and
DOWNLINK can be adjusted separately with
no adverse affect to the unit, it is recom-
mended that, unless you have a specific re-
quirement, the gain be adjusted equally in
both directions.

The unit ships with all of the DIP switches in

the left or ON position. In order to add at-
tenuation, move the DIP switch correspond-
ing the amount of attenuation you wish to
add to the left or the OFF position. So if you
wish to add 4 dB of attenuation in both the
UPLINK and DOWNLINK, you would move
the both DIP switch positions corresponding
with the “4” on the printed circuit board to the
right or the OFF position. The attenuation of
each of the switches is additive, so if you
want 12 dB of attenuation, in both the UP-
LINK and DOWNLINK, you would move the
both the DIP switch position corresponding
with the “4” and the “8” on the printed circuit
board to the right or the OFF position.

Note: You will see below each of the DIP

switches a set of jumpers that may be open
or closed. Between the jumpers you will also
see markings directly on the PCB that corre-
spond with each of the jumpers. From bottom
to top these markings are “1” and “2”. These
jumpers also correspond to attenuation set-
tings. However these are reserved for use by
the factory to balance the gain of the UPLINK
and DOWNLINK amplifiers. Do not attempt
to adjust these settings

the DOWNLINK. This is the configuration of

the unit as it ships from the factory. If the unit 2
shipped with a maximum gain of 80 dB, the
unit is still producing 80 dB of gain as no at- 1
tenuation has been added. (Remember the
top DIP switch position is not used and has
no effect on attenuation)

2. The Example on the right shows the unit

in a balanced configuration, with 8 dB of at-
tenuation in both the UPLINK and the
DOWNLINK. If the unit shipped with a maxi-
mum gain of 80 dB, the unit is now producing NU NU
72 dB of gain. (Remember the top DIP switch 16
position is not used and has no effect on at- 8
tenuation)

3. The Example on the right shows the unit

in a balanced configuration, with 12 dB of at-
tenuation in both the UPLINK and the NU NU
DOWNLINK. If the unit shipped with a maxi-
mum gain of 80 dB, the unit is now producing 16
68 dB of gain. (Remember the top DIP switch 8

4. The Example on the right shows the unit

in a balanced configuration, with 28 dB of
attenuation in both the UPLINK and the
DOWNLINK. If the unit shipped with a maxi- NU NU
mum gain of 80 dB, the unit is now producing 16
52 dB of gain. This represents the maximum
8
attenuation for this unit. Any additional at-
tenuation will need to be done externally. 4
