DGT Distributed Generation Trip

Control System

Chapter 1: Introduction

Introduction

1.1 Overview
The DGT Distributed Generation Control System is a wireless communication system
designed to transfer Trip Status signals between a Utility’s substation or recloser site and
Distributed Generation locations. The DGT system supports point-to-multipoint, and point-
to-point (a point-to-point DGT network consists of one DGT-U unit, and one DGT-D unit)
communication over distances up to 30 miles and accommodates up to 6 Distributed
Generation locations. There are three main products in a DGT System, the DGT-U, DGT-D
and DGT-R.
DGT-U is used in all systems, that is, point-to-point systems (one DGT-U unit and one DGT-
D unit), and point-to-multipoint systems (one DGT-U unit, one DGT-R unit, one DGT-U/
Recloser unit (optional) and up to 7 individual DGT-D units). It is installed by a Utility at the
substation or recloser. It transfers trip signals to remote DG sites and receives status
notification back from each, after a trip operation has been completed.
DGT-R is a repeater unit used only in point-to-multipoint systems, and is installed by the
Utility at or near the Utility substation, to coordinate wireless communication between the
DGT-U/DGT-R and the DGT-D(s).
DGT-D is used in all systems (point-to-point and point-to-multipoint), and is installed at the
Distributed Generation site. It receives the trip signal over-the-air from the DGT-U and
outputs the status to the user’s breaker device. The DGT-D also accepts a connection from
the user’s breaker equipment that confirms the trip status back to the DGT-U.
At the core of all DGT units is a wireless DGT transceiver. The DGT transceivers are
frequency-hopping, spread-spectrum radios designed for operation from 902 to 928 MHz,
subject to specific regulatory constraints. The 902 to 928 MHz ISM band is license-free
throughout North America.. The DGT transceivers employ the latest Digital Signal
Processing (DSP) technology to provide highly reliable long distance communication.

In Figure 2, DGT-U units installed at the Utility Substation and Recloser sites continuously
monitor the trip status and transmit that status every 7 to 14 milliseconds to DGT-D units
installed at the Distributed Generation sites. At the DGT-D locations the trip status is wired
into breaker device. An auxiliary contact from the breaker is wired back into the DGT-D.
The DGT-D units continuously monitor the status of the auxiliary contact and transmit that
status every 28-56 milliseconds back to the DGT-U units constantly confirming current
status. All communication is coordinated through the DGT-R Unit in order to achieve
maximum range.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION OVERVIEW

If a trip condition is detected by the Utility’s equipment, the trip status is energized at the
DGT-U. When the DGT-D units receive the energized trip status, the output status will
disconnect the Breaker device at the Distributed Generation site. The status of auxiliary
contact from the breaker is also energized and transmitted back to the DGT-U thereby
confirming that the Trip has occurred.
The entire round trip time from trip initiation at the substation into the DGT-U, to
confirmation from the DGT-D, occurs in under 300 milliseconds. The integrity of the Trip
Status state is maintained through the use of a 32-bit CRC calculation. The CRC prevents
the erroneous or malicious manipulation of the Trip Status so that only true data is acted
upon. Additional security precautions ensure that only authorized DGT-D devices are able
to wireless achieve association with a Utility’s DGT-U and DGT-R devices, so that the
integrity of each DGT system is maintained.

1.1.3 Description of the DGT system units

The DGT-U, DGT-R and DGT-D, are completely packaged units that includes the
appropriate DGT radio transceiver, power supply, necessary input and output terminations,
antenna jumper cable and lightning protection contained in a weather resistant, pad
lockable enclosure. The only connections required are for primary power, the external
antenna cable, and wiring to the external equipment. All of these wiring connections are
made within the enclosure leaving no connections exposed to weather. DGT units are
designed to be installed in wall-mount or pole-mount configurations. All DGT components
are housed in a NEMA-approved enclosure measuring 13.75 inches high x 11.85 inches
wide x 6.5 inches deep (35cm x 30.1cm x 16.5cm).
There are internal variations in the components contained in a DGT-U, DGT-D or DGT-R.
These variations are shown in Figures 3 through 5

