Introduction:
Sciatica nerve is the main nerve of the nervous system and it originates from the fourth
and fifth lumbar and the first, second and third sacral. It is the largest nerve in terms of length
and breadth. Its width measures upto 2 cm near its origin from the spinal cord (fig) and passing
through the thigh and divides into two parts just above the knee. One part passes through the
hind part of leg and the other passes through the inner side and reaches the foot near the ankle.
It controls many muscles of the lower legs and provides sensation to thighs, legs and feet.
Sciatica refers to that pain radiates along the path of this nerve-from the back into the buttock
and legs.

Causes of Sciatica:
Any condition that causes irritation or impingement on the sciatica nerve can cause the
pain associated with sciatica.
Symptoms:
Pain radiating from lower spine to buttock and down the back of the leg is the hall mark
of Sciatica. Sometimes it may feel like a jolt or electric shock. In addition, there may be numbness,
tingling sensation or muscles weakness along with nerve pathways. There is sometimes tense
and stiff abdomen noticed. Some patients suffered with loss of bladder or bowel control, which
require urgent medical help. These all symptoms very well rectified through varmam treatment.
Patients with spinal tumours, diabetes and Rheumatism are excluded in this study.

at third sitting. Once in two days verma therapy was manipulated. The following varma points
were given to all the patients of sciatica invariably
Poovadangal - To relieve entire pain in Sciatica. Feather touch with three fingers,
the middle finger only enters the existing gap where the one
division of Sciatica nerve is located and other one on the other
lateral side of anus. This will activate both Vil Narambu and Vil
Kalai Narambu, so as to relieve the pain in Sciatica.
Naaga Kaalam - To enhance all physical activities and is located between T2 and
T3 of Spinal column.
Porchai - As a pain killer to relieve pain and also to regulate varma energy
in the body.
Ulsoothiram - To relieve pain in Sciatica and energise the lower limbs.
The perfect manipulation of the above Varma points clearly relieve the Sciatica problem
and the following table reveal the results of the Sciatica patients. All of them relieved from
Sciatica except one lady of 45 age due to a small bend in the lumbar region. Every month she is
getting Varma therapy once in fifteen days. Mukkoottu Yennai is suggested to release the bend
but there is only slight improvement because of age of 45 and her overweight.
The table reveals the results of the Sciatica patients treated at Acugem House, Tirunelveli
during the year 2014.
