European foreword
This document (FprEN 15316-4-8:2016) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 228
“Heating systems and water based cooling systems in buildings”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the
European Free Trade Association.
Introduction
This European Standard is part of a series of standards aiming at international harmonization of the
methodology for the assessment of the energy performance of buildings, called "set of EPB standards".
All EPB standards follow specific rules to ensure overall consistency, unambiguity and transparency.
All EPB standards provide a certain flexibility with regard to the methods, the required input data and
references to other EPB standards, by the introduction of a normative template in Annex A and Annex B
with informative default choices.
For the correct use of this standard, a normative template is given in Annex A to specify these choices.
Informative default choices are provided in Annex B.
The main target group of this standard are all the users of the set of EPB standards (e.g. architects,
engineers, regulators, product manufacturers and suppliers, software developers, etc.).
Use by or for regulators: In case the standard is used in the context of national or regional legal
requirements, mandatory choices may be given at national or regional level for such specific
applications. These choices (either the informative default choices from Annex B or choices adapted to
national / regional needs, but in any case following the template of this Annex A) can be made available
as national annex or as separate (e.g. legal) document (national data sheet).
NOTE 1 So in this case:
— the individual user will apply the standard to assess the energy performance of a building, and
thereby use the choices made by the regulators,.
Topics addressed in this standard can be subject to public regulation. Public regulation on the same
topics can override the default values in Annex B of this standard. Public regulation on the same topics
can even, for certain applications, override the use of this standard. Legal requirements and choices are
in general not published in standards but in legal documents. In order to avoid double publications and
difficult updating of double documents, a national annex may refer to the legal texts where national
choices have been made by public authorities. Different national annexes or national data sheets are
possible, for different applications.
It is expected, if the default values, choices and references to other EPB standards in Annex B are not
followed due to national regulations, policy or traditions, that:
— national or regional authorities prepare data sheets containing the choices and national or regional
values, according to the model in Annex A. In this case the national annex (e.g. NA) refers to this
text;
— or, by default, the national standards body will consider the possibility to add or include a national
annex in agreement with the template of Annex A, in accordance to the legal documents that give
national or regional values and choices.
Further target groups are users of the voluntary common European Union certification scheme for the
energy performance of non-residential buildings (EPBD art.11.9) and any other Pan EU parties wanting
to motivate their assumptions by classifying the building energy performance for a dedicated building
stock
More information is provided in the Technical Report accompanying this standard (prCEN/TR 15316-6-
9).
— methods for calculation of the design heat loss and heat loads;
Heating systems also include the effect of attached systems such as hot water production systems.
All these standards are systems standards, i.e. they are based on requirements addressed to the system
as a whole and not dealing with requirements to the products within the system.
Where possible, reference is made to other European or International Standards, a. o. product
standards. However, use of products complying with relevant product standards is no guarantee of
compliance with the system requirements.
This standard presents methods to take into account the energy performance of heat generation
systems based on local air heaters, radiant heaters and stoves. The calculation is based on the
performance characteristics of the products given in product standards and on other characteristics
required to evaluate the performance of the products as included in the system.
This standard covers only the heat generation function of air heaters even though air heaters, as
devices, also emit heat and include devices for space heating control. The emission and control function
and the related losses are covered by module M3-5.
This standard is meant to be used as a module within the EN EPB package of standards. Specification of
the connection of this standard with other calculation modules are given in module M3-1 and
prEN ISO 52000-1.
Default references to EPB standards other than prEN ISO 52000-1 are identified by the EPB module
code number and given in Annex A (normative template) and Annex B (informative default choice).
NOTE 2 Example of EPB module code number: M5–5, or M5–5.1 (if module M5–5 is subdivided), or M5–5/1 (if
reference to a specific clause of the standard covering M5–5.
1 Scope
This European Standard is part of a series of standards on the method for calculation of system energy
requirements and system efficiencies.
The scope of this specific part is to standardize the:
— required inputs;
— calculation method;
— resulting outputs,
— overhead radiant heating systems for non-domestic use, including control; and
This standard does not apply to heating systems that utilize water as a heat transfer medium.
Other heat generation systems such as boilers, heat pumps and others are covered in other sub modules
of M3-8.