2.1.2 Installation Considerations

For a successful installation, careful thought must be given to selecting the proper site for
the DGT-D and its antenna system. The location must be able to support antenna
mounting at a height and in a direction that provides an unobstructed radio signal
transmission path to associated DGT sites.
The antenna must aim at the antenna located at your Utility’s DGT-R (or the Utility’s DGT-U
for point-to-point systems). The Utility will provide you with the direction and coordinates
to aim the antenna. In addition, the antenna must be at a suitable height to achieve radio
association with the Utility’s equipment. DGT-D equipment is offered with a number of
standard options for antenna feedline lengths. Select the feedline length necessary to
connect the Yagi antenna to the DGT Unit.
Radio signals travel primarily by line-of-sight, and obstructions between the transmitting
and receiving devices will affect system performance. If you are not familiar with the
effects of terrain and other obstructions on radio transmission, please contact Multilin for
information on arranging a Radio Path Analysis or Site Survey. In addition, the information
below will provide helpful background.
TERRAIN AND SIGNAL STRENGTH
A line-of-sight transmission path between the DGT-D sites is highly desirable and provides
the most reliable communications link. A line-of-sight path is achieved by mounting the
antenna on a tower, pole or other elevated structure that raises it to a height sufficient to
clear surrounding terrain and other obstructions.

2–2 www.protectionrelay.ir
DGT DISTRIBUTED GENERATION TRIP CONTROL SYSTEM – INSTRUCTION MANUAL
http://protectionrelay.ir
CHAPTER 2: INSTALLATION MECHANICAL INSTALLATION

The importance of a clear transmission path relates closely to the distance between the
DGT-U and the Utility’s DGT-R. If that distance is limited, for example up to 3 miles (4.8 km),
then some obstructions in the communications path can usually be tolerated with minimal
impact. For longer distances, any substantial obstruction in the communications path
could compromise performance or block communications entirely.
CONDUCTING A SITE SURVEY
There must be no doubt about the radio path and antenna height needed for your DGT site
to associate with other DGT stations. Planning and testing is necessary before a
permanent installation is begun. This is done through a path analysis and site survey
conducted by a qualified professional. A site survey gathers actual site information and
summarizes the installation factors specific to a given site. A computer path analysis
based upon the latitude and longitude coordinates of the DGT site assesses factors such
as terrain, distance, transmitter power, and receiver sensitivity, which are necessary to
predict the performance of the DGT installation.

2.1.3 Mounting the enclosure

There are two basic mounting arrangements for the DGT: wall mount or pole mount.
Methods for mounting the unit in both of these configurations follow. When planning the
installation, refer to the Dimensions section above, which shows the mounting dimensions
of the DGT Assembly.
The steps below describe mounting of the DGT unit to a wall or other flat surface. Ordinary
wood screws (with flat washers) can be used for mounting to a wooden surface. If it is to be
mounted to a drywall, masonry or other non-wooden surface, suitable fasteners will be
required that can support the weight of the unit.
WALL MOUNTING
To wall mount the unit, follow these instructions
1. Hold the unit up to the wall in the desired mounting position. Have an assistant mark
the four mounting holes (see Dimensions section above) with a pencil or marker.
2. Prepare the mounting surface for the fasteners to be used. (If using lag screws, a small
pilot hole at each mark will allow easier starting of the screw.)
3. Insert the 4 mounting screws and tighten them securely. Do not over-tighten.
POLE MOUNTING
Standard pole mounting requires the use of two pole-mount adapters (P/N 82-1743A01).
These brackets must first be bolted to the DGT enclosure. The complete assembly can then
be mounted to a wooden utility pole with two lag screws or with two long bolts that extend
through the pole. (Threaded rod can also be used for through-the-pole mounting.) In either
case, it is important to use flat washers with the attaching hardware (fasteners are not
supplied).
To pole mount the unit, follow these instructions:
1. Attach the two pole-mount adapter brackets to the DGT enclosure with four 10-32
screws. The screws must be no longer than 3/8" (9.5 mm). Longer screws will damage
the enclosure
2. With the help of an assistant, position the DGT enclosure on the pole at the desired
mounting point.
3. Install the attaching hardware (with flat washers) in the center hole of the two
brackets.
4. Tighten the fasteners securely, but do not over-tighten.

