BIG RAPIDS — For Mecosta
County’s aspiring fibbers,
exaggerators and embellishers,
the 2011 Festival of the Arts has an
outlet that could bring the winner
fame beyond their wildest dreams.
The idea behind the Tall Tale contest
was to have an outlet for people’s
writing, said event sponsor Brian
Pacholka. The contest is open to
everyone. Stories must be between
1,500 and 2,500 words and must
be the original, fictional work of the
author.
“There’s not a lot of outlets (in the
community) for people’s writing,” he
said.
The top six to 10 authors will be
invited to read their stories at
Pepper’s Cafe and Deli on Feb. 7.
“I like the idea of the tall tale,”
Pacholka said. “Just try to keep it
relatively short.”
Stories must include Mecosta
County in some way, Pacholka
said, whether it is set in Mecosta
County or it has a character who
is from Mecosta County or any tie
to the county. The contest features
a $250 cash prize for the “Best
Story Winner.” There also will be
a “People’s Choice Trophy” to the
story who gets the most votes from
the audience during the reading at
Peppers.
Deadline for submissions is 5 p.m.
on Jan. 22. Story submission may
be published in a book produced
by the Festival of the Arts board but
authors will retain all rights to their
work. The 2011 Festival of the Arts
begins on Jan. 27.
The idea came as a brainchild of
Leadership Mecosta, Pacholka
said. After he and fellow Leadership
student, Candy Allan, were talking
during the 2010 Festival of the Arts,
they came up with the idea to hold
a contest during the next year’s
event.
“Its just the idea that we do all sorts
of different arts but Festival of Arts
(didn’t) use the written word as an
art form,” Pacholka said. “It’s all
about the story.”
Stories will be judged by a five-
person panel made up of Pacholka,
Allan, Lynne Scheible, Cathy
Johnson and one more judge.
However, judges will only be looking
at the story as whole and will not be
nitpicking for English mistakes such
as grammar or spelling, Pacholka
said.
“All I want is the story,” he said.
Pacholka encourages people
to enter the contest. As a self-

proclaimed “failed” artist, he said the
point of art is not to make a timeless
piece to hang at the Louvre but to
have an outlet for creativity.
“I screw up more art than anybody I
know,” Pacholka said. “I don’t even
care. Its just doing the art that’s
important to me.”
In the end, art is a way to stretch
out the metaphorical muscles of the
soul, Pacholka said.
“I always say: You have the gym
to exercise the body,” he said. “You
have the library to exercise the
mind. You have the arts to exercise
the soul.”

(NAPSI)-For many manufacturers
and entrepreneurs, finding the
right location for their business
means more than square footage
and reasonable costs. It’s about
location—literally—because the
location is a natural fit for their

For Mark Coffman, president of

Some companies need to consider
whether their location is a natural
fit for the type of products they
produce. Surfboards designed in
China, for instance, wouldn’t have
the credibility among aficionados
that a label from Maui would have.
A number of outdoor-oriented
companies have located in the
northwestern state because of the
variety of its terrain and outdoor
culture. Everything from fly-fishing
poles to ski goggles are designed,
tested and manufactured there,
taking advantage of the natural
laboratory.
When does location matter? Outdoor
equipment manufacturers in Idaho
cite these advantages to matching
their product to their company’s
location:
• Credibility. The Scott Company,
makers of ski equipment, started in
Sun Valley, the legendary ski resort
known for its luxury, killer slopes and
its appeal to the rich and famous.
The company was launched in
1958 by Ed Scott, a ski racer and
engineer. While the company has
grown enormously with operations
around the world, it maintains its
headquarters in Sun Valley.
• Natural laboratory. SJX Jetboats
in Lewiston finds having the Snake
River right outside its office door a
benefit. The company can easily
test its equipment on a river that
offers both turbulent whitewater and
shallow drafts.
• Knowledgeable labor force. At

outdoor life, so they are familiar
with how the products will be used.
Employees will understand customer
needs on a personal level, so they
can be a more valuable resource to
the company.
• Lower costs. Business costs can
drop dramatically in a more rural
setting, depending on the needs of

BEWARE OF GLARE FOR
SAFETY
(NAPSI)-Good vision is an essential
part of driving safely, and more than
90 percent of decisions and reactions
made behind the wheel depend
on it. While many believe a bright,
sunny day is optimal for driving, the
reality is that blinding glare from
sun, snow and vehicles can be a
significant contributing factor to
fatal auto accidents. Additionally,

For blinding glare when driving,
simple solutions abound in the form
of polarized, prescription sunglasses.
In fact, a clinical study conducted by
Essilor as a precursor to the survey
found that driver reaction times
improve by one-third of a second for
drivers who wear polarized lenses.
For a car traveling 50 miles per
hour, one-third of a second allows a
driver to stop 23 feet sooner, or the
length of an intersection. In glare-

BUILDING
(NAPSI)-With water costs rising
across much of the United States—
more than 10 percent in two years,
according to a recent survey
by the American Water Works
Association—building a water-
efficient home is a wise investment
in the future.
The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency’s (EPA’s) WaterSense
program makes it easy to find
builders who can construct a new
home that saves water, energy and
money. More than 30 builders have
partnered with EPA to build more
water-efficient homes, and that
number is growing every day.
Just as it does for toilets, faucets,
showerheads and other plumbing
products, WaterSense offers a
label for water-efficient new homes,
designed to use at least 20 percent
less water than typical new homes,
both inside and out.
In fall 2010, builder KB Home
completed the first residences
certified to earn a label under the
WaterSense new homes program.
These homes, located near
Sacramento in Roseville, California,
will save 10,000 gallons of water
per year and more than $100 per
year on utility bills.
“Owning a WaterSense-labeled
house means you can enjoy all
the comforts of home while using
fewer natural resources and saving
money,” said Veronica Blette, chief
of EPA’s WaterSense branch. “A
family investing in a WaterSense-
labeled new home will save enough
water each year to wash more than
six months’ worth of laundry and
enough energy to power a television
for four years.”
Like many other forward-thinking
construction companies across
the country, since teaming up with
WaterSense earlier in 2010, KB
Home, the first national builder to
join WaterSense, has committed
to building new homes to EPA’s
WaterSense specification. Each
WaterSense-labeled new home
is independently inspected and
certified by a licensed certification
provider to ensure it meets EPA’s
water-efficiency and performance
criteria.

feature WaterSense-labeled
plumbing fixtures, a hot water
delivery system that gets hot water
to the tap faster, efficient appliances
(if included) and a water-efficient,
easy-to-maintain landscape.
The EPA estimates that if the
approximately 500,000 new homes

criteria, the homes would save
Americans 5 billion gallons of water
and more than $50 million in utility
bills annually.
