My 10 Sentences Reflection on the Influence and Impact of The
Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)
The Programme for International Student Assessment has
become the global tool used to compare the progress of educational systems. I realized how helpful it is because the goal of this program is to identify the areas of improvement especially in developing countries like the Philippines. Comparisons sometimes are beneficial especially in education because it helps each country to know its full potential of the citizens for economic development. For instance, the Philippines where K-12 is new and still examined. The Department of Education is eager to improve the quality of education after PISA showed last December 2019 because it is disappointing. The latest results revealed that the Philippines scored 353 in Mathematics; 357 in Science; and 340 in Reading. It highly shows that our country is low in ranking due to poor comprehension and lack of school facilities and resources. We were able to join this program last 2018 and it is a nice opportunity to examine our educational performances more. I do agree with what Secretary Leonor Briones stated that in PISA, we will be able to establish our baseline concerning global standards because it will be our turning point to aim more. Being complacent is an old school. K to 12 should review and be updated to improve the learning facilities; teachers and school heads should reskill and upskill their ability through a transformed development program; and the engagement of stakeholders for collaboration and a support system.