2.2 Electrical installation

This section describes the connection of external cabling to the DGT-D Assembly. The
figures below show overall views of the connection points for all external cabling and
wiring. Subsequent illustrations show more detailed views of power connections as
required.
Route the power and I/O signal wiring through the weathertight bushing on the bottom of
the enclosure. Do not tighten it until all cabling has been installed. All user connections for
power and signal wiring are made to the terminal block.

CHAPTER 2: INSTALLATION ANTENNA AND FEEDLINE INSTALLATION

2.3 Antenna and feedline installation

DGT units are ordered with an antenna and feedline package, ready for installation at the
station site. A number of standard feedline lengths are available. The length necessary to
connect the station antenna to the DGT is determined during the site survey.
Antennas must be mounted in a location providing an unobstructed radio signal path to
associated stations. Radio signals at UHF travel primarily by line-of-sight, and obstructions
between the transmitting and receiving devices will affect system performance. A line-of-
sight path is achieved by mounting the DGT antenna on a pole, tower, or other elevated
structure that raises it to a height sufficient to clear surrounding terrain and other
obstructions.
The importance of a clear transmission path relates closely to the distance between DGT
units. If that distance is limited, for example up to 4.8 km (3 miles), then some obstructions
in the communications path can usually be tolerated with minimal impact. For longer
distances, any substantial obstruction in the communications path could compromise
performance or block communications entirely. If you are not familiar with the effects of
terrain and other obstructions on radio transmission, please contact Multilin for
information on arranging a Radio Path Analysis or Site Survey
ANTENNA INSTALLATION - DGT-U and DGT-D
The antenna supplied with DGT-D and DGT-U units is a directional Yagi type that must be
properly aimed at the DGT-R site with which it will communicate.
Follow these steps to install the antenna at DGT-D and DGT-U sites:
1. Mount the antenna securely to a pole or other support structure with the hardware
provided.
2. Aim the antenna directly at the DGT-R site with which the unit will communicate. (The
direction of maximum transmission/reception is opposite the antenna mounting
bracket).
3. Secure the coaxial cable to the mounting pole and route it to the DGT enclosure.
4. Connect the antenna cable to the Type-N connector at the bottom of the DGT
enclosure. Tighten the connector securely.
ANTENNA INSTALLATION - DGT-R (Point-to-Multipoint systems only)
DGT-R (Repeater) units are furnished with an omni-directional antenna that does not
require aiming. However, it is still important to mount the antenna at a height that allows
an unobstructed path to the stations it will serve. Omni-directional antennas are typically
mounted to a pole.
Follow these steps to install the antenna at DGT-R sites:
1. Secure the antenna to the mounting pole or other support structure with the
hardware provided.
2. Connect a low-loss coaxial cable to the antenna and tighten the connector securely.
3. Secure the coaxial cable to the mounting pole and route it to the DGT enclosure.
4. Connect the antenna cable to the Type-N connector at the bottom of the DGT
enclosure. Tighten the connector securely.