Table 1 shows the relative position of this standard within the set of EPB standards in the context of the
modular structure as set out in prEN ISO 52000-1.
NOTE 1 In prCEN ISO/TR 52000-2 the same table can be found, with, for each module, the numbers of the
relevant EPB standards and accompanying technical reports that are published or in preparation.
NOTE 2 The modules represent EPB standards, although one EPB standard may cover more than one module
and one module may be covered by more than one EPB standard, for instance a simplified and a detailed method
respectively. See also Clause 2 and Tables A.1 and B.1.

This procedure is suitable for dynamic simulations.
6.4.2 Time with burner ON and OFF
The time with the burner on tlrh,ON (fuel valve open, pre- and post-ventilation are not considered) is
given by:
t lrh;ON β lrh;cmb ⋅ t lrh;gen
= (11)
where
tlrh,gen is the total time of generator operation (available to supply heat as demanded by the
control);
βlrh,cmb is the load factor calculated according to 6.4.5.3.
the time with the burner OFF tlrh;OFF is given by:
t lrh;OFF
= t lrh;gen − t lrh;ON (12)
The total losses when the burner is ON αON are given by:
α lrh;ON= α lrh;ch;on;corr + α lrh;vent;on + α lrh;env;corr − α lrh;cond (13)
where
αlrh;ch,on,corr is the actual specific heat losses through the chimney with the burner on, calculated
according to 6.4.3.3;
αlrh,vent,ON is the induced ventilation heat losses with burner ON, calculated according to 6.4.3.4;
αlrh,env,corr is the corrected envelope losses, calculated according to 6.4.3.5;
αlrh, cond is the heat recovery from condensation, calculated according to 6.4.3.6.
NOTE 1 For standard flued heaters (not condensing) installed inside the heated space (overhead radiant tube
heaters and air heaters) αlrh;ON = αlrh;ch;on;corr (αlrh;vent;on = 0 ; αlrh;gen;env;corr = 0 ; αlrh;cond = 0).
if the burner is installed outside the heated space, then αlrh;gen;env;corr are not 0.
NOTE 2 For unflued heaters (overhead luminous heaters and overhead radiant tube heaters) installed inside
the heated space αON = αlrh;vent;on (αlrh;ch,on,corr = 0 ; αlrh;gen,env,corr = 0 ; αlrh;cond = 0).
The total losses when the burner is OFF αlrh,OFF are given by:
α lrh
= ,OFF α lrh, plt + α lrh,vent ,OFF (14)
where
αlrh,vent,OFF is the induced ventilation heat losses with burner OFF, calculated according to
6.4.3.4;
αlrh,plt is the pilot burner losses, calculated according to 6.3.1.2.11.
NOTE 1 Except for heaters with permanent pilot flame αplt = 0.
NOTE 2: For all standard unflued heaters with ventilation of air/flue interlocked with the burner αvent,OFF = 0.
NOTE 3 Envelope losses are considered 0 during burner OFF time because there is no significant heat
accumulation in the heater.
Actual specific heat losses through the chimney with the burner on αlrh,ch,on,corr are given by:
( )
n
α lrh,ch,on,corr =α lrh,ch,on + θ lrh,gen,air − θ lrh,gen,air,test ⋅ f lrh,corr,ch,on ⋅ β lrh,cmb
lrh,ch,on
(15)
where
θlrh,gen,air,test is the room temperature when test has been conducted, see 6.3.1.2.5;
θlrh,gen,air is the value depending on the type of appliance
— for radiant heaters, air temperature of the room where the appliance is located;
— for an air heater, temperature of supply air to the main blower which can be
internal or external temperature;
— for air heaters located in the heated room, θgen,air is the room set temperature;
— when different room temperatures occur within the calculation step, calculation
shall be done with the time averaged temperature;
flrh,corr,ch,on is the correction factor for αlrh,ch,on. See 6.3.1.2.4;
nlrh,ch,on is the exponent for the load factor βlrh,cmb. See 6.3.1.2.6.
βlrh;cmb is the load factor.
