ing an employee of the federal

of attempting to kill a federal
employee. More charges are
expected.
Discoveries at Loughner’s
home in southern Arizona,
where he lived with his parents
in a middle-class neighborhood
lined with desert landscaping
and palm trees, have provided
few answers to what motivated
him.

Court papers filed with the
charges said he had previous
contact with Giffords. The doc-
uments said he had received
a letter from the Democratic
lawmaker in which she thanked
him for attending a “Congress
on your Corner” event at a
mall in Tucson in 2007.
Investigators carrying out a
search warrant at his parents’
home in a middle-class neigh-
borhood found an envelope in a
safe with the words “I planned
ahead,” “My assassination”
and the name “Giffords” next
to what appears to be his sig-
nature.
Neighbors said Loughner
kept to himself and was often
seen walking his dog, almost
always wearing a hooded sweat
shirt and listening to his iPod.
Comments from friends and
former classmates bolstered by
Loughner’s own Internet post-
ings have painted a picture of
a social outcast with almost
indecipherable beliefs steeped
in mistrust and paranoia.
Two high school friends
said they had fallen out of
touch with Loughner and last
spoke to him around March,
when one of them was going
to set up some bottles in the
desert for target practice and
Loughner suggested he might
come along. It was unusual —
Loughner hadn’t expressed an
interest in guns before — and
his increasingly confrontation-
al behavior was pushing them
apart. He would send bizarre
text messages, but also break
off contact for weeks on end.
Around the same time,
Loughner’s behavior also
began to worry officials at
Pima Community College,
where Loughner began attend-
ing classes in 2005, the school
said in a release.
Between February and
September, Loughner “had five
contacts with PCC police for
classroom and library disrup-
tions,” the statement said. He
was suspended in September
after college police discovered
a YouTube video in which
Loughner claimed the college
was illegal according to the
U.S. Constitution.

remained low
in Allen County
for 2010
LIMA — While 2010 traf-
fic fatalities were up state
wide, in Allen County, the
Lima-Allen County Safe
Community Coalition reports
that fatal incidents remained
at record lows. Continuing
the trend since August, there
were no fatal crashes on Allen
County roadways during the
month of December.
During the calendar year
2010 through the end of
December, there were four
fatal crashes resulting in four
fatalities; this compares to 12
fatal crashes with fourteen 14
fatalities last year.
According to the National
Highway Traffic Safety
Administration, each traffic
fatality has a comprehensive
cost of $3,366,388. Therefore,
the economic cost attribut-
able to 2010 Allen County
traffic related fatalities equals
$13,465,552.

to shake and debris falling
from the ceiling.
All 20 Haitian girls at the
orphanage, the staff and mis-
sionaries, escaped without
serious injury. The center
was heavily damaged in the
quake.
On Saturday, Hursh, 47,
and nine other Cincinnati-area
residents left for Haiti where
they’ll help to construct a new
orphanage at the center, which
is administered by the Muncie,
Ind.-based Christian Service
International-CSI Ministries.
“We are not going to let an
earthquake get in the way of
our mission,” Hursh said in an
interview Friday.
Hursh and six fellow
teammates from the United
Methodist Church were in
Haiti during the earthquake.
This is Hursh’s fourth year as
part of a CSI-associated team.
“I know it will be a little
emotional at first, but I think
we will soon get back to the
swing of things,” Hursh said.
“We’ve always fought against
barriers in Haiti, and the earth-
quake is just another barrier.”

not just people who get sick
from stress.
A recent Ohio State
University study found that
healthy cats show signs of ill-
ness when stressed.
At the same time, cats diag-
nosed with feline interstitial
cystitis (FIC) became health-
ier when stress levels were
reduced, the study showed.
Twelve of 32 cats in the
3-year study were healthy and
20 had FIC, a chronic pain
syndrome that affects the cat’s
bladder.
Lower urinary tract diseas-
es occur in about 1.5 percent
of house cats, the researchers
said, and a lot of pet owners
can’t stand the messes that
come with it, so millions of
sick cats are euthanized or
turned over to shelters every
year.
The owners of the sick cats
at OSU had all decided to
have their pets euthanized, but
agreed to let them take part in
the study first.

Consumer spending is
critical because it powers
about 70 percent of the econ-
omy. It rose for five straight
months through November,
kicking off the strongest holi-
day shopping season since
2006. Many shoppers are
showing enough confidence
to splurge on new cars: Auto
sales rebounded 11 percent in
2010, the first increase since
2005.
Economists say consum-
ers seem increasingly divided
into “haves” and “have-nots.”
The haves are more secure in
their jobs. Their finances are
solid. So is their credit.
The have-nots are strug-
gling with shaky finances and

my voice to the chorus of those
who, in the name of all that is
hallowed, object to the altera-
tion of literature for the benefit
of illiterates. The fellow who
edited the new Twain edition,
Alan Gribben, isn’t illiterate,
of course, and therefore has
no excuse. He’s a professor of
English at Auburn University.
But he aims to increase the
likelihood that non-readers
will read more Twain if the
author isn’t so offensive.
No one would find this
more offensive than Twain,
who was, not least, reliably
pithy about the small-minded
and overly sensitive. No one
would argue that the word
in question isn’t emotionally
charged and, in certain con-
texts, highly offensive. The
issue here isn’t whether the
word is good or bad (I person-
ally despise it), but whether
one should rewrite another’s
literary work.
The simple answer is, no.
As even Gribben concedes,
in Twain’s remarkable work,

