Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.

1. a. Explain critically about the different types of water carriage 7

systems exist in Nepal.
b. Determine the velocity of flow and discharge in a sewer of 8
diameter 60cm. The sewer is laid at a gradient of 1 in 250 and
running half full during peak flow condition Manning's roughness
efficient is 0.012.
2. a. Describe calcium and sulphur cycles of decomposition with their 7
reliable diagram.
b. 5- days BOD is 300mg/lit and rate of reaction constant with base is 8
0.23/day. Calculate ultimate BOD. What proportion of BOD will
remain unoxidized after 20 days?
3. a. What do you understand about the self purification of streams? 7
What are the major factors that affects the self purification of a
stream
b. Design a circular sewage sedimentation tank for a town having 8
population 50000. The average water demand is 120 lpcd. Assume
75% water reaches at treatment plant and peak factor provided in
2.7.
4. a. Explain different method involved for the sewage treatment. 8
b. Design the activated sludge unit treatment with the following data: 7
i. Population of town = 50000.
ii. Average sewage flow = 180 liter/day
iii. BOD of raw sewage = 180mg/ltr.

iv. Suspended solids in raw sewage = 275mg/ltr
v. Overall BOD remiral desired = 85%
5. a. What is the mechanism and methods of aeration? Provide 7
necessary figures if possible.
b. Explain critically about the ventilation improved pit latrine. 8