NOTE βlrh;cmb raised to nch,on takes into account the reduction of losses with high intermittencies, due to a
lower average temperature of the flue gas (higher efficiency at start). An increasing value of nch,on corresponds to a
higher value of cmass,on, defined as the specific mass of the heat exchange surface between flue gas and air per kW
nominal power.
Type A appliances require specific ventilation to supply combustion air and to evacuate flue gases.
Induced ventilation heat losses αlrh,vent are calculated only for type A appliances.
αlrh,vent is the specific ventilation loss expressed as a percentage of nominal heat input, given by:
Φ lrh,vent
α lrh,vent = (16)
Φ lrh,cmb ,Pn
where
V'lrh,vent is the required specific ventilation flow rate (m3/h per kW installed) determined
according to EN 13410;
Фlrh,cmb,Pn is the full load nominal thermal input of the heater;
cp,air is the specific heat capacity of the air exiting the building, see 6.3.4 (Wh/m3 K);
ϑlrh;air:exh is the average temperature of the ventilation air exiting the building;
ϑext is the average external air temperature in the calculation step.
The temperature of the air/flue-mixture exiting the building near the roof ϑlrh;air;exh is given by:
ϑ lrh;air ;exh
= ϑ int − ∆ϑ lrh;rad + H lrh ⋅∇ϑ int;H (18)
where
ϑint is the average internal air temperature in the calculation step;
Δϑlrh;rad is the temperature difference inside the building between room (set-point) and air
temperature (building heated with radiant heaters);
Hlrh is the height of the installation room of the heater;
∇ϑint;H is the vertical gradient of internal temperature in °C/m.
NOTE Formula (18) takes into account (∇ϑint;H) the effect of vertical temperature gradient in high buildings on
additional losses for the ventilation required for devices discharging the flue into the ambient air. It takes also into
account (Δϑlrh;rad) the fact that the air temperature near the floor (area where people are staying or working) may
be lower than the required room temperature when radiant heater are used. The temperature gradient over the
height has a characteristic value depending on the heating emission system.
For standard type A systems with ventilation provided by fans which are interlocked to the burner(s)
(LRH_VENT = LRH_VENT_INTERLOCK) then:
α lrh;vent ;ON = α lrh;vent (19)
If the ventilation fan is not interlocked to the burner (LRH_VENT = LRH_VENT_YES) then:
α lrh;vent ;on = α lrh;vent (21)
NOTE the induced ventilation rate is assumed constant for on/off appliances, high-low appliances and
modulating appliances.
Corrected envelope losses αlrh,env,corr take into account the location of the generator and are given by:
α lrh,en⋅
= ,corr k lrh,en⋅ ⋅ α lrh,en⋅ (25)
where
klrh,env is the correction factor of envelope losses taking into account heater location defined in
6.3.2.1.3.
6.4.3.6 Heat recovery from condensation αlrh,cond
For condensing appliances, if heat recovery from condensation αlrh,cond is calculated with:
α lrh
= ,cond η lrh,cmb − 100 (26)
where
ηlrh,cmb is the combustion efficiency on the net calorific value of the fuel defined in 6.3.1.2.12.
If ηlrh;cmb < = 100 then αlrh;cond = 0.
6.4.4 Recovered auxiliary energy
The auxiliary energy for the generator related to time when burner on Wlrh,br is calculated by:
Wlrh;br =
Φ lrh;aux ;br ⋅ t lrh;ON (27)
where
Φlrh,aux,br is the electrical power of the auxiliary equipment determined according to 6.3.1.2.7
tlrh,ON is the time with the burner ON.
The recovered auxiliary energy related to burner on Qlrh,br;rh is given by:

according to 6.3.1.2.8.
tlrh;gen is the heater operation time within the calculation step (tON+tOFF)
The recovered auxiliary energy related to tgen Qlrh;blw;rh is given by:
Q lrh=
;blw ;rh Wlrh;blw ⋅ k lrh;aux ;rh (30)
where
Φlrh,aux,sby is the electrical power of the auxiliary equipment during stand-by, determined
according to 6.3.1.2.9.
tlrh;gen is the heater operation time within the calculation step (tON+tOFF)
tlrh,ON is the time with the burner ON.
