Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Exploring 2-D & 3-D Shapes.

Content Area: Mathematics.
Grade Level(s): Kindergarten.
Content Standard Addressed: MGSEK.G.3 Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, “flat”) or
three-dimensional (“solid”).

Technology Standard Addressed: 3. Knowledge Constructor.

Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft Word

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The lesson plan is focused on identifying two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. The technology tool
selected for this lesson, Microsoft Word, will be used to display the information on 2-D and 3-D shapes in a
flexible format. I used multiple means of representation to display the information to the students. The use of
contrasting colors, different font styles and sizes, increased sizes of text and images, and interactive shapes
support student’s engagement and representation of the content. Students will be presented with the
information of what a 2-D and 3-D shapes is and then will be asked to identify which shapes are two
dimensional versus three dimensional. The 3-D shapes on the Word document are interactive and allows
students to discover the multiple sides and features of 3-D shapes.

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will introduce the standard for this lesson: MGSEK.G.3 Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying
in a plane, “flat”) or three-dimensional (“solid”). The teacher will ask students if they know what a two-
dimensional or three-dimensional shape is. The discussion of definitions of each will be explained by the
teacher. Showing examples from around the classroom on how to identify the difference of 2-D and 3-D
shapes. Some examples include a flat piece of paper (2-D) compared to a book with multiple pages (3-D).
After the examples and definitions have been taught, the introduction of the Word document will occur and
the activity that needs to be completed will be introduced to the students.

Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
Students will be required to work individually on computers to complete part of this assignment. The Word
document gives three clues on how to identify 2-D and 3-D shapes each along with seventeen examples of
both types of shapes. Students will be asked to evaluate and manipulate shapes to decide on whether they
are two-dimensional or three-dimensional. The 3-D shapes presented are interactive and can be manipulated
to see each side of the shape. Students must recreate their own drawing of at least three 2-D shapes and
three 3-D shapes on paper. The final product demonstrates a student’s understanding of the different types
of shapes. The lesson will be concluded by choosing students to go over the correct categories of the
seventeen shapes presented on Word document. Teachers will provide feedback only if the answer is
incorrect allowing for students to discuss why the certain shape are 2-D or 3-D, practicing collaboration across
the classroom. The use of this basic productivity tool provides a resource to create multiple representations in
order to create a deeper understanding for the student. The use of various medias, engaging content, and
activities used to master content allow for students to reach a higher level of learning. The overall lesson
should take one class period to complete.

Reflective Practice:

I believe this lesson greatly impacts a student’s learning due to the exploration of a basic productivity
software that present information in a self-engaging manner and allows for the student to grasp the content
and manipulate it to deeper their understanding on a topic. To further extend this lesson a teacher could ask
students to create a picture or art piece using the Word document through moving and manipulating the 2-D
and 3-D shapes. Another technology tool that could further enhance this lesson would be a software that
allows for students to build 2-D and 3-D shapes.
