TRACK AND FIELD RULES AND REGULATIONS

GIRLS and BOYS

1. Number of Participants
Alternate years: separate division meet / All-SAISA meet
a. 30 athletes any combination
b. 3 coaches
c. A student is determined eligible if she/he has not reached their 19th birthday
by the 1st day of August of the start of the current SAISA year.
d. Participating schools are responsible for providing the appropriate supervision
of elementary school students in attendance at SAISA events.

2. Rules of Play
a. All IAAF rules and regulations are in force with the following SAISA
adaptations. *Denotes a SAISA adaptation.
b. Use of spikes is optional for the runner.
c. *A coach may scratch an athlete from an event during the Track & Field meet;
the athlete may compete in later event(s)

3. Age/Sex Divisions*
The following competition divisions will be in effect.
10-12 Girls 10-12 Boys
13-14 Girls; 13-14 Boys
15 & over Girls 15 & over Boys

4. Competition in an Older Age Division


a. Any athlete may compete in an older age division of the same sex. But that
athlete then may not compete in that same event in his/her own age division.
b. If an athlete competes in an older division of the same sex, that athlete does
not forfeit eligibility for his/her own age division.
c. All events, regardless of age division, count as an allotted event for the
athlete.
d. An older athlete may not compete in a younger age division.

5. Entries per Event*


a. Each participating school may enter up to 3 athletes per event.
b. Competing in a preliminary event constitutes entry into an event.
c. Each participating school may enter only 1 relay team per event. List up to 6
athletes on official entry for relays. By noon of relay day, submit to race
director names of four relay participants. Use of alternates is at race
director’s discretion.
d. Seed times will be submitted one week before meet for the 400m timed final.
e. Additions or changes to individual events must be submitted one week before
event. Only scratches allowed after this—no additions or changes.

6. Individual Athlete Event Limits*

8. Length of Meet
The meet will be 2 days in length.

9. Order of Events

Field events are interspersed throughout meet, division-by-division, in six
sessions. They sometimes run concurrent with running events, sometimes
separated, at host’s discretion.

10. Finals
a. Preliminary events: 100m- 200 M: Top 6 times from heats advance to final

b. Timed Final events: 400m, 800 M, 1500 M, 3000 M: Each race is a final

11. Scoring
a. Divisions Scoring for Individual Events: 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1 points for first-sixth
place.
b. Divisions Scoring Relay Events: 15, 12, 10, 8, 4, 2 points for first through sixth
place.
c. For overall team scoring, each team is awarded points based on ordered
finish in each division: 1st place team 10 points, 2nd place team 8 points, 3rd
place team 6 points, 4th place team 4 points, 5th place team 2 points, 6th
place team 1 point.

12. Awards
a. The tournament director is responsible for purchasing first and second place
team trophies for the track and field meet. (See “overall team scoring” above
in #11c).
b. First place trophies/plaques should be awarded for high point in each
age/sex division (based on 11a/b above).
c. First place trophies/plagues should be awarded for high point in each age
group—
10-12 Boys & Girls, 13-14 Boys & Girls, 15 & over Boys & Girls—also based on

11a/b above.
d. In a split division meet, ribbons for first through third places should be
given for each individual event. Ribbon colors are: 1st-Blue, 2nd-Red, 3rd-White.
e. In an all SAISA meet, ribbons are awarded for first through sixth places for
individual and relay events. Ribbon colors are: 1st-Blue, 2nd-Red, 3rd-White, 4th-
Yellow, 5th-Green, 6th-Pink.

13. Athlete Numbers


The host school will provide numbers for front and back of each athlete such that
the background color for each team is distinctly different or at the discretion of
the host school.

15. Length of Season


As a guideline for administrators and coaches, it is suggested that official SAISA
events tournament preparation be limited to approximately six (6) weeks.

16. Cancellation of SAISA Meet
If 2 or more SAISA teams are able to compete and break SAISA records, those
records will stand as a new SAISA record.