The recovered stand-by auxiliary energy Qlrh;sby;rh is given by:
Q lrh=
;sby ;rh W lrh;sby ⋅ k lrh;aux ;rh (32)
NOTE Stand-by auxiliary power is part of the data set of local heaters included in lot 20 of Ecodesign.
The maximum energy output QH,gen,out,max during the calculation interval t is given by:
α
Φ lrh;cmb;Pn ⋅ 1 − lrh;ON
Q H ; gen;out ;max = ⋅ t gen + Q lrh;aux ;br ;rh + Q lrh;aux ;blw ;rh (33)
100
where
Φlrh;cmb;Pn is the full load thermal input defined in 6.3.1.2.2;
αlrh;ON are the total losses when the burner is ON at maximum power αlrh;ON;Pn defined in
6.4.3.1;

assuming full load operation (e.g. βlrh;cmb = 1,0 or tlrh;ON = tgen);.
NOTE Stand-by auxiliary energy is not considered because at full load there will be no stand-by.
The required energy output QH,gen,out,req in the calculation step shall be calculated according to M3-1/1.
If the required output QH,gen,out,req exceeds the maximum available output QH,gen,out,max then the actual heat
output QH,gen,out is given by:
Q H;gen;out = Q H;gen;out;max (34)
Otherwise
Q H;gen;out = Q H;gen;out;req (35)
The actual load factor βlrh;cmb is calculated according to the following procedure.
1. Calculate a first value of βlrh;cmb with:
Q H ; gen;out
β cmb = (36)
Φ lrh;cmb;Pn ⋅ t lrh; gen
2. calculate αlrh;ON and αlrh;OFF according to Formula (11) and Formula (12).
3. Calculate Qlrh;br;rh, Qlrh;blw;rh and Qlrh;sby;rh according to Formula (28), (30) and (32).
4. Calculate a new load factor βlrh;cmb with:
5. If any of the values in the right hand side of Formula (38) is dependend on βlrh;cmb, repeat the

If the required output QH,gen,out,req exceeds the maximum available output QH,gen,out,max then:
Otherwise
Q H;gen;out = Q H;gen;out;req (59)
The procedure begins following a procedure similar to that described in 6.4.5.3 for on-off generators:
1. Calculate QH,gen,out (heat to be supplied by the generator) according to 7.4.6.2;
2. Calculate a first value of βlrh;cmb;min with:
Q H ; gen;out
β lrh;cmb;min = (60)

7. If any of the values in Formula (32) is dependent on βlrh;cmb,min, repeat the calculation from step 3
until the difference in absolute value between the old and new βlrh;cmb,min is lower than 0,001.
If the load factor βlrh;cmb,min converges to a value which is not greater than 1 (heater operates in ON-OFF
mode), then:

5. Calculate a first value of Φlrh;cmb;avg with:
Q H ; gen;out
Φ lrh;cmb;avg = (65)
t lrh; gen
NOTE The range of the value of the modulation factor βlrh;mod is from 0 to 1 when the average power Φlrh;cmb;avg
changes from Φlrh;cmb;Pmin to Φlrh;cmb;Pmax.
7. Calculate the recovered auxiliary energy at average power Qlrh;br;rh;avg and Qlrh;blw;rh;avg with:
( )
= Q lrh;br;rh;Pmin + Q lrh;br;rh − Q lrh;br;rh;Pmin ⋅ β lrh;mod
Q lrh;br;rh;a⋅g (67)
( )
= Q lrh;blw;rh;Pmin + Q lrh;blw;rh − Q lrh;blw;rh;Pmin ⋅ β lrh;mod
Q lrh;blw;rh;a⋅g (68)
10. Repeat steps from 6 to 9 until the difference in absolute value between the old and new βlrh;mod is
lower than 0,001.
When convergence is achieved, then
— the fuel input EH,gen,in is given by:
E H,gen,in =
Φ lrh;cmb;a⋅g ⋅ t lrh;gen (71)
( )
= Wlrh;br ;Pmin + Wlrh;blw ;Pmin + Wlrh;br + Wlrh;blw − Wlrh;br ;Pmin − Wlrh;blw ;Pmin ⋅ β lrh;mod (72)
W( , gen, aux
— There are no recoverable heat losses, since recovery has been taken into account as a reduction of
heat losses through the generator envelope:
Q H,gen,ls,rbl = 0 (73)
The output data and the calculation method for stoves and local heaters are identical to those defined in
Clause 6 for devices operating in ON/OFF mode and in Clause 7 for devices running in high-low or
modulating mode- For the input data, the following additional specifications applies:

— for stoves and local heaters with a connection to a water based heating system
(LRH_WCONN = LRH_WCONN_YES), the additional specifications given in Clause 8.3 apply.