Workers who survived the
job cuts of the past three years
have begun to conclude: “If
they haven’t fired me by now,
they’re not going to,” says

his use of the word was both
common to the times and
an indictment of slavery. If
readers can’t understand this,
then perhaps a teacher might
enlighten them. The purpose
of reading isn’t just to run
words past a pupil’s pupils,
but to enhance understanding
and reveal truth through what
we call “teaching.”
That some teachers and
librarians find Twain offen-
sive is regrettable. But let’s be
clear: These facts are an indict-
ment of teachers and librarians
who should find another line
of work, not that Twain needs
fixin’.
At what point, besides, do
we stop with the red pen-
cil? When will we have sani-
tized the library such that no
one’s feelings are hurt? Who
gets to decide? These are not
new questions, but they bear
repeating as we seem to know
less and less.
Excising the particular word
in question would keep busy-
bodies occupied for the fore-
seeable future. Other offending
writers include such luminaries
as William Faulkner, Flannery
O’Connor, Robert Penn Warren
and Herman Melville, among
countless others. Were these
writers racist? We cannot read
minds, but it seems to me that
racism and the sort of worldly
intelligence that inspires men

The House’s newly
installed Republican lead-
ers postponed Wednesday’s
scheduled vote to repeal the
new health care law. That
divisive issue was at the cen-
ter of the harshest criticisms
of Giffords and many other
Democrats for the past two
years.
The chief law enforcement
official in the House, Sergeant-
at-Arms Bill Livingood, said
the Tucson attack did not
appear to be part of a larger
threat against Congress. Still,
as a precaution, he advised
each House member’s office
in an e-mail Saturday evening
to get in touch with local law
enforcement.
Washington and the nation
have experienced a year or
more of raw politics, with
anger spilling over on both
sides and gun-related meta-
phors coming loosely from
the lips of some candidates
and activists. Giffords, who
had been a figurative target of
the right, warned months ago
that the verbal assaults were
beyond the pale and could
have dire results.
In Pima County, Ariz.,
Sheriff Clarence Dupnik
suggested “all this vitriol”
in recent discourse might
be connected to Saturday’s
shootings. “This may be free
speech,” he told reporters,
“but it’s not without conse-
quences.”
By October 2010, layoffs
and other dismissals had sunk
to their lowest point since
August 2006. In December,
employers added just 103,000
jobs — too few even to keep
up with population growth.
But that was mainly because
they’re still reluctant to hire,
not because they’re still cut-
ting jobs.
The number of people
applying for unemployment
benefits — a proxy for the
pace of layoffs — has dropped
in the past four months. And
economists think employers
will finally ramp up hiring
this year.
“You’ve got 10 percent
unemployment, and you add
another 5 or 10 percent” for
discouraged workers or those
stuck in part-time positions,
because they can’t find full-
time work, says Doug Hart, a
retail specialist at the consult-
ing firm BDO USA. But the
remaining 80 percent, having
survived the worst of the lay-
offs, ”are feeling more secure
about their jobs.“
In 2009, consumers across
all income groups froze up.
The Labor Department’s
Bureau of Labor Statistics
recorded the first annual
drop in consumer spending in
records dating to 1984.
Now, BDO’s Hart says,
“The fear factor has subsid-
ed.”

ible. Relatedly, the inexhaust-
ibly quotable Twain wrote:
“Broad, wholesome, chari-
table views of men and things
cannot be acquired by vegetat-
ing in one little corner of the
earth all one’s lifetime.”
More to the point, these
writers selected each word
painstakingly to create a world
they envisioned as necessary to
their purpose. That the world
has changed, and our language
with it, is no argument for
rewriting or reconstructing the
original creator’s intent. To do
so is both an assault on intel-
lectual property that should be
sacrosanct, and an insult to the
intelligence of those whose
minds we attempt to mold.
A teacher above all others
should be ashamed.
Is the N-word problematic
in a nation forever shackled
to a racist, slave-owning past?
Absolutely. But removing it
from books won’t eradicate it
from history, nor alter the pain
it provokes. Should we talk
about the harm it did and still
does? Certainly.
But selectively editing lit-
erature, like history, is denial
by any other name. When it
comes to denial and truth, as
everyone knows, never the
Twain shall meet.

OTTOVILLE — The
Ottoville Big Green boys
basketball team always plays
very hard and for the full 32
minutes of the game.
However, Saturday night
at Ottoville High School, the
Big Green’s hustle and deter-
mination wasn’t enough as
they had a very hard time
shooting the basketball and
putting points on the board as
the Minster Wildcats defeat-
ed the home team by a score
of 53-39.
Minster jumped out to
a 19-11 lead after the first
quarter of play and looked
to start setting the tempo of
the game. However, a well-
played second quarter for the
Big Green kept them in the
game as they only trailed by
nine points — 33-24 — head-
ing into intermission.
Minster shot 13-for-24 in
the first half (54%), while
the Big Green only knocked
down 6-for-25 for only 24
