Bloomington Civic Theatre finally has a permanent home. It was founded in

1955 by a group of volunteers who believed a theater group would be a desir-
able addition to the culture for the new city of Bloomington. One of their
earliest dreams was to have a space for rehearsals, and set construction, and a
functional stage for performances. The City of Bloomington made that dream
a reality with the opening of Bloomington Center for the Arts in 2003. Before
then, Bloomington Civic Theatre performed on school and college stages when
available. Sets and costumes were built and sewn in homes, garages, empty
storefronts, and barns. The Bloomington Recreation Department advanced the
fledgling group $30 to begin their creative endeavor. It performed The Curious
Savage at the old Bloomington High School on 98th and Penn Avenue South
on June 24 and 25, 1955. For the first four years, it produced straight dramas
only, and in 1960, presented its first musical, Guys and Dolls which critics
labeled "a miracle in Bloomington". For more than 50 years, performers and
technicians have come from all over the metro area to audition and volunteer
for productions. Bloomington Civic Theatre currently produces four musicals a
season—providing an amazing venue for amateur performers, and entertaining,
high-quality, and reasonably priced shows for the theater-going public.

Light Rail - The Hiawatha Line and Northstar Commuter Rail

The Hiawatha Line
Light rail transit is the modern version of the street-
cars that operated in Minneapolis until the mid-1950s.
LRT is an important part of a transit system because
of its ability to transport high numbers of commuters
comfortably, efficiently, and quietly. LRT trains can op-
erate as single cars, or can be combined into two- and
three-car trains. LRT trains are clean and quiet because
they are electrically powered by overhead lines. Station
designs allow access by pedestrians, drop-off, reconfig-
ured bus connections, and park-and-ride.

The Hiawatha Light Rail Transit (LRT) route is the first

LRT line planned for the Twin Cities metropolitan
area. The 12-mile route runs along Hiawatha Avenue
and along 5th St. in Downtown Minneapolis. The line
includes 17 stations, and links Downtown Minneapolis,
the Airport, and the Mall of America. These locations
are three of the largest economic and job centers
in the region. There are a total of four stations in
Downtown Minneapolis and six stations in Minneapolis
neighborhoods. Visit <www.metrotransit.org/rail>.

Northstar Commuter Rail

After a dozen years of hard work, Northstar Commuter
Rail is the state's first commuter rail line operated by
Metro Transit. For the most current information, visit

The lake. The cliffs. The proximity. Just drive two-and-a-half hours, and
you're there! Be sure to visit the Lakewalk, Glensheen, Bellisio's, and the
Aquarium. Don't miss the Duluth-Superior GLBT Pride Festival held each
Labor Day weekend.

Ask anyone who's been here, and they'll tell you nothing's like a visit to
Duluth. Scenic wonder, natural beauty, and an all-around great place.

As Duluth has transformed itself into a tourism destination that draws

more than 3.5 million visitors annually, more GLBTs than ever are picking
the Twin Ports for their Midwestern getaway.