8.2 Stoves and local heaters without connection to a water based heating system
8.2.1 Output data
The output data are the same defined in 6.1 for on/off heaters.
8.2.2 Input data
If the full load power output Фlrh,out,Pn and the efficiency ηlrh,cmb are declared instead of the thermal input,
then the full load thermal input Фlrh,cmb,Pn is given by:
Φ lrh;out ;Pn
Φ lrh;cmb;Pn = (74)
η lrh;cmb
where
Фlrh,out,Pn is the power output (heat released to the installation room) declared by the
manufacturer;
ηlrh;cmb is the efficiency declared by the manufacturer. If no value from the manufacturer is
available, default values are given in Table B.16.
8.2.2.2 Losses through the chimney with burner ON
If the efficiency ηlrh,cmb is declared by the manufacturer instead of the losses through the chimney with
burner on αlrh;ch;ON, then αlrh,ch;ON is calculated with:
α lrh;ch;ON
= 100 −η lrh,cmb (75)
α lrh;ch;ON ;Pmin
= 100 − η lrh,cmb;Pmin (76)
where
ηlrh,cmb is the combustion efficiency on the net calorific value.
If αlrh;ch;ON < = 0 then αlrh;ch;ON = 0.
If the stove or local heater is equipped with a dedicated system to generate and distribute heated air in
the neighbouring rooms, the zone that is considered heated by the stove or local heater may include
these rooms, provided the available power is enough.
8.2.4 Data input for solid fuel local heaters included in Lot 20 of Ecodesign regulation
For solid fuel local heaters conforming to prEN 16510-1, prEN 16510-2-1, prEN 16510-2-2 and
prEN 16510-2-6, informative Annex C gives the equivalence between the data included in the
harmonized data-sheet according to the draft Ecodesign regulation and the input data required for the
application of this standard.
8.3 Stoves and local heaters with a connection to a water based heating system
8.3.1 General
The connection to a water based heating system consists in a heat exchanger providing heat QH;gen;out;w
to a water based circuit, as shown in Figure 1.
This calculation method is based on the assumption that the stove operation is controlled according to
the installation room heating requirement (QH;gen;out;air). The heat to the water system is not controlled
independently and is assumed to be proportional to the heat released to the installation room.
8.3.2 Output data
In addition to the output data for on/off heaters given in 6.1, the additional output data listed in Table 9
is calculated.
Table 10 — Additional output data for stoves connected with a water based heating system
Intended
Validity
Description Symbol Unit destination
interval
module
Actual energy output to water 0 to ∞
QH;gen;out;w kWh M3–1/2
during calculation interval
For heaters connected to a water based heating system, the following additional data:
— rated output power to the air Φlrh;out;air;
shall be the value declared by the manufacturer according to standards EN 13240, EN 13229 or
EN 14785.
Table 11 — Additional input data for heaters connected to a water based heating system
For the calculation of the load factor based on output to air, the efficiency to air ηlrh;cmb;air is given by
Φ lrh;out ;air
η lrh;cmb;Pn;air = (78)
Φ lrh;cmb;Pn
and the losses to the chimney with burner on αlrh;ch;ON are given by:
α lrh;ch;ON
= 100 −η lrh;cmb;Pn;air (79)
For stoves with a connection to a water based heating system, the calculation method defined in
Clause 6 (on/off heaters) is used with the following additional specifications.
— The total input power Фlrh,cmb,Pn and the efficiency to air ηlrh;cmb;air are used.
— No condensation is assumed.
— If the stove is equipped with a dedicated system to generate and distribute heated air in the
neighbouring rooms, the zone that is considered heated by the stove may include this rooms,
provided the available power is enough.
