The first known example appeared in our Auction 29, Lot 139, for
which I interpreted the words before the date as “bin muhammad”,
thus the patronymic after a name off flan. It is actually “âl
muhammad”, thus the last part of the ruler’s titulature “abu muslim
amir âl muhammad”. The theoretical type A-F209 does not exist,
and the date is AH130, not 137.

‘Ali b. Musa al-Rida, Imam of the Shi’ite faction, was named heir to
the caliphate as part of a failed attempt to reconcile the Sunni and
Shi’ite branches of Islam. Unfortunately, al-Rida died in AH203, and
it is believed that the posthumous issues of AH204-205 still citing
al-Rida may have been produced in hopes of finding an alternative
means of reuniting the Sunnis and Shi’ites.

The attribution to Mecca is now accepted, now that several
specimens are recorded on Zeno (2 different reverse dies, one
obverse die). All Ayyubid of Yemen coins struck AH627-634 were
actually issued by the first Rasulid ruler, al-Mansur ‘Umar I, who
received the patent from the Abbasid caliph in Baghdad to issue
coins in his own name in AH634, two years after this coin. It is
possible that these were struck at Mecca in connection with the
Rasulid request for the patent, or were struck in Yemen to present