2.3.1 Maintaining regulatory compliance (RF output power)

The transceiver is normally supplied from the factory set for a nominal +30 dBm RF power
output; this is the maximum transmitter output power allowed under FCC/IC rules. The
power must be decreased from this level if the antenna system gain exceeds 6 dBi. The

maximum allowable RF level from the transceiver is dependent on the gain of the antenna
and feedline loss. In all cases, the maximum EIRP from the antenna must not exceed 36
dBm. Contact GE Multilin if assistance is required in determining the maximum output
power setting.
SAFETY / EARTH GROUNDING
DGT equipment is equipped with an internal surge suppression module to protect against
nearby lightning discharges or spikes on the antenna feedline. To minimize the chances of
lightning and surge damage, a good safety ground is required. This ground must bond the
antenna system, the DGT unit, power supply, and all connected data equipment to a
single-point ground.
Equipment grounds should be bonded together and connected to the facility’s main
ground system for primary power. The objective is to create a single-point ground system,
keeping all grounds leads as short as possible.

The EnerVista Setup program for all the DGT units - DGT-U, DGT-U (Recloser), DGT-R, and
DGT-D (1 to 7 units) - allows the Utility to handle associated DGT information both on-line
and offline. In the latter case, information is uploaded to the specific DGT unit at the user’s
convenience. Using EnerVista, the Utility can create the appropriate Settings Files for the
DGT-U, DGT-R, and DGT-D units. One DGT-U unit is used for each single DGT network.
Summarizing: Each DGT (point -to-multipoint) network consists of one DGT-U unit, one
DGT-R unit, one DGT-U/Recloser unit (optional) and up to 7 individual DGT-D units. Each
DGT (point-to-point) network consists of one DGT-U unit and one DGT-D unit.

As we have reached this point we have created an System file with all the appropriate
information and now we are ready to go further for configuring DGT System -
generate Settings files (based on the System file) and upload them to the appropriate
devices.

4.2.3 DGT-Utility configuration - Creating and uploading a Settings

File
The Settings File is part of the whole DGT System configuration, and is related to a
dedicated device within the system. The important things to know about the Settings File
are:
• The Settings File for a particular device should be generated or updated before being
uploaded to the device.
• The Settings File can be generated automatically (the system will do it for you) or
manually (by user request). In the latter case, the user can specify explicitly which file
name he/she wants to assign to it.
• Each Settings File contains the device number in an encrypted format, so this file can
be correctly uploaded to the device only with the exact same number. If not, an error
message will appear during the upload process.
To create Settings Files, follow the steps below:

www.protectionrelay.ir

http://protectionrelay.ir
ENERVISTA DGT-UTILITY SETUP SOFTWARE CHAPTER 4: SOFTWARE

1. As indicated in the previous section, open the DGT Utility Setup program:

2. In the Offline window, find the System File you have just created.

3. Now lets invesigate the content of the folder.

4. As you can see there are two items – the System File itself and an additional subfolder
with the exact the same name as a System File (minus extension) – “Substation_1” in
our scenario. If you open the subfolder you will see a number of files placed inside.

4–18 www.protectionrelay.ir
DGT DISTRIBUTED GENERATION TRIP CONTROL SYSTEM – INSTRUCTION MANUAL
http://protectionrelay.ir
CHAPTER 4: SOFTWARE ENERVISTA DGT-UTILITY SETUP SOFTWARE

Let’s take a closer look over the name convention which is in use when the files are
created automatically. You will notice that the file name consists of 2 parts: 1
character (letter or digit and a number separated by underscore. Please note that this
number is a device serial number (which we input before) and the first character
specifies the type of the device. There are other conventions currently in use, as
follows:
– ‘r’ – states for DGT-R Repeater
– ‘1’ – states for DGT-U Primary
– ‘2’ – states for DGT-U Recloser (if any)
– ‘3’ to ‘9’ – states for DGT-D device assigned to DGT-U Primary site (the formula is:
n = Site number + 2).
In our example we can easily see that file “3_1729024.hkf” has been created for the
device DGT-D assigned to site 1 of DGT-U Primary and its serial number is 1729024.
If the user makes any significant changes to the device description (significant means any
NOTE:

changes that affect the information uploaded to the device), the auto–generated Settings
NOTE Files will be edited automatically and the appropriate message will appear.

