8 Alignment Design
8.1 General
The basic aim of highway design is to identify technically sound, environment-friendly and economically feasible
highway alignment. The ensuing sections deals with obligatory points, which control highway alignment, design of
cross-section, highway geometry.
The main components included in the highway design are:
Ø Cross-sectional elements
Ø Embankment
Ø Horizontal alignment
Ø Vertical profile
Ø Junctions and/or Interchanges
Ø Road furniture
Ø Miscellaneous items
8.2 Horizontal alignment
{ Insert a table (example given below) on the physical features of the existing alignment and
possible geometric improvement required }

There is only one harvesting period in a year for which the post harvest traffic occurs only once a year. Which is normaly a
post harvest traffic period in a year .
It is informed by the local people that the lean traffic during non harvesting season will be about half of that in post harvest
traffic. Also it was known locally that the post harvest traffic period last for about 75 days in a year in which it takes about 20% of time to
built from lean to peak and then rremain at its peak for 20% of time and then recedes to lean traffic again in 20% of post harvest traffic
period.
The Traffic Survey yielded the following results for the Average Daily Traffic.
Car, Jeep, Van, Three Wheelers = 18
Motorised two Wheelers = 104
Pick up / Vans = 12
Trucks = 30 L UL OL
Agricultural tractors/ Trailers = 28 MCV 14 14 0
Buses = 0 HCV 14 16 0
Cycles = 127
Cycle Riksaw = 13
Animal Drawn Vehicles = 0
(Motorised and Non-Motorised/day) = 331
B). TRAFFIC (ESAL) CALCULATIONS:
Computation of the Design Traffic Parameter
Average daily traffic = 331
From the above T = Average daily traffic in lean season = 330
Post harvest traffic period factor
Durarion of peak period (t1) = 75 days t2 = 0 days
No of times traffic in peak period than in lean period n1 = 1 n2 = 0
(0.6 n1 x T x t1) +(0.6n2 x T x t2)
AADT = T + = 371
365
Before opening of road to traffic AADT after 1 year (cosidering construction period as 1 year) ,
assuming initial growth rate @6% AADT = 371
(1.06)2 417
From the above traffic count data, the proprtions of HCV and MCV out of the AADT work out as under

Un-Laden HCV (Truck & Bus) = 417 20

Un-Laden MCV (Mini Bus/ Tractor) = 417 18

Over Loaded MCV (Mini Bus / Tractoar) = 417 0

Taking VDF value as per para 3.4.4 of IRC-SP-72, the ESAL application per day
To= 18 2.86 20 0.31 0 0 18 0.34 18 0.02
0 = 0 64.16
Assuming a uniform traffic growth rate of 6% over 10 years cumulative ESAL applications(N)over the design life will be as
per the formula (as per IRC SP-72)
To x 365 x (1+0.01 r)n x L
N =
0.01 r
Where To = ESAL per day = number of commercial vehicles per day in year of opening X VDF, and L= lane distribution factor, L=1 for
single lane/ intermidiate lane
= To x 4811 x L = 308674
Hence it comes under traffic category T 6 of IRC, SP-72, 2015
C). SUBGRADE STRENGTH EVALUATION:
The properties of subgraded soil given by Asian Geatech Research Services is attached.
It was observed from the field and also local inquary that the ground water table at various points on proposed road during or just after
rainy season was about 1.8 mtr from normal ground surface.
Shallowest water table from road surface 1.80 1.00 2.80 mtr.
PI value = 21%
Maximum rain fall of the area (collected from block office) = 1535.00 mm
As water table will within 3m of road surface and the soil is clayey type (CI), with P.I. Value= 21% (i.e. between 0 to 20%)
4 days soaked C.B.R. is considered.
Soaked CBR (4days) of subgrade in %= 0.00 0.00 0.00
Hence design CBR = 3.0% to 4.0 %
D). PAVEMENT DESIGN:
Design ESAL = 308674 T6 Category as per IRC, SP-72-2015 )
Sub-grade strength = 3.0% to 4.0 %
Design Catalogues as (given in IRC-SP-72) pavement crust is provided as follows:
Pavement crust required = 325mm
Design crust to be provided = 325mm
75 mm WBM GradeIII
As annual rainfal is 1535.00 mm, 20mm thick P.M.C. with 6mm thick seal coat surfacing has been provided.