After the calculation is performed, the available heat to the water QH;gen;out;w is calculated as:
Φ lrh;out ;w
Q
= H ; gen;out ;w Q H ; gen;out ;air ⋅ (80)
Φ lrh;out ;air
For stoves and local heaters with automatic feed control and a connection to a water based heating
system, the maximum load factor βlrh;cmb;max is given by:
Q ( ; gen;out
β lrh;cmb;max = (81)
(
t gnr ⋅η lrh;cmb ⋅ Φ lrh;out ;w + Φ lrh;out ;air )
NOTE this is an approximate evaluation of the fact that the stove or local heater will stop either if the air or
the water output exceed the respective requirement. The limitation of the output to air is incorporated in the
calculation method. An evaluation of the required output reduction in case of excess production of heat for the
water based heating system would require iteration. This approximation stays on the safe side. The admissible
heat output to the water will be at least the integration required in the installation room, hence the limitation
based on the total output (air + water) to the installation room.

Annex A
(normative)
A.1 Introduction
The template in Annex A to this standard shall be used to specify the choices between methods, the
required input data and references to other standards.
NOTE 1 Following this template is not enough to guarantee consistency of data.
NOTE 2 Informative default choices are provided in Annex B. Alternative values and choices can be imposed by
national / regional regulations. If the default values and choices of Annex B are not adopted because of the
national / regional regulations, policies or national traditions, it is expected that:
— national or regional authorities prepare data sheets containing the national or regional values and
choices, in line with the template in Annex A; or
— by default, the national standards body will add or include a national annex (Annex NA) to this
standard, in line with the template in Annex A, giving national or regional values and choices in
accordance with their legal documents.
NOTE 3 The template in Annex A is applicable to different applications (e.g. the design of a new building,
certification of a new building, renovation of an existing building and certification of an existing building) and for
different types of buildings (e.g. small or simple buildings and large or complex buildings). A distinction in values
and choices for different applications or building types could be made:
— by adding columns or rows (one for each application), if the template allows;
— by including more than one version of a Table (one for each application), numbered consecutively
as a, b, c, to For example: Table NA.3a, Table NA.3b.
— by developing different national / regional data sheets for the same standard. In case of a national
annex to the standard these will be consecutively numbered (Annex NA, Annex NB, Annex NC, to).
NOTE 4 In the section “Introduction” of a national / regional data sheet information can be added, for example
about the applicable national / regional regulations.
NOTE 5 For certain input values to be acquired by the user, a data sheet following the template of Annex A,
could contain a reference to national procedures for assessing the needed input data. For instance, reference to a
national assessment protocol comprising decision trees, tables and pre-calculations.
The shaded fields in the tables are part of the template and consequently not open for input.

Annex B
(informative)
B.1 Introduction
All tables in this Annex have the same lay-out as the corresponding tables in the template in Annex A.
But in this Annex B these are filled with a complete set of informative default choices, input data and
references.
NOTE 1 In future versions of this standard some of the informative default values and choices may become
normative.
NOTE 2 Using the default values will not guarantee consistency of data.
NOTE 3 In particular for the application within the context of EU Directives transposed into national legal
requirements, the values and choices can be imposed by national / regional regulations. If the values and default
choice of Annex B are not adopted because of the regulations, policies or national traditions, it is expected that:
— national or regional authorities prepare data sheets containing the choices, national or regional
input data and references, according to the template in Annex A. In this case the National Annex
(e.g. Annex NA, NB, ..) should provide a reference to these specifications;
— or, by default, the national standardization body will consider the possibility to prepare a National
Annex (e.g. Annex NA, NB, ..)complying with the template of Annex A, that provides choices,
national or regional input data and references specified in the legal documents.
NOTE 4 Where necessary for certain input values to be acquired by the user, a datasheet according to the
template of Annex A may contain a reference to national procedures for assessing the needed input data. For
instance to a national assessment protocol comprising decision trees, tables and pre-calculations.
NOTE 5 Drafting an application document according to the template in Annex A is open for different situations
e.g. design of new building, certification of new building, renovation of existing building and certification of
existing building and for different types of buildings e.g. small or simple buildings and large or complex buildings..
This can be done by developing different versions this application document. In such application document it is
possible to add information about, e.g. applicable national or regional regulations.