5. The other way to create a Settings File for the particular device is to do it manually. In
such case we select the device in the System File node first, right-mouse click and
from the drop-down menu, select the command Generate Settings File (this can also
be done using the Offline window):

6. You will then be asked to provide a file name and location for the new Settings File you
are about to create. Let’s type something like “Test_DGT_D_Device_Site1,” then press
the Save button:

It’s always a good idea for the user to create “significant” file names.
NOTE:

NOTE So we now have one extra file in the default System Files folder:

The final stage of the configuration of the DGT System is to upload the newly entered
/ modified data to the appropriate Device(s). In this situation, the term “upload”
means to set the internal device’s variables with the appropriate values specified in
the System File. For the current version of the hardware, we have only one way to do
this: use a COM port connection. So as we have a DGT device connected via a COM
port to a PC, with correctly installed DGT-Utility or DGT-DG software, and we have a
correctly configured System File (or, at least, a set of appropriate Settings Files), we
can start the uploading process.

CHAPTER 4: SOFTWARE ENERVISTA DGT-UTILITY SETUP SOFTWARE

7. Use the Quick Connect button, located just above the Online window, to "find" each of
the DGT units (DGT-U, DGT-R, and DGT-D) to which you are connected. Each DGT unit
is connected to your COM port using a single removable cable. Select the appropriate
COM port and press the Connect button.

Information on all connected DGT units will appear in the online window as shown below:

As we can see, the type of the device is “DGT-U Primary” and the serial number is: 1729022.
NOTE:

If we are going to upload an auto-generated Settings File, the correct file name should be
NOTE “1_1729022.hkf” (see the previous section for details).

8. To upload the generated Settings File to the respective device, click on Send Settings
File in the Online Menu, or select Online from the Main Menu, then select Send File to
Device.
9. From the window that appears, select the Settings File you want to send, then click the
Open button. You will be asked to confirm the action:

www.protectionrelay.ir

http://protectionrelay.ir
ENERVISTA DGT-UTILITY SETUP SOFTWARE CHAPTER 4: SOFTWARE

Press the Yes button and the uploading will begin. This process normally takes 20-30
seconds. After it's done, and if the Settings File has been successfully accepted by the
device, you will get another message:

Information in the Online window will be updated accordingly.

Otherwise you will get an error message:

10. The other way to upload to the device is to do this directly, without using an
intermediate Settings File. In the Offline window you can select the desired device’s
node, then select the Send to Online Device command from the context menu (right
mouse click):

11. There are some extra features in the Online Window that you may find quite useful
when dealing with the DGT devices:
• Diagnostic – gets current settings from the device. These settings can be stored in a
text file and, in case of necessary, sent later to the technical support team.
• Status – gets the synchronization status of the device.
• Logout – forces system to logout.
12. If you double-click upon the Diagnostics node in the Online window, the next window
will appear:

4–22 www.protectionrelay.ir

http://protectionrelay.ir
CHAPTER 4: SOFTWARE ENERVISTA DGT-UTILITY SETUP SOFTWARE

13. If a number of changes have been made to Settings Files, send all Settings Files send
ALL the Settings Files to the devices to ensure that the devices are operating using the
latest file updates.
14. If you click on Diagnostics, this window will appear:

Pressing the Save to File button saves the Diagnostics information in a text file, which,
if necessary, can be sent to a technical support team for analysis.
15. If you click on Status, this window will appear:

The Status window continuously shows the synchronization state of the DGT system.
The status of the system is updated continuously every 5 seconds.
16. To log out of EnerVista DGT-Utility. Click on Logout. Once you log out, you have to
press the Quick Connect button to log back in. This feature is generally used when a
situation arises that necessitates a formal logout. Any accidental disruption
(computer breakdown for example) of the system will NOT log you out of the system; it
will still be active after the disruption is corrected. Manual logout avoids this. Under
normal operating conditions, the system will automatically log out when it has been
inactive for 5 minutes (unchangeable default).
