Chapter 7

Motivating Yourself and Others

1. Describe the difference between external and internal motivations and give examples.
- Motivation is based on both internal and external forces. Internal motivation is derived by
having a sense of meaning and purpose as this is a result of challenges and potential
growth. Research suggests that motivation is from job content, not job environment. On the
other hand, external motivation is based on what we can gain and is based on promotions,
recognition/awards, and job performance. Incentives are a major component in motivating
today’s workers.

2. Describe the needs present in Maslow’s hierarchy. How can organizations attempt to meet
these needs so that employees are motivated to produce more work?
- The needs that are included in Maslow’s hierarchy are the following: first, physiological
needs, which is the needs for food, clothing, sleep, and shelter that were described as
survival/ lower-order needs; second, safety and security needs, where most people want
order, predictability, and freedom from physical harm in their personal and professional
lives and will be motivated to achieve this safety; third, social or belongingness needs, this
deals with emotional and mental well-being like the need for affection and identification;
fourth, esteem needs wherein people need respect and recognition from others as well as an
inner sense of achievement and self-worth; lastly, self-actualization needs, this is the need
for self-fulfillment which is the need to be all that you can be to have mastery of what you
are doing. The organization can attempt to meet these needs as the needs of people are
arranged in a hierarchy of prepotency and that people have a number of needs that require
satisfaction to motivate people in producing more work.

3. Who is the best judge of what is and what is not a motivating factor for employees? Explain.
- Motivational factors are those elements that go above and beyond the basic maintenance
factors. When opportunities for recognition, advancement, and responsibility is present,
they tend to motivate employees to improve their productivity. The workers may seek out
new and creative ways to accomplish their goals. If these are not met, they may begin to ask
for more maintenance factors. Organizations need to consider implementing time-proven
motivation strategies that are critical to employee engagement. Motivation through job
design provide rewards such as a sense of achievement, challenge, variety, and personal
growth. Motivation through incentives is used to improve quality, reduce accidents,
increase sales, improve attendance, speed up production, and improve customer
satisfaction. Motivation through solicitation of employees’ ideas and solutions is a way to
engage workers and nurture innovation. Motivation through learning opportunities are
critical for individual growth and opportunity. Motivation through empowerment is for
employees to experience feelings of pride, self-expression, and ownership. Lastly,
motivation through other’s expectation is for their own self-fulfilling prophecy that would
motivate them. And for the part where employees would not feel the motivation is when
there’s anonymity, irrelevance, and mismeasurement in a job.
